How we met- ‘We got chatting on the plane – and she suggested I move in with her’

Kate, 49, and Abby, 52, struck up a conversation on a flight from New York to London in the 90s. They have been close friends ever since
Lizzie CernikThu 17 Oct 2024 14.00 BSTLast modified on Thu 17 Oct 2024 14.02 BSTShareAs a friendly student who loved to travel, striking up a conversation on a flight wasn’t unusual for Kate. But when she boarded a plane headed from New York to London in January 1996, she had no idea she would be making a friend for life. “I’d spent the previous summer interning for Rolling Stone magazine and a publishing company in New York, and I was returning for New Year to visit pals,” she says. “I was then going back to university in London.”
She introduced herself to Abby, in the neighbouring seat. “I’d studied in Bristol during my junior year in college and fallen in love with a British boy,” says Abby. “After completing my studies in the States and training at culinary school, I was on my way back to the UK to gain experience working in restaurants for three months.” She was also “incredibly excited” to be seeing her boyfriend again.
Kate and Abby clicked instantly. “We talked for the entire flight,” says Kate. “We had a paper menu and I remember we were laughing at the pretentious way it was written, because it was just standard plane food.”

“We were living in Hackney and threw lots of themed parties. Once, we did a James Bond theme and Abs bought ‘0’ and ‘7’- shaped cake tins,” says Kate. “We had so much fun together.”
‘We threw lots of themed parties’ … Abby and Kate at their James Bond party in Hackney, 1996View image in fullscreen‘We threw lots of themed parties’ … Abby and Kate at their James Bond party in Hackney, 1996In April 1996, Abby broke up with her British boyfriend before returning to New York. Kate finished university and started working in film as a casting assistant, while Abby became a chef for Martha Stewart’s TV show. Despite the distance, they kept in touch with regular phone calls and would visit each other when they could.
A few years later, Kate got the opportunity to move to New York as a junior manager for a talent agency. By that time, Abby was working for a continental restaurant and living in Brooklyn. Their friendship continued and they loved being able to see each other more regularly. “We used to throw parties all the time and Abby would always make the food. We would have an Oscars party every year, with prizes for the best dressed.”
Abby has always appreciated her friend’s style and creativity. “When I got married in 2006, she designed all the invitations.” Kate moved to Brighton, England, in 2009, to focus on creative writing. She now works for a medical communications agency and is writing her second novel. “Abby actually features in my first book,” she says. “It was crowdfunded and one of the pledge options was to name a character after yourself, which Abby’s mum did on her behalf.”
Abby still lives in Brooklyn and runs a cookery school, events space and an American restaurant in the Lower East Side. They keep in touch via long Zoom chats and Kate is hoping to celebrate her “big birthday” next year at Abby’s restaurant.
“We’ve both had tangled paths with relationships and work challenges and we always support each other through,” says Kate. “Neither of us have children, though not through choice. Sometimes we chat about whether we might want to foster and adopt in the future.”
Abby describes Kate as a true friend and someone who will always be loyal. “I can talk to her about anything, and that’s something we’ve done all these years.”
Whatever is happening, Abby is Kate’s “go-to” person to mull things over. “We know we’ve always got each other’s backs and we’re never judgmental,” she says. “We have the same approach that life is short and you just have to give things a whirl.”

Canton Fair Observation- Cross-border e-commerce helps Chinese companies “go overseas”

In a glass-walled studio, two hosts are enthusiastically showcasing automotive models to the camera, speaking in English about their products. On the other end of the line, online overseas buyers are inquiring about crucial details such as “battery life,” “price,” and “0 to 100 km/h acceleration time.” The scene then transitions to real-time footage of electric vehicles and automotive factories at the exhibition, where the hosts respond to the buyers’ interests live.

The 136th China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, is currently taking place in Guangzhou. Highlighting this event’s trade services, the cross-border e-commerce showcase has attracted major companies like Amazon and Alibaba International, providing participating businesses with streamlined trading services.

