More than a dozen popular figures from Yue are on stage for the premiere of the Yue opera epic drama -A Thousand Years of Courage-

During a recent interview, local theater enthusiast Xiao Long shared her unexpected insights after attending the premiere of the original Yue Opera epic, “Dare to be Brave for a Thousand Autumns.” “I was truly amazed by how the delicate beauty of Yue Opera could convey such an epic and profound narrative,” she said. “In just one performance, it intricately weaves together the stories of over ten significant historical figures from Shaoxing, all interconnected in a remarkably innovative way.” She expressed her excitement for future performances.

The premiere occurred on the evening of October 7 at the Shaoxing Grand Theatre in Zhejiang, showcasing legendary figures such as Fan Zhongyan, Xie Daoyun, Yao Qisheng, Wang Yangming, Lu Xun, and Qiu Jin, who collectively embody the enduring “Dare to be Brave spirit.” After debuting in Shaoxing, the production is scheduled to perform at the National Grand Theatre and will embark on a national tour.

Shaoxing is known as the site where King Goujian of Yue faced hardships and ultimately sought revenge, giving rise to the “Dare to be Brave spirit.” Over the past millennium, this spirit has evolved, now symbolizing the region’s rich cultural heritage.

In the production, each scene is both interrelated and self-contained. Guided by four prominent figures—referred to as the “Shaoxing Masters” in law, military, documentation, and finance—the narrative effectively bridges the past and present.

For instance, the story of Fan Zhongyan and “Qingbai Spring” emphasizes his unwavering commitment to governance and integrity, while the tale of Xu Wei and the Flower Goddess shifts idealistic views of literary figures into a more concrete reality. Furthermore, cross-temporal dialogues among Lu Xun, Wang Yangming, and other historical figures present varied perspectives. Throughout the performance, the traditionally graceful Yue Opera transforms into an epic narrative with profound historical significance, vividly showcasing the “Dare to be Brave spirit” that has been fostered and passed down through generations.

The production is spearheaded by four Plum Blossom Award winners—Wu Fenghua, Wu Suying, Chen Fei, and Zhang Lin—complemented by nine national first-class actors and six generations of performers from the Shaoxing Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe. It creatively incorporates elements from 11 different singing styles, including the Fan, Fu, Yin, and Xu schools of Yue Opera.

Director Lu Ang remarked on the show’s innovative approach. “Not only do we highlight different styles, but we also integrated an orchestra and modern music, along with elements of dance and martial arts, transforming the traditional opera stage. Based on the audience’s enthusiastic response during the premiere, it seems they embraced this innovative expression.”

The aim of this production goes beyond merely showcasing cultural richness; it strives to promote the “Dare to be Brave spirit.” This collaborative effort between the Arts Development Center of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the People’s Government of Shaoxing’s Keqiao District represents a new exploration of “central-local cooperation.”

Chen Hao, the Party Secretary of Keqiao District, emphasized the importance of this production in artistically promoting the “Dare to be Brave spirit.” “Our goal is to make ‘Dare to be Brave for a Thousand Autumns’ a dynamic medium for perpetuating this spirit and a model for the creative transformation and innovative advancement of traditional Chinese culture,” he stated.

Let -idle fields- have -money scene- Lingling, Hunan Province, fully promotes autumn and winter planting

As autumn approaches, the vital planting season for fall and winter crops is in full swing in Yongzhou City, Hunan Province, where agricultural technicians and farmers are hard at work in the fields.

In Tai Ping Pu Village, situated in You Ting Huai Town, the villagers are busy with the rhythmic processes of plowing, furrowing, fertilizing, and sowing seeds. “We’re juggling the harvesting, land preparation, and seeding all at once to ensure a stable fall planting area. Right now, we’ve prepared over 3,000 acres and raised seedlings across more than 100 acres specifically for rapeseed,” said Tang Chunyang, head of the agricultural technology station in You Ting Huai Town.

Meanwhile, in Dang Di Township, local officials are actively planning a “rice-oil” crop rotation strategy while also developing the “rice + N” industry to promote a year-round agricultural model. The fall and winter planting season focuses heavily on cultivating rapeseed and vegetables, leading to more efficient land use and increased income for farmers.

“By identifying key growers and understanding their planting intentions, we can ensure that we complete the autumn harvest and get the land ready on time. This helps us keep our lands productive and our community engaged, maximizing the potential of idle land resources,” shared Deng Yanhong, head of the agricultural technology station in Dang Di Township. This year, the township aims to plant 16,000 acres of rapeseed, 6,000 acres of vegetables, and 800 acres of autumn grains, with clear assignments made for specific households and plots.

Fall and winter agricultural production is crucial within the annual agricultural cycle, playing a significant role in food security, boosting farmers’ incomes, and promoting rural revitalization.

