After more than 20 years of tribal struggle, the largest dam removal project in the United States is completed

After more than two decades of relentless advocacy, the indigenous tribes have celebrated a monumental victory with the complete removal of four dams on the Klamath River. This historic initiative, recognized as the largest dam removal in U.S. history, signifies a pivotal moment for local tribes that have fought tirelessly to “liberate” the Klamath River, which spans hundreds of miles between California and Oregon.

In a report by the Associated Press, it was noted that local tribes gathered substantial evidence through protests, public hearings, and legal challenges to highlight the environmental devastation caused by the hydroelectric dams, particularly their adverse effects on salmon populations.

Salmon are deeply woven into the cultural and spiritual fabric of the tribes. They argue that the dams disrupted the fish’s connection to their natural habitats, resulting in significant die-offs attributed to deteriorating water quality.

Mark Bransom, CEO of the Klamath River Renewal Corporation, the organization leading the restoration efforts, emphasized that the removal of the dams would not have been achievable without the tribes’ persistent efforts to shine a spotlight on the environmental and cultural damages inflicted by these structures.

PacifiCorp, the utility company responsible for building the dams between 1918 and 1962 for power generation, has seen these structures obstruct what was once the West Coast’s third-largest salmon nursery. This disruption has severely affected the salmon’s life cycle, even though they spend the majority of their lives in the Pacific Ocean and return to cooler streams to spawn.

The Klamath River Renewal Corporation also pointed out that the dams provided only minimal power—sufficient for about 70,000 households—without offering any irrigation, drinking water, or flood control benefits.

Michael Belchik, a senior water policy analyst with the Yurok Tribe, noted that since the removal of the dams, salmon are returning to their habitats, along with noticeable improvements in water temperature and quality.

However, advocates from the tribes and social activists stress that the environmental restoration process is still ongoing. Their current focus is on rehabilitating vegetation along the Klamath River and its surrounding areas.

Molli Myers, a member of the Karuk Tribe who participated in the dam removal protests, shared her story of traveling to Scotland in 2004 with 25 fellow tribespeople to attend a shareholders’ meeting of their parent company, ScottishPower. It was their chance to advocate for the removal of the Klamath dams, and she was pregnant with a toddler in tow—making it her first trip abroad.

Gathered at Calton Hill in Edinburgh, outside the venue of the ScottishPower meeting, they protested for hours, wielding posters, singing songs, and drumming. They cooked fish over whiskey barrels, sharing it with locals to explain their cause.

Having grown up as a traditional fisherwoman on the Klamath River, Myers expressed, “I was nervous, especially being pregnant; for me, it was about internalizing my responsibility to care for my child’s future.”

She poignantly recalled witnessing thousands of salmon perish due to low water levels and high temperatures, a painful reality that fueled her determination to advocate for the dismantling of the dams.

Reflecting on her journey at 41, Myers said, “What if that moment hadn’t happened? It truly felt like a call to action from the Creator.”

Does a crying baby get milk-

The normally overlooked dockworkers on the East Coast have gone on strike. While the striking workers number only 45,000, their impact is immediate and profound: for each day they are on strike, the U.S. economy loses $5 billion, and half of the nation’s imported goods begin to pile up.

The timing of this strike seems to be a calculated move by the union leaders orchestrating it. The strike follows one of the deadliest hurricanes in 50 years, Hurricane Helen, and occurs just before the quadrennial presidential election. This timing amplifies the pressure on both sides, as the hurricane has already taken a toll on the public, compounding the stress on employers. With the election approaching, neither party can afford to alienate the workers; they find themselves under constant scrutiny to meet the union’s demands.

So, what drove the workers to strike? At its core, they are advocating for increased wages and better benefits. However, it’s worth noting that wages for dockworkers in the U.S. are among the highest for blue-collar labor. For example, many dockworkers in New York Harbor earn at least $150,000 annually, and the union leader of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), President Dajah, makes over $900,000 a year, with luxuries like a yacht and a Bentley. Even tech billionaire Elon Musk remarked on social media, “This guy has more yachts than I do.”

During labor negotiations, the employers initially agreed to a salary increase of over 50% compared to the proposed six-year contract adjustments. However, the union rejected this offer, demanding annual raises instead, resulting in a staggering 77% increase in wages over the contract period, lifting the maximum hourly wage from $39 to $69.

With the election looming and the economy facing potential instability, it’s expected that the Biden administration will support the workers and pressure employers to significantly raise wages.

But who ultimately bears the cost of these wage increases? Ordinary consumers will likely feel the burden.