“Live streaming from the exhibition greatly increases brand visibility and exposure,” shared Cheng Mo, General Manager of Shenzhen Hope Technology Co., Ltd. He noted that over 90% of their orders come from cross-border e-commerce platforms, primarily catering to Europe and the Americas. The company has prepared its latest bestsellers and innovative products for demonstration in both the exhibition’s booth and the shared international livestreaming studio, likening it to a global press conference.

“We have sent experienced sales personnel to host the livestream in the shared studio, showcasing advanced agricultural machinery, including GPS-enabled unmanned tractors and orchard machinery,” said Cao Lu, General Manager of New Dao Yuan (Shandong) Digital Technology Co., Ltd. He believes that the outlook for exporting agricultural machinery is promising. “Commercial land overseas, large estates, small farms, and personal yards all require agricultural machinery. Leveraging cross-border e-commerce platforms can accelerate market entry and rapidly establish distribution networks overseas.”

This year marks Amazon Global Selling’s debut at the Canton Fair, where they offer comprehensive guidance and services ranging from store registration to supply chain management, supporting businesses in their transformation and upgrades.

According to Qiu Sheng, Vice President of Amazon China and Head of Market Development for Amazon Global Selling in the Asia-Pacific, Chinese enterprises venturing into cross-border e-commerce are diversifying. “Sellers from cities within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, the Yangtze River Delta, and North China are increasingly turning to Amazon for cross-border opportunities,” he explained. Qiu highlighted the potential of unique industrial hubs, such as wig production in Xuchang, tin cabinets in Luoyang, women’s pants in Zhengzhou, and textiles in Wuhan, showcasing their significant overseas prospects.

A report released by Wanlihui in collaboration with Deloitte projects that small and micro enterprises account for over 90% of the cross-border e-commerce sector, making them the primary players in digital trade exports. However, this also indicates a highly competitive landscape where businesses face numerous challenges in seeking stable growth.

Xie Shijun, Partner-in-Charge of Deloitte China’s Technology Sector, noted that an increasing number of cross-border e-commerce firms are establishing themselves in emerging economies, such as those in the ASEAN region, boosting local e-commerce development. Platforms like Alibaba’s AliExpress, Lazada, and TikTok Shop are becoming major trading platforms in emerging markets across the Asia-Pacific, offering diverse services to help sellers expand their reach internationally. Looking ahead, more platforms and sellers are expected to enter the cross-border e-commerce arena.

Controversial dynamic ticket pricing to be banned in Australia amid sweeping federal crackdown

Anthony Albanese says ‘dodgy’ trading practices, ‘hidden fees and traps are putting even more pressure on the cost of living’ and need to be stopped

Anthony Albanese and the treasurer, Jim Chalmers, will on Wednesday announce plans to ban unfair trading practices under Australian consumer law, the latest consumer-focused competition and pricing changes proposed by the government and badged as cost-of-living relief.
“Hidden fees and traps are putting even more pressure on the cost of living and it needs to stop,” Albanese said.

The government said it would legislate “a general prohibition on unfair trading practices”, including “specific prohibitions of a range of dodgy practices”.
The Treasury will consult on the design of that scheme, but Chalmers’ office said areas to be addressed include “subscription traps”, which make it difficult to cancel a subscription, “drip pricing”, where extra fees are gradually added along each stage of a purchase such as for concert tickets, or websites requiring customers to set up accounts which are unnecessary for the purchase they want to make.
Green Day in Sydney for $500 – is dynamic pricing reserving live music for the rich?Read moreAlso to be banned are online marketing ploys which “aim to confuse or overwhelm consumers, omit or hide material information, or create a false sense of urgency or scarcity”. Those are said to include “warnings that a customer only has limited time to purchase a product”, commonly used by some large online retailers.
Another key proposal will be to address “dynamic pricing”, which the government described as where product prices change during the transaction process. It is a controversial fee structure, which can see prices spike high above the originally advertised price. The practice recently came under scrutiny after highly sought concert tickets went on sale in Australia.
Tickets for American rock band Green Day’s tour rose to up to $500, and the pricing model has also been activated for Pearl Jam, the Australian Grand Prix and Australian Open tickets.
Ticketing giants Ticketmaster and Ticketek have defended the practice, saying prices were set by artists and their teams, and that demand-driven pricing mitigates the problem of ticket scalping.

