Hunan Lanshan- Express delivery -takes- the bus and it is no longer difficult for farmers to pick up parcels

On October 9th, during an interview in Yongzhou, we had the opportunity to speak with Guo Canwen, a bus driver for the Urban and Rural Passenger Transport Company in Lanshan County, Hunan Province. Every morning at 9 AM, Guo checks the express packages scheduled for delivery before heading out into the countryside.

Since March of this year, Guo has been transporting a distinctive group of “passengers”—express packages destined for local villagers. This effort marks an important step in Lanshan County’s initiative to blend passenger transport with logistics. The county has developed a strategic plan aimed at tackling the logistical challenges of the “last mile” in rural areas.

At the package delivery service station in Shangdong Village, nestled in Jiangdong Yao Autonomous Township, the shelves are stacked with an array of express packages. Zhang Liying, the station manager, explained, “Thanks to the integration of rural passenger and freight services, express deliveries can now go directly to the village via bus. We handle over 40 packages daily, and sometimes that number reaches up to 100.”

Villager Zhong Fucai highlighted the advantages of this new service, saying, “In the past, we had to travel to the county seat to pick up our packages. Now, smaller items travel on passenger buses, while larger packages arrive via dedicated freight vehicles straight to our village. It’s much more convenient.”

The fusion of cargo and postal services not only streamlines the delivery process for residents but also provides an economic boost for local businesses. Li Qingxiang, a shop owner in Taqi Village, expressed her appreciation, stating, “On average, we receive more than 40 packages each day. Managing a business alongside deliveries makes life easier for the villagers and enhances our income.”

Lanshan County has invested over 1 million yuan in a command and dispatch center dedicated to rural passenger and freight services. This facility allows for real-time monitoring of vehicle schedules, locations, routes, and even driver contact details, ensuring effective management of deliveries.

A representative from the Lanshan County Transportation Bureau remarked, “This integration has significantly enhanced logistics coverage in rural areas.” Utilizing a system of scheduled routes, the county has launched 10 integrated passenger and freight lines across 14 townships, establishing 189 service stations that collectively manage an average of 15,000 packages daily.

Looking towards the future, Lanshan plans to further advance the “Four Good Rural Roads” initiative to ensure optimal road conditions that facilitate the integration of passenger and freight services, with the goal of reaching more villages and benefiting an even larger number of residents.

Ningxia’s A-level scenic spots received 4.0811 million tourists during the National Day holiday

On October 8, a reporter from China News Service spoke with officials from the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region’s Department of Culture and Tourism about the remarkable tourism statistics during the 2024 National Day holiday. The region’s A-grade scenic spots attracted around 4.08 million visitors, generating approximately 211 million yuan in tourism revenue. This marks an impressive year-on-year increase of 30.39% in visitor numbers and 31.68% in spending.

During the “Eleventh” holiday, the Ningxia Department of Culture and Tourism partnered with cultural and tourism departments across five cities to leverage the strengths of regional and local businesses. Their strategy included horizontal cooperation, vertical connectivity, joint promotions, and real-time scheduling. They launched the 2024 “Celebrate National Day and Enjoy Ningxia” initiative, featuring 134 themed cultural and tourism events. To further entice visitors, the department distributed 100,000 free tickets to scenic areas and offered a 50% discount on the “Ningxia Tourism Card,” limited to 50,000 cards. Additionally, 31 scenic spots in Ningxia provided reduced or free admission for first-time college students, effectively combining consumer-friendly policies with holiday festivities to stimulate the local economy.

To elevate personalized, diverse, and high-quality travel experiences for tourists, Ningxia introduced a range of new cultural and tourism projects aimed at transforming each site into a space for sharing beautiful life experiences. The Yinchuan Flower Expo Park unveiled the “Mountain and Sea Night” immersive night tour, which features a 3.9-kilometer walking avenue along with engaging activities such as illuminated penguin exhibits and a chrysanthemum exhibition in honor of National Day. The immersive performance town “See Helan” offers visitors an exciting four-hour night entertainment experience, while the Phoenix Fantasy Town in Yinchuan Cultural City captivates with a diverse lineup of performances and unique culinary offerings.

