Comment- Why is cross-strait tourism exchange and cooperation important-

On September 27, the long-awaited travel from residents of Fujian Province to Kinmen officially resumed. With the October holiday just around the corner, Kinmen is set to receive a wave of mainland tourists, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy.

The main goal of fostering relations between the mainland and Taiwan is to enhance the well-being of both sides. The resumption of travel for Fujian residents to Kinmen, following the reopening to Matsu, serves as a goodwill initiative aimed at normalizing tourism across the strait.

What makes cross-strait tourism so crucial? For starters, it significantly impacts tourism operators and related sectors such as transportation, accommodations, dining, and insurance. Research indicates that around 90% of nearly 4,000 tourism businesses in Taiwan engage in activities linked to the mainland. Historically, these businesses have reaped economic benefits from mainland visitors. However, in recent years, tourism in places like Kinmen has faced severe challenges due to strained cross-strait relations and the COVID-19 pandemic. This has left related industries eager for the return of mainland tourists to kickstart recovery and stimulate economic growth.

Moreover, cross-strait tourism exchange promotes economic and cultural collaboration, fostering deeper integration across various sectors. Tourism and culture are deeply intertwined; shared cultural heritage between both sides can strengthen bonds. Kinmen, for example, can capitalize on its geographical proximity to collaboratively develop a “Kinmen-Xiamen Living Circle,” generating additional advantages for residents on both sides. Additionally, both regions can learn from one another to enhance the quality of tourism, aiming to offer superior experiences to visitors and foster high-quality growth in the tourism market.

Furthermore, cross-strait tourism exchange plays a vital role in maintaining friendships between the people on both sides, contributing to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Face-to-face interactions allow individuals to connect on a more personal level, building trust and understanding. This mutual comprehension is essential for nurturing goodwill and preserving peace between the two sides.

Regarding the influx of mainland tourists to Kinmen, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, mentioned on September 25 that more mainland visitors are anticipated in Kinmen. She expressed hope that they would enjoy a positive travel experience and urged the Taiwan authorities to focus on the well-being of people on both sides to facilitate smooth tourism exchanges.

On the other hand, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration has not yet lifted restrictions on group travel for Taiwanese citizens to the mainland, continuing to perpetuate ideological narratives that provoke anti-mainland sentiments among its citizens. Such measures only serve to heighten tensions between the two sides.

Maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait is a hard-won achievement that deserves careful consideration. The mainland is genuinely committed to reinstating cross-strait exchanges and hopes the DPP will embrace the prevailing Taiwanese sentiment that favors peace, development, exchange, and cooperation. This alignment could greatly benefit Taiwan’s tourism industry and deepen understanding, contributing to the ongoing maintenance of peace and stability across the Strait.

Breast Cancer- Raising Awareness, Inspiring Hope

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which takes place globally every October, the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) recently organized a seminar centered around this year’s theme: “No one should face breast cancer alone.” Esther Olukuwrites reports that the event aimed to educate women on breast health, the early signs of breast cancer, and the empowering message that a diagnosis should not be viewed as a death sentence, but rather as a treatable condition.

During the seminar, we explored a pressing question: At what age do girls start noticing changes in their bodies? For many, the journey into womanhood begins as early as nine years old, as they experience the initial signs of puberty through breast development. Yet, as they mature, societal focus often shifts to the aesthetics of breasts, leading to a significant lack of discourse around the critical topic of breast health, particularly regarding breast cancer. This gap in public dialogue underscores the urgent need for awareness and education in Africa, as these issues are intricately tied to identity, self-esteem, and emotional well-being.

Dr. Habeebu Muhammad, the Chief Clinical Coordinator of the NSIA LUTH Cancer Center and Head of the Radiology Department, addressed the audience about the essential role of early detection in combating breast cancer. He emphasized the lifesaving potential of regular breast self-examinations and clinical screenings. “Women should perform self-exams monthly, ideally a few days after their period ends,” he advised. “Look for any lumps, swelling, discoloration, or unusual discharge from the nipples. Should any concerning signs arise, it’s imperative to consult a doctor for further evaluation.”

Dr. Muhammad also reviewed various screening options, highlighting that mammograms are crucial for women over 40, while younger women might find ultrasounds beneficial. He urged attendees to maintain healthy lifestyle choices, such as avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption, as these factors can increase cancer risk.