A supersonic swindle: my £1,423 Oasis Ticketmaster hellRead moreThe federal arts minister, Tony Burke, told the ABC’s Four Corners, in an episode aired on Monday, that addressing “surge pricing” was “not something we’re looking at at the moment”.
But Wednesday’s announcement said the government would look to address dynamic pricing as part of its crackdown on pricing issues.
“From concert tickets to hotel rooms to gym memberships, Australians are fed up with businesses using tricky tactics that make it difficult to end subscriptions or add hidden fees to purchases,” Albanese and Chalmers said.
“These practices can distort purchasing decisions, or result in additional costs, putting more pressure on the cost of living.”
Albanese described the examples as “dodgy practices that rip consumers off”; Chalmers called them “dodgy deals”.
“Whether it’s traps that make it difficult or confusing to cancel a subscription, hidden fees and charges at different stages of a purchase, deceptive or manipulative practices online or making it difficult for people to report problems with their products or services, we’re going to change the rules,” the treasurer said.

(Rural Travel·Looking at Revitalization) Shanxi Daning- Let more elderly people have something to rely on.

On October 15, in Linfen, Shanxi Province, a recent development aimed at enhancing the quality of life for elderly residents has sparked significant interest. We had the opportunity to speak with some local seniors about the new mutual aid center established in their village.

“Since all my children have gone away for work, I come here for lunch every day. It only costs me 50 cents, and the food is delicious with plenty of options,” shared 75-year-old Shan Wujin from Lian Village.

Lian Village, located 15 kilometers from the county seat in the northeast part of Daining Township, has a population of 117 residents, including 26 seniors aged 75 and over. This year, the village has taken an initiative by pooling resources to create a mutual aid center for the elderly, utilizing space voluntarily provided by local families. This center aims to help seniors enjoy their later years together, without the need to leave their village.

In fact, the Lian Village Elderly Mutual Aid Center officially opened on August 21, 2024. It operates on a voluntary basis and offers services to elderly residents aged 75 and above who wish to enjoy communal meals. From Monday to Friday, seniors can enjoy a nutritious lunch for just 0.5 yuan.

The center’s staff is recommended by the elders themselves, ensuring a friendly and comfortable environment. Regular sanitization of tables and utensils is conducted, and additional services such as daily care, housekeeping, psychological counseling, and health care are available for those in need, allowing seniors to thrive in a supportive atmosphere.

Jing Rulin, another village elder, expressed, “Since the mutual aid center opened, I come here daily not just for the great food, but also for the company.” He noted that besides offering meals, the center also monitors health by regularly checking blood pressure, blood sugar, and heart rates among the seniors.

Moreover, the mutual aid center maintains a detailed health record for each senior, with weekly physical check-ups conducted by village medical staff. They also offer community services like free haircuts, mutual assistance among neighbors, and mental health support primarily provided by volunteer college students.

The primary goal behind the establishment of this center is to ensure that elderly residents feel comfortable and secure, while also giving peace of mind to their children who work far from home. Li Yonghong, the village Party Committee Secretary, stated, “In the future, we will continually enhance the comprehensive services offered by the mutual aid center, improve facilities, and train staff in medical care, communication skills, and etiquette. Our aim is to develop a multifaceted, standardized, and regulated management approach for the center so that more and more elderly individuals can enjoy a fulfilling and happy retirement.”

CNN- Israel is ready to attack Iran in retaliation, fearing before the US election_1

U.S. officials anticipate that Israel will launch attacks against Iran before the November 5 elections, as a form of retaliation. However, officials indicate that these actions may be focused solely on Iranian military targets, rather than nuclear facilities or oil installations. This follows Iran’s recent firing of nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel, raising global concern over how and when Israel will respond.

Sources have revealed that Israel is prepared to strike back against Iran but has assured the United States, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, that the retaliation will be limited to military targets. According to various U.S. officials, Netanyahu is acutely aware that military action against Iran could bring the Middle Eastern conflict to the forefront of voter concerns prior to the elections, potentially reshaping the political landscape and complicating diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Israel.

