On the evening of October 23, local time, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during the BRICS Leaders’ Meeting in Kazan.
During the meeting, President Xi congratulated Egypt on its first official participation in the BRICS leaders’ summit. He emphasized that this year marks both the “China-Egypt Partnership Year” and the 10th anniversary of the two countries’ comprehensive strategic partnership. Xi reiterated China’s firm support for Egypt in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and developmental interests, expressing a desire for China and Egypt to be sincere friends and close partners in development. He called for both nations to continue their unwavering mutual support, strengthen political trust, deepen practical cooperation, enhance the quality of the Belt and Road Initiative, foster cultural exchanges, and advance bilateral relations towards building a community with a shared future in the new era. Xi also expressed China’s willingness to coordinate with Egypt to ensure the stability and sustainability of the “BRICS Plus” collaboration, further elevate the influence and voice of the Global South, and protect the common interests of developing countries.
President al-Sisi congratulated China on the 75th anniversary of its founding and noted that significant achievements have been made in cooperation between Egypt and China over the past decade since the establishment of their comprehensive strategic partnership. He acknowledged China as a sincere friend to Egypt and other African nations, expressing gratitude for the various forms of valuable assistance provided by China. Al-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to the One China principle and emphasized their complete understanding of the critical importance of the Taiwan issue for China. He expressed Egypt’s intention to align its development strategy with the Belt and Road Initiative to enhance practical cooperation across various sectors. Al-Sisi also thanked China for its support of Egypt’s formal entry into the BRICS cooperation framework, expressing a desire for close multilateral collaboration to jointly safeguard the interests of developing countries and the Global South, pushing for a more just and equitable global governance system.
The two leaders exchanged views on the current situation in the Middle East. President Xi voiced China’s deep concerns regarding the ongoing turmoil in the region, asserting that instability serves no party’s interests. He identified the Palestinian issue as central to the Middle East’s challenges, emphasizing the urgency of fully and effectively implementing relevant UN Security Council resolutions to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza promptly. Xi stated that only by actualizing the “two-state solution” can a comprehensive, just, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue be achieved. He praised Egypt’s efforts to promote a ceasefire and expressed China’s readiness to strengthen coordination with Egypt to help alleviate the Israel-Palestine conflict and foster regional stability.
