In an exclusive interview after the game, Pete Alonso shared his excitement about the New York Mets’ journey into the division series, attributing their success to a series of good luck charms. After delivering a crucial three-run homer that clinched the wild card series victory, Alonso couldn’t wait to reveal the team’s latest lucky artifact: the “Playoff Pumpkin.”
Reflecting on the Mets’ remarkable turnaround this season, Alonso noted the pivotal moment when the team relied on Grimace, the giant purple McDonald’s mascot, as they struggled early in the season. Following Grimace’s ceremonial first pitch on June 12, the Mets enjoyed a seven-game winning streak and a record of 12 wins out of their next 16 games. To honor Grimace’s good fortune, Alonso even customized a pair of purple cleats to match the mascot and the Mets painted seat 12 in section 302 at Citi Field in Grimace’s colors, dubbing it the “Grimace seat.”
Alonso also highlighted the contributions of Jos茅 Iglesias, a 34-year-old infielder and a popular Latin singer known by the stage name “Candelita.” Iglesias鈥?single “OMG,” which was released in June coinciding with the Mets’ rise, became an anthem within the ballpark during this triumphant time, even climbing the Billboard Latin Digital Song chart in July.
During the post-game celebration after their wildcard win, Alonso was excited to present his new lucky charm, a pumpkin he personally picked. “This is a pumpkin I harvested myself,” he said with a grin. He explained that he and his wife picked it during a trip to a pumpkin farm in Wisconsin while visiting the Brewers. They’ve affectionately named it the “Playoff Pumpkin.”