One insider mentioned that while Netanyahu is very mindful of U.S. politics, the timing of Israel’s military response is not directly linked to the American election. Concern over potential political fallout in Israel remains a priority, with another source stating that the method of Israel’s attacks on Iran will be carefully managed to avoid any perception of political interference in the U.S. elections.

CNN has reported that while Israel is ready to attack Iran, additional details surrounding the planned actions remain undisclosed.

The regional tensions have escalated significantly since the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike on September 27. Following that, Iran launched missiles at Israel on October 1. This marks one of the highest points of tension in the region since the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, leading to widespread international scrutiny over whether the situation could escalate into a broader regional conflict.

After the missile launches from Iran, Netanyahu vowed that Iran would “pay the price.”

French President Emmanuel Macron recently urged countries to cease arms exports to Israel unless the country agrees to a ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza. In a phone call on October 15, Netanyahu conveyed to Macron that Israel opposes any “unilateral ceasefire” in its conflict with Hezbollah, asserting that such a move would only revert Lebanon’s security situation to previous instability.

Netanyahu assured Macron that Israel would not accept any arrangements that could hinder its fight against Hezbollah.

On October 16, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that Hezbollah had launched nearly 50 missiles into Israeli territory, but the statement did not include casualty or damage figures.

Hezbollah’s deputy secretary-general, Naim Qassem, warned on October 15, through a recorded message, that Israel should accept the ceasefire proposal from Lebanon, or else face dire consequences.

Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that an Israeli missile attack on the morning of October 16 resulted in the death of Ahmad Kahil, the mayor of the southern Lebanese city of Nabatieh, along with several municipal workers who were caught in the strike.