Just prior to National Day, three rural tourism routes from Ningxia were selected by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as part of its collection of 85 “Tasty Country Life” boutique rural tourism routes, offering visitors more exciting travel options during the holiday. Tourists are invited to indulge in local culinary delights and explore traditional cooking techniques, immersing themselves in the vibrant rural festivals of Ningxia. In Helan County’s Diao Yu Space, activities like corn rolling competitions, a miniature train ride through rice fields, and family-friendly fishing have drawn many visitors, providing a nostalgic and interactive experience that evokes a sense of home.

NEMSA, Ondo Collaborate on Standardisation of Electrical Equipment

In a significant move to enhance the safety and reliability of electrical services in Ondo State, the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) and the Ondo State government have announced plans to collaborate on the technical standardization, inspection, and testing of all electrical equipment and materials throughout the state.

This commitment was revealed during a recent virtual meeting that brought together key officials from both NEMSA and the Ondo State government. In a press release, Ama Umoren, NEMSA’s Head of Communications & Protocol, shared insights from the meeting.

Founded under the NEMSA Act of 2015, now recognized as the Electricity Act of 2023, NEMSA is responsible for enforcing technical standards and regulations, as well as conducting inspections, testing, and certifying various electrical installations, meters, and instruments. The agency’s mission is to ensure the efficient production and delivery of safe, reliable, and sustainable electricity, ultimately safeguarding lives and properties within Nigeria’s Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) and related sectors.

The virtual gathering, initiated by NEMSA, was led by Tukur Tahir, the Managing Director/Chief Executive of NEMSA, who also holds the position of Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation (CEIF). Notable members of NEMSA’s management, alongside a delegation from the Ondo State government headed by Light Olatunji, the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Energy, took part in the discussions.

During the meeting, Tahir warmly welcomed the Ondo State representatives, recognizing this as a significant step towards fostering cooperation between the federal agency and the state government. He stressed the importance of achieving standardization to ensure the safety of lives and property in the electrical sector.

In his opening remarks, Olatunji expressed the gratitude of Ondo State Governor Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa for the invitation to the meeting. He voiced confidence that this partnership would bolster collaborative efforts in protecting lives and property across the state. Olatunji also noted that the Ondo State government is already engaging with other federal agencies on similar initiatives and is set to launch several projects that will necessitate collaboration with NEMSA.

San Quentin guard arrested for using peanut butter jars to smuggle drugs into prison to sell to inmates

In August, the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, previously known as San Quentin State Prison, drew significant attention due to a troubling incident involving one of its guards. Keith Randle, a 55-year-old officer, was arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into the facility for the purpose of selling them to inmates.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Randle had served at California’s oldest prison for over a decade, seemingly leading an unremarkable life. The situation escalated on the morning of August 15, shortly after Randle began his shift at 8 a.m. He was informed that law enforcement officials were searching his vehicle.

During the search, authorities reportedly discovered a peanut butter jar in Randle’s backpack. However, this was no ordinary jar; it contained roughly 300 grams of methamphetamine and a small quantity of cannabis oil. Further investigation uncovered that police seized $3,350 in cash alongside the drugs.

When confronted by investigators, Randle distanced himself from the jar, claiming it didn’t belong to him. He explained that he had inadvertently taken a co-worker’s peanut butter jar and sandwich from the fridge the previous day and planned to return the jar that morning, entirely unaware of what was inside.

Prosecutors expressed doubts about Randle’s story, particularly after uncovering an astonishing amount of money—over $75,000—that had been transferred to him by inmates and their families. One striking transaction involved an inmate’s wife, who sent Randle nearly $40,000 over the course of a year, while simultaneously receiving about $93,000 in transfers from her husband and others incarcerated at the facility.

Randle was hired by the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center in 2012, earning a reported total compensation of around $80,000 last year. Prosecutors noted that the suspicious money transfers had begun in 2019.

Randle was arrested in late September and remained in custody until his initial court appearance on October 1. Following the hearing, the judge granted him bail while he awaits trial. If convicted, Randle could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million. His next court date is set for October 15.