Since the beginning of the year, the Zero Ling District has been focused on stabilizing area, improving yields, and maximizing benefits, while effectively supplying agricultural products. By emphasizing early and practical measures while maintaining a focus on quality, they are strategically advancing the cultivation of major autumn and winter crops like rapeseed, vegetables, green manure, and dry miscellaneous grains. The ultimate goal is to transform “idle fields” into economically productive land.

Statistics indicate that the planned area for fall and winter planting in Zero Ling is set at 445,600 acres, which includes 242,000 acres for rapeseed, 140,000 acres for vegetables, 50,600 acres for green manure, and 13,000 acres for autumn crops such as potatoes and pea pods.

Hot Dogs by Three Darlings, London- ‘Things that no one needs’ – restaurant review

**Interview with Jay Rayner: Gourmet Hot Dogs at Harrods Dining Hall**

**Interviewer:** Thanks for joining us today, Jay! I hear you recently visited Hot Dogs by Three Darlings at Harrods Dining Hall. What was your takeaway on what makes a hot dog truly special?

**Jay Rayner:** My pleasure! To me, a classic hot dog is all about indulgence—it’s meant to be enjoyed without any pretensions. Think of grabbing one from a street cart in Manhattan: it’s a simple pleasure, fun and satisfying. You want that sausage to be smoky and to have a nice snap to the casing, releasing those savory juices when you take a bite. Sadly, the gourmet versions I tried didn’t quite hit the mark.

**Interviewer:** How did you feel about the gourmet hot dogs you sampled?

**Jay Rayner:** The concept itself is a bit flawed. Adding “gourmet” to a hot dog implies a level of sophistication that doesn’t really fit what a hot dog is all about. The prices, ranging from £19 to £22, felt outrageous for what I received. The flavors and textures were underwhelming, making it seem like a sad interpretation of a hot dog.

**Interviewer:** Can you dive a bit deeper into the texture of the hot dogs?

**Jay Rayner:** Certainly! The texture was surprisingly dry and grainy, which isn’t how a hot dog should be. The casings were wrinkled and felt heavy—almost like wearing an oversized sock. It seemed they either didn’t emulsify the meat properly or the cooking was overdone. The balance is key; you want a soft, sweet bun to contrast with the salty and smoky sausage. Unfortunately, these buns were dense and unappealing.

**Interviewer:** Were there any toppings or flavors that made the experience better?

**Jay Rayner:** There were a few interesting elements, like a smear of baba ganoush under one hot dog and a hint of truffle in another. But when the main component is lacking, no amount of fancy additions can really save it. It became more of a distraction than an enhancement.

**Interviewer:** How was the overall dining experience, including service and atmosphere?

**Jay Rayner:** The ambiance of Harrods Dining Hall is gorgeous, but even that couldn’t make up for the service issues. They gave us a cold moist towel and warm sparkling water—not exactly what you want. Plus, the wine list was overpriced, with bottles that didn’t match their listed prices. Overall, it felt a bit chaotic and unpolished.

**Interviewer:** Did you find any standout dishes that you enjoyed?

**Jay Rayner:** Interestingly, the sweet, salty spiced corn ribs were the best thing I had there. It’s funny that the highlight of a hot dog venue wasn’t actually a hot dog. Overall, the experience was disappointing, especially considering Chef Jason Atherton’s reputation.

**Interviewer:** If someone is thinking about visiting Three Darlings at Harrods, what would you advise them?

**Jay Rayner:** I’d recommend managing your expectations. If you’re looking for a gourmet experience, you might want to explore alternative options. You’d likely have a better time at a classic hot dog cart or a local diner that honors the tradition. Gourmet hot dogs might sound tempting, but they didn’t deliver in this case.

**Interviewer:** Thanks for your insights, Jay! It sounds like it’s a lesson learned rather than an experience to repeat.

**Jay Rayner:** Absolutely! Thanks for having me.

New health insurance law covers infertility, substance abuse treatment and more_2

California Governor Gavin Newsom has recently made headlines by signing several significant bills aimed at transforming healthcare for residents, especially those facing infertility and families supporting loved ones struggling with substance abuse.

One of the standout provisions of this legislation requires insurance companies to offer coverage for infertility treatments. This new law mandates that major insurance providers cover not only the diagnosis and treatment but also fertility services for infertility, allowing for up to three egg retrievals and unlimited embryo transfers. Importantly, the definition of “infertility” has been broadened to include individuals who cannot conceive without medical help, actively supporting members of the LGBTQ+ community and same-sex couples aspiring to start families.

Set to take effect in July 2025, this legislation is poised to make fertility treatments and in vitro fertilization more financially accessible for millions of Californians.