Eno’s Political Inclusion Strategy in Akwa Ibom

Tony Anichebe writes about the inclusive government being run by Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom state to accommodate all irrespective of political parties’ affiliation.
In Akwa Ibom state, the political climate is gradually evolving in a manner not seen since the creation of the state and the return of democracy in 1999. Under Governor Umo Eno, the state is experiencing a more harmonious and cordial relationship between the government and members of opposition parties. It’s quite unprecedented.
Politics in the state had always been a winner-takes-all in which the ruling party, the Peoples DemocraticParty (PDP) ensured that the perks and lucre were shared only among its members.
There was always a wide gap in political and social status between those whose party was in power and those in opposition. The relationship was so strained that attending social function organized by a member of the opposition party could attract sanctions from the party in power for such member(s).
That was the norm until the election of Pastor Umo Eno as the governor of Akwa Ibom state in 2023. Pastor Eno, who described himself as the least qualified for the exalted seat, faced many legal hurdles before a big relief came from the Supreme Court.
Determined to bring a new lease of life to the politics of the state, Eno publicly announced his desire to embrace every son and daughter of Akwa Ibom state who is ready to add value to the growth and development of the state, irrespective of his social or political inclination.
To match words with action, he personally extended olive branch to all those who worked against his ambition during the election, an invitation that rattled many members of the ruling PDP because it was a complete departure from the partisan politics of the past.
The high point of the governor’s reach-out was when he, along with some members of his cabinet and stakeholders of his party, visited the Abuja residence of Chief Godswill Akpabio, shortly after he was elected Senate President.
At the reception party that followed, the governor pledged his readiness to work with Akpabio for the overall interest and development of the state.
Few weeks later, he formally received the Senate President, a prominent leader of the All progressives Congress, at the executive chambers of the Government House in Uyo and later feted the Senate President and his entourage to an elaborate dinner same evening at the banquet hall of Government House. This became a complete turning point in the politics of the state and, for the first time, Akwa Ibom people really understood the meaning of politics of inclusion.
In reverence to the Senate President, the governor ensures that his government gives full compliments to the Senate President anytime he visits the state.
Early this year, Eno attended the reception organized for the Senate President by the people of the Ikot Ekpene senatorial district with his retinue of commissioners, aides and supporters to add color to the event.
An elated Akpabio praised the governor for the synergy he is building to ensure peace and development in the state. Eno’s predecessor has a very frosty relationship with Akpabio.
On countless times either Senator Akpabio or his dear wife has attended events organized by the governor which was a complete departure to the politics of the past that was bedeviled by lack of tolerance and zero cooperation with opposition party members in the state.
Only recently, the governor lost his beautiful wife of over 38 years to the cold hands of death and Chief Akpabio was among the first sympathizers to visit the bereaved governor and consoled him.
Last week after months of preparations for the local government councils election in the state, political pundits predicted a possible clash of interest between the governor and the APC leader. Senator Akpabio, knowing the intrigues that involve local government councils election nationwide, had played down the expectations of his party on the outcomes of the vote.
Records show that its always a field day for the ruling party in each state and no compromise. However, Eno’s Political Inclusion saw a complete departure in Akwa Ibom state by surrendering the Senate President’s local government council to him and further letting the Minister of State for Petroleum (gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, to have some councillors in his Ika council area.
Political analysts see the latest compromise as a well designed strategy to further consolidate not just the relationship between the Senate President and the governor, but to pave way to the 2027 politics. Analysts now believe that both the governor and the Senate President should be reelected in 2027 so as to consolidate the new era of inclusion, harmony and development in the state.
Speaking recently on his relationship with the Senate President and APC at a press conference in Uyo, Eno highlighted that the peace, growth and development of the state remain his priority.
He maintained that partisan politics ends after election and governance must take centre stage if the state must make any meaningful progress, stressing his willingness to work with any son or daughter of Akwa ibom state irrespective of political inclination.
The political adviser to the governor, Dr Godwin Ntukudeh who represented the governor during the 2024 birthday party of the immediate past State Chairman of Young Progressive Party (YPP) in Akwa state, Pastor Nyenime Andy, said the governor insisted that the opposition leader be honored on his day because he is a prominent Akwa Ibom son who has and still contributing his quota to the development of the state. The governor presented him with a beautiful birthday gift.
A former member of the House of Representatives and Media Consultant to the governor, Mr Aniekan Umana told Journalists in many of the venues where free foods were being distributed by the state government through Bulk Purchase Agency recently that the governor had warned that the food must cut across partisan party lines to every deserved indigene as hunger knows no party or association.
On his part, Mr. Iniobong Ekong, a Commissioner for lands and town planning in the state, described Governor Eno’s style of leadership as very unique and outstanding, stressing that the governor puts the interests of the state far above any personal or partisan interest.
Senator Ekong Sampson who represents Akwa Ibom South in the Senate said the political inclusion engendered by the governor has ensured not just peace in the state but rapid development as Akwa Ibom people in both federal level and state work in synergy with the common interests of ensuring that the state soars in all ramifications.
Today, Akwa ibom state under the leadership of Governor Eno has not only demystified government through unparalleled show of love and compassion to the vulnerable persons across the state and his desire to erode completely the barrier created by partisan politics after election which hinders good governance is glaring and receiving wide applause and commendations across party lines.
2027 is fast approaching and if his style of governance and the tempo at which he is coopting every willing to work Akwa Ibom indigene into his administration at different levels irrespective of political party affiliation is sustained, then his return to the hilltop mansion may be a mere walk over on his would be opponents.
-Anichebe writes from Uyo.