Mets Surprise Tour Advances to Division Series Thanks to Milkshake Brother and 1 Pumpkin

In an exclusive interview after the game, Pete Alonso shared his excitement about the New York Mets’ journey into the division series, attributing their success to a series of good luck charms. After delivering a crucial three-run homer that clinched the wild card series victory, Alonso couldn’t wait to reveal the team’s latest lucky artifact: the “Playoff Pumpkin.”

Reflecting on the Mets’ remarkable turnaround this season, Alonso noted the pivotal moment when the team relied on Grimace, the giant purple McDonald’s mascot, as they struggled early in the season. Following Grimace’s ceremonial first pitch on June 12, the Mets enjoyed a seven-game winning streak and a record of 12 wins out of their next 16 games. To honor Grimace’s good fortune, Alonso even customized a pair of purple cleats to match the mascot and the Mets painted seat 12 in section 302 at Citi Field in Grimace’s colors, dubbing it the “Grimace seat.”

Alonso also highlighted the contributions of Jos茅 Iglesias, a 34-year-old infielder and a popular Latin singer known by the stage name “Candelita.” Iglesias鈥?single “OMG,” which was released in June coinciding with the Mets’ rise, became an anthem within the ballpark during this triumphant time, even climbing the Billboard Latin Digital Song chart in July.

During the post-game celebration after their wildcard win, Alonso was excited to present his new lucky charm, a pumpkin he personally picked. “This is a pumpkin I harvested myself,” he said with a grin. He explained that he and his wife picked it during a trip to a pumpkin farm in Wisconsin while visiting the Brewers. They’ve affectionately named it the “Playoff Pumpkin.”

From one-way support to two-way travel, the -rushers- in Beijing-Mongolia cooperation

“We’re really looking forward to the introduction of monthly passes for the high-speed train between Beijing and Hohhot,” said Zhang Xiaotian with a smile, reflecting on his experiences after spending over a year working in Inner Mongolia.

I recently accompanied a reporting team on a mission called “Celebrating National Day: Discussing Collaboration and Showcasing Accomplishments” in Inner Mongolia. At the Inner Mongolia Hospital of Peking University Cancer Hospital, Executive Director Zhang Xiaotian shared his insights on the contributions of Beijing doctors to the collaboration between Beijing and Inner Mongolia.

In 1996, the central government initiated significant cooperation aimed at poverty alleviation between eastern and western regions, establishing a supportive partnership between Beijing and Inner Mongolia. Over the past 28 years, many individuals like Zhang Xiaotian have taken on roles as “builders” and “travelers,” fostering resource-sharing development and pursuing a journey toward shared prosperity.

“Efforts in healthcare are addressing the needs of the community,” Zhang noted as I entered the spacious and orderly lobby of the hospital. Patients at the consultation desk could see a display highlighting the qualifications of the experts from Beijing.

Pointing to a sign for the “Abdominal Surgery A Zone,” Zhang mentioned, “Director Ji frequently travels back and forth between Beijing and Inner Mongolia to care for our patients.” Ji Jiafu, head of the General Surgery Department and director of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Center at Peking University Cancer Hospital, is also a member of the Central Committee of the Democratic League.

Since the establishment of the Inner Mongolia branch of Peking University Cancer Hospital in February last year, Ji has been making even more frequent visits to Inner Mongolia. In July, he led a team of doctors to provide free medical consultations and cancer screenings in the Abaga Banner of Xilin Gol League.

The collaboration between Beijing and Inner Mongolia has garnered support from many members of the united front. “Our hospital is home to over 20 members from various democratic parties who have greatly facilitated medical collaboration, providing practical support for local patients,” Zhang shared.

“We heard that experts from Beijing were coming, so we came right over. It took just seven days from admission to surgery,” said Wen Ruifang, a family member of a patient, reflecting on their experience at the Inner Mongolia branch of Peking University Cancer Hospital.

Wen recalled, “My father had to go to Beijing for treatment last year, which took a month and was very inconvenient for the family. Now my husband can see an expert right at our doorstep and receive professional treatment, saving us a lot of trouble.”

According to Zhang, the Inner Mongolia branch of Peking University Cancer Hospital has significantly eased the local medical service pressure in 2023, with outpatient visits rising by 63.4%, inpatient discharges by 60.67%, and surgical procedures increasing by 99.63% compared to before the collaboration began in 2022.