Understanding the emotional weight of a breast cancer diagnosis, many women understandably feel frightened. Concerns surrounding chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or mastectomy can take a significant psychological toll. However, medical professionals affirm that early detection can lead to effective treatment.

Women are particularly at risk for breast cancer as they age, especially around 40 and during menopause, but advancements in treatment mean that even later diagnoses can be managed successfully. During the seminar, a breast cancer survivor shared her journey, recalling her struggle with the emotional heaviness of her diagnosis, which led to a second mastectomy after other treatments didn’t succeed. “I was devastated at the thought of losing my breast again,” she shared. “But I knew my life was at stake. Today, I am five years post-surgery, and I am a survivor.”

Financial burdens associated with cancer treatment can be overwhelming in Nigeria. However, initiatives like LUTH’s NSIA Cancer Center, which has helped over 11,000 patients, are paving the way for progress against cancer in West Africa. Dr. Ayodeji Oluwole, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at LUTH, called for increased government support to ensure affordable cancer care. Programs like the Chemotherapy Access Programme (CAP) aim to provide free chemotherapy drugs, and enrollment in the National Health Insurance Act (NHIA) can help lower treatment costs. “While not all breast cancer treatments are fully subsidized, we are making strides to enhance access and affordability,” he noted.

For those recovering from breast cancer, options for physical reconstruction after a mastectomy are available. Dr. Abdulrazaq Lawal, a Consultant General Surgeon at LUTH, emphasized the importance of breast reconstruction, stating it helps restore a sense of normalcy and enhances self-esteem for women.

The LUTH Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar delivered a strong message: no woman should face breast cancer alone. By promoting awareness, advocating for early detection, and ensuring comprehensive treatment, lives can be saved. The event fostered a sense of community, demonstrating that with the right support and timely intervention, the journey through breast cancer can lead not only to survival but also to recovery.

Asia’s friendliest city- Taipei beats Tokyo to win the title, the city is the least friendly

In a recent announcement, the language learning platform Preply revealed its rankings for the “20 Friendliest Cities in Asia 2024,” with Taipei securing the top position. This thriving metropolis outshined popular cities such as Singapore, New Delhi, and Seoul. The rankings were developed using various criteria, including return visitor rates, diversity acceptance, and safety indices.

When assessing these cities, Preply considered key factors such as English language fluency, safety ratings, the likelihood of visitors returning, and the general friendliness towards international tourists. Notably, the criteria also included attitudes toward LGBTQ+ individuals.

In an interesting twist, Taipei has emerged as the frontrunner among celebrated Asian tourist locations. The city garnered a remarkable score of 89 for its friendliness towards foreign visitors, a testament to Taiwan’s progressive visa policies. Furthermore, Taipei received the highest score of 66 for its acceptance of diversity, surpassing other major cities like Bangkok and Tokyo. Its impressive safety rating of 84.55 placed Taipei second in the rankings, just behind Kyoto, Japan. Although English proficiency wasn’t a metric it was assessed on, Taipei excelled in other categories, solidifying its reputation as Asia’s friendliest city.

Singapore followed closely in second place, primarily due to its outstanding English proficiency score of 631. The widespread use of English in Singapore allows foreign travelers to interact with locals effortlessly, enriching their travel experiences without the barrier of language.

New Delhi, Seoul, and Chennai rounded out the top five, taking third through fifth places, respectively. Hong Kong scored a moderate three out of five for friendliness towards foreigners, placing it at 16th in the list. Popular tourist hotspots for Hong Kong residents, such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, ranked 11th, 17th, and 19th respectively, with Shanghai coming in at 14th.

The report also highlighted the “10 Least Friendly Cities in Asia,” with Mandalay in Myanmar, alongside cities in Saudi Arabia and Jakarta in Indonesia, topping this less-than-flattering list. Beijing and Shenzhen in China were also mentioned among the least friendly cities on the continent.

In her inaugural address, QS Bukola Aluko-Olokun reflected on the traditionally male-dominated leadership of this Chapter. “It is well-known that the leadership within this Chapter has historically been male-dominated. Yet, recent changes signal a commitment to gender inclusivity, and I am honored to take on this role as a beacon of hope for my female colleagues both within this chapter and beyond,” she stated. Expressing her gratitude, she added, “Today, we are making history in the Kaduna Chapter. I stand before this distinguished gathering with humility and profound appreciation to God for this opportunity. I am grateful to my colleagues for trusting me and my Senate with the stewardship of this esteemed chapter for the next two years. Together, we will strive for excellence.”