Rivers of Crises

By Dakuku Peterside
The ongoing economic crisis has reached every corner of the nation, touching the rich and poor, urban and rural dwellers alike. With inflation rates climbing to about 33% as of August 2024, living costs have risen dramatically. Food prices alone have skyrocketed by more than 30%, placing a significant strain on household incomes. Families that were once able to get by are now struggling to afford necessities like food, fuel, and healthcare.
This is not a crisis we can afford to ignore.
Many Nigerians feel their government, both at the local and State levels, works against them rather than for them. Government institutions, law enforcement agencies, and tax offices are often seen as riddled with inefficiency and bribery. This makes navigating daily life even more difficult for average citizens, who must contend with constant bureaucratic hurdles. It’s the average citizen who bears the brunt of these systemic flaws.
Amid these crises, Nigeria’s democracy itself is under threat. Citizens’ faith in democracy is fast eroding. When the economic, governance, and security systems fail, the public’s ability to participate in governance and enjoy basic rights promised by democracy is severely hampered. Nowhere isthis more apparent than in Rivers State, a region whose political crisis has become a significant threat to Nigerian democracy.
Despite several attempts to stabilise the situation, the crisis deepens, creating nationwide concern. Due to its oil resources and geographical location, Rivers State, one of Nigeria’s most strategic states, has become a focal point for political conflict. The State’s political turmoil has far-reaching consequences for Nigeria’s democratic health, as instability in one of the nation’s most economically significant states sends shockwaves through the broader political landscape.
Efforts by political leaders and mediators to resolve the crisis in Rivers have so far proven unsuccessful. Tensions in the State are continuously high, making it a potential battleground for violence. This situation has become so concerning that democracy advocates across Nigeria worry about the ripple effects this crisis could have nationwide. If left unresolved, the unrest in Rivers may undermine the very foundation of Nigeria’s democracy, leading to a potential outbreak of violence.
One of the key reasons this crisis poses such a grave threat is its impact on democratic institutions. The judiciary, police, and security agencies, which are meant to uphold the rule of law and protect citizens, were intensely scrutinised during theRivers crisis. In particular, the judiciary has been accused of being politically influenced, leading to a loss of public trust in its impartiality. In Rivers, conflicting court rulings have further eroded confidence in the justice system. This manipulation oflegal outcomes raises severe concerns about the future of democracy in the State and, by extension, the nation.
Similarly, the media’s role in shaping public perception and its potential impact on the crisis cannot be overlooked. The media, often accused of bias and sensationalism, can escalate or de-escalate the crisis through its coverage. Its influence on public opinion can either fuel or dampen the flames of political discord. This perception undermines the credibility of these institutions, making them seem like tools of political elites rather than defenders of public safety.
The perceived compromised stance of the Nigerian police on theRiverscrisis has increased the potential for violence, as citizens increasingly lose confidence in the capacity of police to be an impartial law enforcement institution. The general perception is that Nigerian police is an active participant in the crisis.
The effect of this crisis is not limited to Rivers State alone. It also has broader implications for the national government, particularly the legislative and executive arms. Many Nigerians are now questioning the federal government’s ability to intervene and restore order in the State. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, also feels the strain. Because all the key actors profess to belong to the party, the party’s inability to resolve the political turmoil in Rivers is further damaging its public image. Already viewed by many as an ineffective opposition, the PDP risks losing even more public trust as the crisis drags on. A 2023 public opinion poll showed that only 34% of Nigerians had confidence in the PDP, compared to 42% in 2021. The internal divisions within the party, exacerbated bythe conflict in Rivers, threaten to fracture it further, potentially weakening Nigeria’s democratic process.
At the core of the Rivers State crisis is a fierce power struggle for control over the State’s vast resources and a vague unknown entity called ” political structure”. Unfortunately, rather than focusing on the development of the State and the welfare of its people, political actors in Rivers are more concerned with personal gain. The fierce competition for political dominance has led to violence, instability, and the neglect of the State’s economic potential. Despite being one of Nigeria’s resource-endowed states, Rivers remains underdeveloped, with inadequate infrastructure and high unemployment. In 2023, the unemployment rate in the State was estimated to be 33%, reflecting the failure of successive governments in the last ten years to translate its natural resources into tangible benefits for its citizens.
Several factors have exacerbated the crisis, including personal ego clashes between political actors, a sense of imperial entitlement among the elite, and the combative nature of political discourse in the State. Political figures in Rivers often engage in inflammatory rhetoric with little regard for diplomacy or civil discourse, which does not represent the average Rivers man who is decent and polished. This toxic communication has only deepened the divisions, making resolution more difficult. However, there are potential solutions to this crisis. Dialogue, compromise, citizens’ action and focusing on the common good can help bridge the political divide. It’s essential for all stakeholders to unite against the crisis, setting aside personal ambitions for the greater good. None of the actors should assume the roleof Emperor-in-Chief of Rivers State. It would only lead to self-destruct.
Rivers’ current political crisis bears a troubling resemblance to the events in Western Nigeria during the early 1960s. Known as the “Wild Wild West” era, that period of political instability, violence, and lawlessness culminated in Nigeria’s first military coup in 1966. The crisis in Western Nigeria showed how unchecked political impunity and violence could threaten the very fabric of democracy. Many fear a similar outcome could occur in Rivers if the political actors involved do not change course. The failure to learn from history may turn Rivers State into a ticking time bomb, threatening the country’s democratic future.
Democracy thrives on institutions that remain impartial and strong, but developments in Rivers State threaten critical guardrails like security agencies and the judiciary. Security forces, particularly the police, have been accused of aligning with political factions, eroding public trust and escalating violence. Former President Goodluck Jonathan has voiced concern that the conflicting judgments issued by the judiciary on political matters are eroding confidence in the justice system. The Chief Justice of Nigeria and the National Judicial Council must step in and save the judiciary from self-destruction arising from theRivers’crises.
GovernorSiminialayi Fubarahas a duty to steer Rivers towards stability. Having been elected to govern, he is responsible for driving the development of the State and should be allowed to provide leadership. His failure to discharge that responsibility of leadership will stain hislegacy. Former Governor Nyesom Wike, now the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, must focus on his new role and allow the current governor to handle Rivers’ challenges.
As history has shown, violence is not a solution to democratic issues. The burning of Local Government Area secretariats and other violent actsbreakthe rule of law. Such actions damage the State’s reputation, set her development in reverse gear, and undermine the very foundations of democracy. Political actors must recognise that self-help and violence are counterproductive in resolving democratic challenges. The Inspector General of Policehas tolive above board and act in the spirit and letter of the law to protect lives and properties.
Political leaders involved in theRiverscrisis must urgently exercise restraint and responsibility. The people of Rivers deserve a break from the constant chaos and conflict that has plagued their State. Rivers’ people who bear the brunt of this crisis must rise to the occasion, foster discussions, express dissatisfaction with irresponsible politicians and demand good conduct.
As a stakeholder in Rivers’ politics and her development, speaking out is my moral duty. Silence is no longer an option in the face of such widespread destruction and lawlessness.
I refrained from commenting on the crisis for nearly a year, hoping that reason would prevail. However, it has become clear that without solid voices defending democratic values, the state risks descending further into instability. Intellectuals and other thought leaders must step forward to provide reasoned discourse and help guide the State through theseturbulent times. Rivers risks sliding into anarchy without these voices, and Nigeria’s fragile democracy could be at risk.