McDonald’s serves as a case in point. After ongoing protests and strikes, the fast-food giant has raised wages from under $5 to between $11 and $15 an hour, and up to $20 in California. Yet, during the same period, McDonald’s prices have surged to more than three times the official inflation rate, transforming affordable food into a luxury. Some consumers are being forced to cope with these changes, while others are simply opting out.

Labor and capital are indeed on the same boat. If McDonald’s experiences a downturn, workers’ jobs will be at risk. Similarly, if importers are unable to cope with the financial strain and reduce their shipments, where will the dockworkers find the opportunity to earn that $69 hourly wage?

A brief description of FDA regulations and treatment of dirty, rotten, or decomposed food

Imported conventional food, especially seafood, can sometimes present serious safety concerns. To shed light on this issue, we spoke with industry expert Daniel Hue, who emphasized that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies any food containing filthy, putrid, or decomposed elements as adulterated. This classification is governed by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938.

When the FDA conducts sampling, they consider multiple factors that could indicate contamination. Hue explained that these include the length of any hair found, the size of insect fragments, the distribution of contaminants in the sample, and the types of substances detected. The FDA works closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to implement Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) regulations, which categorize foodborne health hazards into three primary types: physical, chemical, and biological hazards.

Hue pointed out that the regulations allow the FDA to set thresholds for natural or unavoidable defects in food that don’t pose health risks. While some may believe that food manufacturers only need to keep defect levels marginally below these thresholds, the reality is that the actual average defect levels are typically much lower. These defect action levels serve as indicators for when the FDA deems food adulterated, and potential enforcement actions could involve returning products to their country of origin or destroying them in the U.S.

If a product lacks a defect action level or if an inspection reveals that the defect level or type falls short of the established standards, the FDA takes a closer look. Hue noted that their team of technical and regulatory experts reviews various criteria—often in combination—to determine the severity of the findings and their implications for regulation before deciding whether to allow the product into the market.

With a wealth of consulting experience involving the FDA, USDA, and U.S. Customs, Daniel Hue has successfully navigated countless cases in this arena. Deeply promote opening up to the outside world and help build an educational power

**Interview with Zhang Beiping, Researcher at the Chongqing Research Center for the Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics and Vice President of Sichuan International Studies University**

In today’s interconnected world, the importance of international collaboration and exchanges in education cannot be overstated. How do you see high-quality education influencing China’s integration into the global landscape and the development of a robust education system?

Zhang notes, “Education acts as a critical engine driving our educational ambitions in the context of openness.” He reflects on President Xi Jinping’s remarks at the national education conference, stressing the need for deepening educational openness. Xi advocated for a dual approach—both ‘bringing in’ resources and ‘going out’ to share China’s educational model. The third plenary session of the 20th National Congress also underscored the importance of ‘high-level educational openness,’ offering a clear framework for shaping an effective education system in this new era.

What measures can be taken to ensure that educational initiatives are aligned with both domestic priorities and global viewpoints?

Zhang emphasizes the necessity for a systematic and strategic approach to educational openness. He argues that aligning education with the country’s modernization strategies is paramount, ensuring that initiatives meet domestic needs while contributing to China’s economic and social progress. A UNESCO report has also indicated that education is a public good requiring global solidarity and collaboration. According to Zhang, we must balance our focus on domestic development with the pursuit of international cooperation. He cautions against an excessive obsession with internationalization that neglects local educational traits, just as we should avoid insularity that restricts opportunities for global collaboration.

In recent years, how has China worked to improve its educational offerings through international partnerships?

Zhang highlights that China has made significant strides by integrating high-quality international educational resources and fostering cooperation between domestic and global educational institutions. This effort has diversified educational offerings to meet the growing demand for quality international education. With China’s increasing openness, establishing educational institutions abroad has become crucial. Today, China is the world’s leading source of international students and the largest destination for overseas students in Asia, collaborating with 183 countries and signing degree recognition agreements with 59 nations. Initiatives like the “China-ASEAN Vocational Education Alliance” have also broadened educational exchanges.

What strategies do you recommend to enhance mutual understanding and cultural exchange in education?

Zhang believes that promoting mutual learning and cultural exchange through education requires improved interaction in areas such as educational policies, talent training, and curriculum development among nations. It’s critical to facilitate the exchange of educational philosophies, methodologies, and resources to yield real results in educational openness. By grounding these initiatives in local contexts, China can showcase its successes and create a model that enhances overall educational standards. He points to various successful programs, such as the U.S. Youth Ambassador Exchange Program and the China-U.S. Young Entrepreneurs Competition, that have fostered cultural exchange and educational openness.

As we face the complexities of the current global landscape, how should we tackle the challenges surrounding educational openness?