Touching on the challenges ahead, she highlighted their chosen theme: “Fostering Innovation: Aligning Entrepreneurship Skills and Quantity Surveying for Career Development.” She explained, “This theme has been carefully crafted to ensure our members are equipped with insights that integrate entrepreneurship with quantity surveying practice. We are particularly focused on young Quantity Surveyors, who represent the future of our profession and must thrive amid Nigeria’s current economic challenges.”

Acknowledging the need for synergy between their initiatives and the broader objectives of NIQS, she emphasized the importance of empowering young professionals with additional skills beyond quantity surveying, especially in mechanical and electrical fields. “This is crucial for diversifying their income streams, ultimately enhancing their capacity as independent contractors within the construction industry—a key step for sustained growth.”

She also highlighted plans for capacity building through collaborations with national bodies, offering training on software and emerging trends to keep members at the forefront of innovation. “We believe that enhancing our knowledge of these tools is essential for improving the productivity of our quantity surveying services.”

QS Aluko-Olokun underscored the importance of collaboration with the Kaduna State Government and its agencies while focusing on soft skills development through quarterly seminars and ongoing professional development opportunities. She expressed her desire to elevate the Chapter’s visibility and outreach through advocacy efforts in educational institutions and more.

While laying out these key objectives, she affirmed the importance of engaging with senior colleagues to benefit from their experience and guidance. QS Aluko-Olokun also took a moment to acknowledge the contributions of former chairpersons, NIQS President QS Kene Nzekwe, and other prominent figures for their unwavering support throughout her journey.

In her message of gratitude, she thanked her husband, children, friends, colleagues, and various corporate bodies for their support in making the event a success.

Following her address, NIQS President QS Kene C. Nzekwe, FNIQS, addressed the audience, emphasizing the core values of the profession. “Quantity Surveyors are trained professionals who manage project costs and procurement from inception to maintenance across all sectors, playing a vital role in promoting sustainable development,” he stated. He highlighted the importance of ethical practices, stressing the need for transparency and accountability in the construction industry.

Dock workers strike and people rush to buy supplies. Huo Chu- Contingency measures have been taken

On the East Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico, an unprecedented strike involving 45,000 dockworkers across 36 ports began on the first of the month, marking the first such action in 47 years and significantly disrupting the supply chain. New York Governor Kathy Hochul addressed this situation, emphasizing that her administration is focused on keeping supply chains operational in both New York and New Jersey. “We are committed to making sure supermarkets and healthcare facilities have the supplies they need,” she stated. Hochul urged both labor and management to reach a resolution and cautioned New Yorkers against panic buying, warning that such behavior could exacerbate supply shortages and drive prices up.

Upon learning about the strike at the end of last month, Hochul noted that the state government swiftly activated contingency plans. Both state officials and manufacturers have taken preventive measures to avoid the kind of supply chain disruptions witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, around 100,000 containers are stuck at the ports of New York and New Jersey, and the governor reassured the public that efforts are underway to efficiently unload those containers.

Hochul pointed out that New York’s food supply has significant dependencies on sources from Canada, California, and Mexico, reassuring residents that there are no immediate concerns regarding availability. She also mentioned that the majority of medical supplies, including pharmaceuticals, are transported by air and therefore are not expected to be impacted by the strike.

Experts have suggested that this could be one of the most severe strikes in U.S. economic history, with JP Morgan estimating daily losses could hit as much as $50 billion due to the disruptions. Sectors such as construction, automotive, and certain imported consumer goods are anticipated to be heavily affected. Hochul aimed to ease public concern by stating that prices for gas, natural gas, and oil are not expected to rise because of the strike.

However, Matthew Shay, CEO of the National Retail Federation, warned that the strike might create a “ripple effect,” leading to potential shortages that could reignite inflation. In response, the Biden administration stated on the second that while they would not intervene in the strike, they also do not support it.

Animal diplomacy gone awry- Japan returns 2 pandas to China in advance and plans to return 16 more ibises

In a captivating development regarding the intricate relationship between China and Japan, we find the case of two endangered birds, the Japanese crested ibises named “Yangyang” (right) and “Youyou” (left), that were gifted to Japan by China. Historically, China has often utilized what might be termed “animal diplomacy” with its international partners. However, this tactic seems to have encountered challenges in recent years, particularly following a series of attacks on Japanese citizens in China, which have further complicated diplomatic relations.

