Olivia Nuzzi, the Washington correspondent for New York Magazine, recently acknowledged her “personal relationship” with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the interview subject, after taking a month-long leave from the publication. Upon her return, she agreed to part ways with the magazine.
This past September, Nuzzi’s unusual connection with Kennedy, who was running for president at the time, came to light. In response, New York Magazine reviewed all of her election-related reports and found no issues of inaccuracy or bias. They subsequently enlisted the law firm Davis Wright Tremaine for a more thorough examination, which resulted in the same conclusion.
Nonetheless, both the magazine and Nuzzi felt that the best course of action was to go their separate ways. New York Magazine expressed pride in Nuzzi’s work over her eight years as a Washington correspondent, calling her a “talented writer” and wishing her well in her future endeavors.
Ari Wilkenfeld, Nuzzi’s attorney, stated that both investigations concluded her reports were thorough. Nuzzi felt content, though not surprised, asserting that she had “done nothing wrong.” Wilkenfeld added that her reporting has been well-received and praised during her tenure at the magazine. Nuzzi expressed deep gratitude to her colleagues and readers and is now looking forward to a new chapter in her career.
At just 31 years old, Nuzzi emerged as one of the most prolific political reporters during the Trump administration. Her extensive network allows her to deliver timely and impactful reporting, which has garnered criticism from both the left and right. One of her notable pieces published on July 4, described President Biden as a “sleepy driver” holding the steering wheel but struggling to stay awake. This portrayal drew sharp backlash from Biden’s supporters, but just weeks later, Biden announced his decision to not run for re-election.
Following the controversy in September, Nuzzi admitted to having a “personal” but not “physical” relationship with Kennedy. A spokesperson for Kennedy stated that the two had only met once, during the interview. In light of potential conflicts of interest, New York Magazine published an apology to its readers, acknowledging that the situation undermined the trust between the publication and its audience.
The situation also brought Nuzzi’s former fiancé, Ryan Lizza, a Politico correspondent, into the spotlight. Nuzzi obtained a restraining order against Lizza on October 1, prohibiting him from coming near her.