Zhang argues for a problem-oriented and goal-driven approach to enhance educational openness effectively. There must be a solid governance structure that can identify and address potential risks and challenges while safeguarding foundational support systems. We need to tackle barriers to educational cooperation decisively, adopting a comprehensive, systematic, and scientific mindset. By advancing institutional reforms and invigorating our educational initiatives, we can create a more dynamic and effective educational environment.

Finally, as the world experiences unprecedented changes, what is your vision for China’s role in global education?

Zhang envisions that China should embrace a broader perspective and confidently showcase its educational achievements. By maintaining an open mindset and learning from advanced international educational philosophies, China can assert itself as a key player in global education and make meaningful contributions to global educational governance.

Benjamin Kalu’s Eye Health Advocacy, One Patient at a Time

In recognition of this year’s World Sight Day, we had the pleasure of speaking with Udora Orizu about the impactful humanitarian and legislative initiatives spearheaded by Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. His efforts are aimed at enhancing access to eye care across Nigeria.

Historically, the significance of sight has permeated cultures, tracing back over 2,000 years to the healing work of Jesus Christ. A vivid example can be found in the Gospel of Luke: when Jesus encountered Bartimaeus, who was blind, He asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” Bartimaeus responded, “Lord, let me recover my sight.” Jesus then told him, “Recover your sight; your faith has made you well.”

In our modern world, many individuals often assume their vision is satisfactory without realizing they may require corrective lenses. Regular eye examinations are essential for the early detection of eye diseases that can go unnoticed for extended periods. A comprehensive dilated eye exam can catch issues in their early stages, making treatment to prevent vision loss significantly more effective.

Deputy Speaker Kalu has emerged as a strong advocate for eye health, blending personal commitment with legislative action to promote wellness for all. Eye health has historically received little attention, both in developed and developing nations. In Nigeria, the situation is particularly alarming, with an estimated 24 million people experiencing vision impairment and 1.3 million living with blindness. Additionally, around 50 million others suffer from eye conditions requiring basic care. Studies indicate that eye health in Nigeria has not been prioritized, often leaving individuals without access to even the most fundamental eye care services.

In response to the growing issues of global blindness, World Sight Day is celebrated each year on the second Thursday of October. Launched by the SightFirst Campaign of Lions Club International Foundation in 2000, this global initiative aims to raise awareness about blindness and vision impairment. It is now part of the VISION 2020 initiative and is coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

To tackle the urgent need for improved eye care, Deputy Speaker Kalu introduced the End Blindness Project via the Benjamin Kalu Foundation, which focuses on outreach initiatives in Bende to provide eye exams, treatments, surgeries, and prescriptions for glasses.

In October 2023, the foundation joined forces with Vision Saver Eye Care Limited to conduct a three-day medical outreach in Bende, attracting over 1,200 individuals who received critical eye care, including medications, medicated glasses, and cataract surgeries.

After receiving positive updates from the medical team, Kalu emphasized that this initiative is just the beginning and aims to extend across the nation. He expressed his pride in the work of the vision savers, noting, “Their professionalism and impact have been incredible. We will continue to address blindness not just in Bende, but throughout Abia, the Southeast, and Nigeria as a whole.”

At the Charity Champions Gala Night in June, Kalu highlighted the concerning statistics indicating that 24 million Nigerians struggle with vision impairment. He shared that through the Benjamin Kalu Foundation, over 4,000 constituents received treatment for various eye issues in the past year, demonstrating the significant impact of collective action.

Kalu reaffirmed his dedication to tackling these challenges, referring to the National Blindness and Visual Impairment Survey, which reveals that 4.2 percent of Nigerians over 40 are classified as blind. This insight fueled his sponsorship of the National Eye Centre Act (Amendment) Bill, currently under review in parliament.

This legislation aims to enhance access to specialized eye care by establishing additional centers nationwide. However, Kalu stressed that legislative action alone is insufficient; the involvement of the community is crucial.

“We need champions like you—individuals who understand the power of community,” Kalu stated. He acknowledged that existing eye care laws are outdated and require updates to meet contemporary needs and support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda for enhanced health security.

Additionally, Kalu is pursuing amendments to the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Council Act to improve efficiency, as well as to the National Eye Centre Act to create more specialized centers across the country for the prevention and treatment of eye diseases.

In a recent meeting with leaders from the Nigerian Optometric Association, Kalu highlighted the urgent need for modernization in eye care legislation, declaring, “We will pursue the amendment of the National Eye Centre Act to ensure we have specialized centers, starting with Abia.”

The commitment of Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu in the battle against blindness is commendable and should motivate all stakeholders to rally around the goals of Vision 2020 in Nigeria. Affectionately known as Utabiri Bende, Kalu is dedicated to advocating for improved eye health, one patient at a time.