“To elevate medical standards, we can’t solely rely on doctors from Beijing; we also need to cultivate local talent,” shared Dr. Zhang Yi, chief physician at Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University, following a surgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Baotou Medical College.

Dr. Zhang’s team has set up a workspace at the Second Affiliated Hospital, enhancing local thoracic surgery standards. This year alone, the Baotou Diagnosis and Treatment Center of the Thoracic Surgery Department has performed over 90 surgeries, marking a significant increase.

“I’m currently supervising graduate students at Baotou Medical College,” Dr. Zhang said. He hopes that through research and education, he can train more medical professionals and strengthen the local workforce.

“Mutual progress through collaboration” is essential. “Once our products gain a foothold in Beijing, distributors from all over the country will come to us,” reflected Wang Wei, marketing director of Langgege Dairy Co., Ltd., based in Ulanqab City, known as the “Capital of Yogurt.” Wang frequently travels between Beijing and Inner Mongolia to expand his company’s market reach.

“Just a step west from Beijing lands you in Ulanqab,” he explained, noting that high-speed rail allows travelers to reach Ulanqab in under two hours. Capitalizing on its proximity to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei market, Langgege Dairy often chooses Beijing as the first location to promote new products. They have also partnered with China Agricultural University to deepen their research on yogurt cultures.

“Yogurt cultures are the ‘chip’ of yogurt, and many companies source theirs from abroad,” Wang explained. The initiative to develop their own strains aims to ensure independent ownership of intellectual property. Thanks to collaborations with research institutions in Beijing, they have successfully developed 26 strains that capture the distinctive qualities of grassland yogurt.

In Ulanqab, the benefits of these collaborative efforts extend beyond dairy to agriculture. Through investment from Beijing enterprise Hongfu Group, a modern agricultural industrial park has been established, featuring advanced smart greenhouses with precise irrigation systems for tomato cultivation.

“Our produce is harvested and can reach Beijing within four to six hours,” said Li Bin, operational director of the industrial park. Ulanqab cherry tomatoes are increasingly making their mark in supermarkets and agricultural markets across Beijing.

Established in 2021 with support from local government and collaboration funds, the Hongfu Industrial Park has created over 400 jobs, with nearly a quarter of its tomatoes shipped to the Beijing market.

Over the past 28 years, the cooperation between Beijing and Inner Mongolia has evolved from one-way support to a mutually beneficial exchange, broadening resource-sharing channels.

In 2022, a collaboration framework agreement was signed, and mechanisms for united front cooperation have continued to improve, resulting in the completion of 22 collaboration projects last year and another 22 confirmed for this year. Resources from the united front are increasingly being mobilized for collaborative efforts, paving the way for development and addressing the needs of the community.

EU opens -air corridor- to provide humanitarian aid to Lebanon_1

On October 9, the European Union unveiled an initiative to establish an “air corridor” aimed at streamlining the delivery of humanitarian aid to Lebanon.

In a statement from the European Commission, it was noted that the air corridor will commence with three flights originating from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Brindisi in Italy. These flights are tasked with transporting vital supplies, including hygiene products, blankets, and emergency shelter materials, directly to Beirut, Lebanon’s capital. The first flight is expected to touch down in Beirut on October 11.

Beyond the creation of this air corridor, the European Commission is mobilizing member states to assist Lebanon by covering transportation costs. Countries such as France, Belgium, Spain, Poland, and Slovakia have already dispatched medical supplies and relief materials since last week, with additional support from Greece also on the way.

This announcement underscores the EU’s dedication to leveraging all available emergency resources to aid the Lebanese population affected by the ongoing conflict. The EU’s emergency response coordination center will work closely with member states and humanitarian partners to amplify their aid efforts in Lebanon.

The situation in Lebanon has worsened significantly since a telecommunications explosion on September 17, which heightened tensions between Israel and Lebanon. Consequently, the humanitarian crisis has escalated, resulting in unprecedented displacement levels. Millions of Lebanese citizens and Syrian refugees are now grappling with severe food shortages, a condition that continues to deteriorate.

