In a significant move to enhance the safety and reliability of electrical services in Ondo State, the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) and the Ondo State government have announced plans to collaborate on the technical standardization, inspection, and testing of all electrical equipment and materials throughout the state.
This commitment was revealed during a recent virtual meeting that brought together key officials from both NEMSA and the Ondo State government. In a press release, Ama Umoren, NEMSA’s Head of Communications & Protocol, shared insights from the meeting.
Founded under the NEMSA Act of 2015, now recognized as the Electricity Act of 2023, NEMSA is responsible for enforcing technical standards and regulations, as well as conducting inspections, testing, and certifying various electrical installations, meters, and instruments. The agency’s mission is to ensure the efficient production and delivery of safe, reliable, and sustainable electricity, ultimately safeguarding lives and properties within Nigeria’s Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) and related sectors.
The virtual gathering, initiated by NEMSA, was led by Tukur Tahir, the Managing Director/Chief Executive of NEMSA, who also holds the position of Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation (CEIF). Notable members of NEMSA’s management, alongside a delegation from the Ondo State government headed by Light Olatunji, the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Energy, took part in the discussions.
During the meeting, Tahir warmly welcomed the Ondo State representatives, recognizing this as a significant step towards fostering cooperation between the federal agency and the state government. He stressed the importance of achieving standardization to ensure the safety of lives and property in the electrical sector.
In his opening remarks, Olatunji expressed the gratitude of Ondo State Governor Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa for the invitation to the meeting. He voiced confidence that this partnership would bolster collaborative efforts in protecting lives and property across the state. Olatunji also noted that the Ondo State government is already engaging with other federal agencies on similar initiatives and is set to launch several projects that will necessitate collaboration with NEMSA.