On September 29, the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo took the initiative to return two giant pandas to China. Shortly thereafter, it was revealed that the Japanese government would be returning at least 16 crested ibises—birds that symbolize the successful collaborative conservation efforts between China and Japan—after an eight-year pause.

Reported by Kyodo News, the crested ibis is regarded as extinct in Japan, with the last confirmed wild specimen declared extinct in 2003. The birds currently in Japan are descendants of those brought over from China in 1990, representing a joint breeding effort that underscores the friendship between the two nations.

Under a memorandum signed in 1985, known as the “China-Japan Joint Protection Plan for the Crested Ibis,” both countries committed to legislative, breeding, and educational initiatives aimed at conserving the species.

Traditionally, Japan has returned half of the offspring of the imported ibises back to China, a practice that commenced in March 2002 and continued until March 2016, culminating in the return of 47 birds across seven instances.

However, in recent years, this process has faced hurdles due to various factors, including disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, outbreaks of avian influenza, and logistical challenges related to coordination and transportation costs between the respective governments.

Sources indicate that the 16 ibises slated for return after an eight-year break were born between 2016 and 2022 at the Sado Island Crested Ibis Protection Center in Niigata Prefecture. This new group consists of seven males and nine females. Once their health is verified, plans will be made to transport them to Beijing by the end of October. Upon their arrival, the Beijing Zoo will take over their care, completing this important conservation journey.

A late-night knife robbery attempt in Manhattan’s Chinatown ended with two men stabbed in the abdomen and arms.

In the early hours of September 30, around 3:15 AM, a robbery attempt in Manhattan’s Chinatown turned violent, resulting in two men being stabbed—one with a serious abdominal injury. According to reports from the Citizen app, the incident occurred at the intersection of Canal and Mott Streets. When police arrived, they found both victims suffering injuries: one had been stabbed in the stomach, while the other had an arm injury.

Police communications indicate that the incident is being investigated as an attempted robbery, with three suspects armed with knives fleeing the scene after attacking the victims. Local news outlet 1010WINS reported that the victims, aged 24 and 27, were taken to Bellevue Hospital and are now in stable condition.

As of now, details about the ongoing investigation remain scarce. A spokesperson from the precinct has confirmed that they are in the process of gathering information but have no additional updates at this time. There is currently no information available regarding the suspects’ identities or whether they belong to the Asian community.

Even though the incident took place in a commercial area of Chinatown, the late hour resulted in fewer potential witnesses. Jiaying Chen, a member of the Manhattan Community Board 3, pointed out that locals typically avoid the streets during those hours, leading her to suspect that the assailants might be outsiders. She also suggested that the victims may not have been residents of the area.

Chinatown has recently experienced a surge in violent crimes during the night, including several incidents of severe violence. Earlier in September, a shocking robbery turned deadly when a gunman followed a family home into their apartment building and shot a Chinese woman at close range in the hallway, resulting in her death. Furthermore, the area neighboring Chinatown and Little Italy has reported multiple injury incidents over the past month.

Chen expressed her concerns about changing safety dynamics in the community, recalling a time when gangs and troublemakers rarely ventured into Chinatown at night. Back then, the neighborhood was bustling with young workers enjoying late-night meals and playing Mahjong, creating a vibrant atmosphere that deterred crime. However, she reflected that this vibrancy seems to have diminished, leaving the streets feeling more vulnerable to homelessness and unruly youth.

Djokovic argues Sinner doping case is ‘not helping’ tennis – video

In a recent interview, Novak Djokovic shared his thoughts on the ongoing doping case surrounding Jannik Sinner, emphasizing that it’s “not helping tennis at all.” Earlier this year, Sinner tested positive for a banned substance twice but was later cleared to compete by an independent tribunal. His remarkable journey culminated in a victory at the US Open, yet the World Anti-Doping Agency has since appealed the tribunal’s ruling.

As Djokovic geared up for this week’s Shanghai Masters, where Sinner is the top seed, he addressed the current situation in tennis. “Tennis has a system that is not working well,” he remarked, highlighting concerns that “even those who don’t closely follow our sport are starting to notice the numerous inconsistencies and the many governing bodies involved.”