In response to these pressing needs, the EU allocated an additional €10 million in humanitarian assistance to Lebanon on September 29, followed by another €30 million on October 3. These recent emergency assistance packages have brought the total aid provided by the EU to Lebanon this year to €104 million.

Looking at -C-Culture- from Internet hot words to go global (culture only)

Recently, Tencent Video’s drama “The Story of Roses” has taken South Korea by storm, sparking a viewing frenzy across popular video platforms. At the same time, Youku’s historical series “Mo Yu Yun Jian” has soared to the top of viewing rankings in both Thailand and South Korea. Internationally, the term “cdrama” (short for Chinese drama) has exploded on social media, accumulating millions of posts and transforming “C-Drama” into a trending phrase.

Hashtags play a crucial role in content management and algorithm recommendations on social media, effectively reflecting user preferences. In recent years, tags like “cdrama” and “donghua” (Chinese animation) have gained significant traction on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. Under these tags, millions of short videos have accumulated billions of views and likes, establishing web series, animation, and online literature as vibrant aspects of China’s digital cultural identity and promoting “C-Culture” worldwide.

Currently, popular Chinese dramas like “Qing Yu Nian” (Season 2), “The Story of Roses,” “Mo Yu Yun Jian,” and “With the Phoenix” have each garnered over one hundred million, and in some instances, one billion views across various social platforms. Many of these dramas boast ratings above 8 on international review sites, indicating their favorable reception. In terms of activity levels, “cdrama” ranks second on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, just behind “kdrama” (Korean drama), while significantly outpacing “jdrama” (Japanese drama) and “thaidrama” (Thai drama).

The rising popularity of Chinese dramas abroad has directly fueled the buzz around “cdrama.” Furthermore, Chinese web literature and animations, celebrated for their imaginative storytelling and nuanced emotional depth, dominate categories like “webnovel” and “webtoon,” leading to the rise of trending terms such as “donghua,” “manhua,” “xianxia,” and “wuxia.”

An analysis of these popular terms reveals a unique approach that China has taken in accessing international markets. Often referred to as China’s fifth great invention, online literature is captivating audiences worldwide. Adaptations into animation and web dramas maintain a distinctly Chinese essence. Early trending terms like “wuxia” and “xianxia” are often tied to China’s ancient folklore and martial arts narratives, interweaving elements of Daoist culture with rich fantasy themes of love, loyalty, and friendship. The visual aesthetics of these animations showcase stunning Chinese landscapes, traditional ink wash techniques, and culturally significant attire.

Despite the dense concentration of “Chinese cultural content” potentially posing comprehension challenges, dedicated international fans are undeterred. They actively engage with their favorite works through animation clips and discussions about themes and backgrounds. For example, the recent release of the Chinese 3D animation “God Slayer: The Ordinary Realm” swiftly generated numerous TikTok videos, amassing nearly 100,000 likes just two days post-launch. The comments section buzzed with discussions in languages like English, Thai, Indonesian, and Russian, as users debated the translation of the animation’s title. This dynamic social platform plays a vital role in bridging cultural divides.

In successfully entering foreign markets, collaboration proves more effective than isolation. Chinese digital cultural enterprises like Tencent are leading the way with their “Web Literature + Animation + Series” model, consistently producing new content from a single successful category. This strategy aids in establishing a robust brand presence and recognition in unfamiliar markets. As international fans become accustomed to encountering the same intellectual property across formats—novel, animation, and series—they increasingly seek out additional Chinese cultural works. Phrases such as, “I really hope this novel I love gets adapted into a drama,” and “Where can I find the novel for this C-Drama?” are becoming more prevalent in online conversations.

Whether it’s “cdrama” or “donghua,” this cultural exchange is generating increased interest among young audiences in Chinese culture and society. The vibrant ancient clothing styles depicted in web dramas have made “hanfu” a popular term on social media platforms outside of China. Additionally, the rise of Chinese campus dramas is captivating international audiences, showcasing the unique appeal of “Chinese school uniforms,” typically consisting of loose t-shirts and athletic wear. The synergy between web dramas, literature, and animation is illuminating “C-Culture” on a global scale.