Five beheaded bodies found next to road in Mexico

They are armed with assault rifles, as well as wearing full military gear and face mask.Getty ImagesMexican army soldiers stand guard in Jalisco (file photo)The decapitated bodies of five men have been found on a road in central Mexico, in an area controlled by the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Police were called to a road near the town of Ojuelos, in Jalisco state, on Sunday morning, after plastic bags containing the remains were spotted by drivers.
Forensic experts have been trying to identify the victims, officials said.
The brutality of the murders and the disposal of the bodies in a public place are clear indications of drug cartel involvement.
National guard troops also attended the scene and found the remains wrapped in black plastic bags, the Jalisco state prosecutor's office said in a statement.
None of the victims' ages could be determined yet and an investigation has been launched, it added.
In Jalisco this year, official figures show that 1,415 people were murdered between January and September.
More than 30,000 people are killed every year in Mexico, which has one of the world's highest murder rates.
Last week, the mayor of a Mexican city plagued by drug violence was murdered less than a week after taking office.
Alejandro Arcos was killed in Chilpancingo, a city of around 280,000 people in the southwestern state of Guerrero.
President Claudia Sheinbaum, who was sworn in last week, has ruled out a return to the war on drugs of previous administrations.
She said her security plan would focus on gathering intelligence on cartels and addressing the social causes of violence – a strategy referred to as "hugs not bullets" by her predecessor in office, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
But the opposition is calling for tougher action against the gangs.
Since the government first began to use the Mexican military against the cartels in 2006, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and tens of thousands more gone missing.