In a significant public health measure, the new law also prohibits manufacturers from using per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in tampons. By January 1, 2029, all products must adhere to this regulation, and manufacturers will be required to provide comprehensive product details and register with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control by July 1, 2029, with penalties for non-compliance.

Regarding Alzheimer’s care, a comprehensive package of twelve bills has been introduced to improve services for the increasing number of patients and their families. Law enforcement officers are set to receive training on how to effectively interact with individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s, autism, and dementia. Additionally, healthcare professionals specializing in geriatric care will be mandated to pursue ongoing education in geriatric pathology and dementia care.

The state is also expanding treatment options for individuals grappling with severe substance abuse issues. New legislation now allows mental health rehabilitation centers and psychiatric facilities to offer 24-hour inpatient care for those facing serious drug addiction challenges, thereby enabling more flexible management strategies to expand the number of available treatment beds.

Finally, when parents are unable to provide sufficient breast milk for their newborns, pasteurized donor breast milk often becomes the best nutritional alternative for underweight infants. California’s new law now requires commercial insurance companies to classify donor breast milk as a necessity, aligning it with Medi-Cal standards to better assist families in need of this vital resource.

East-West Question丨Serrano-Moreno- The Enlightenment of China’s “Ecological Civilization” to Latin America

**Title: Insights on China’s Eco-Civilization from a Chilean Scholar**

**Interview with Juan Enrique Serrano-Moreno, Assistant Professor at the University of Chile’s Institute of International Studies**

**By: Zhang Yang**

Chile, despite its geographical distance from China, has taken a leading role in fostering relations with Beijing among Latin American countries. As both nations increasingly emphasize green transformation, Chilean scholar Juan Enrique Serrano-Moreno offers his perspective on China’s “eco-civilization” model and whether Latin America can craft a version that resonates locally. He recently engaged in a discussion with China News Service on these pertinent topics.

**China News Service (CNS) Reporter:** What are your observations on the different visions for the relationship between society and nature?

**Serrano-Moreno:** I find it useful to reference two science fiction films that depict contrasting views on society’s relationship with nature.

First, there’s “Avatar 2,” in which a corporation invades a primitive planet to exploit its resources, only to face fierce resistance from the indigenous inhabitants who strive to maintain their harmonious way of life. The film concludes on a hopeful note, with the natives pushing back the invaders and preserving their ecosystem. Yet, this storyline conveys a somewhat fatalistic message: humanity appears caught in a dilemma between economic progress and natural harmony, with no middle ground. This raises an unsettling question: is it easier to destroy nature than to dismantle free capitalism? Spanish philosopher Francisco Martorell has described this tale as a “pessimistic dystopia.”

On the flip side, the Chinese film “The Wandering Earth 2” portrays a future where humanity aims to move Earth away from a catastrophic solar system through technology, national planning, and international collaboration. In this narrative, China leads this ambitious endeavor without succumbing to hegemony. Unlike “Avatar,” “The Wandering Earth 2” embodies an “optimistic dystopia,” aligning closely with the eco-civilization principles that the Chinese Communist Party has been advocating since 2012.

**CNS Reporter:** How would you define China’s “eco-civilization” model?

**Serrano-Moreno:** As described by Zhang Yongsheng, director of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ Eco-Civilization Research Institute, “eco-civilization” signifies a new development paradigm whereby humanity seeks to restore the harmony with nature that was lost during the industrial era. This concept does not reject technological progress; rather, it embraces new technologies derived from “green transformation” as essential for constructing an eco-civilization.

Over the past decade, it has become evident that China is establishing itself as a global leader in tackling climate change and promoting sustainability, a vision encapsulated in “eco-civilization.” This model directly contrasts with Western economic individualism, which frequently commodifies nature and treats environmental degradation merely as a negative externality. Unlike the free-market ideals that emerged during the Western industrial revolution, China’s model is deeply rooted in its rich philosophical traditions spanning millennia.

Additionally, “eco-civilization” has been solidified in Chinese policy documents and is actively implemented through legal and administrative reforms.

**CNS Reporter:** Can the “eco-civilization” model be directly adapted to Latin America?

**Serrano-Moreno:** Applying the eco-civilization model in Latin America encounters both conceptual and practical challenges.

Some scholars, like David Harvey and David Graeber, question whether it genuinely represents a paradigm shift. They argue that, similar to the Belt and Road Initiative, eco-civilization can be perceived as a “spatial solution” or a “technological solution” to the overaccumulation crisis that capitalism experienced between 2006 and 2009.

Under this perspective, eco-civilization seems geared towards stimulating economic growth without fundamentally altering the existing development model. In China, innovations in technologies like solar panels and electric vehicles not only drive domestic green transformation but also bolster economic growth, allowing environmental crises to become opportunities—essentially, “green is gold.”

However, for Latin American countries like Chile, a lack of advanced industrial capabilities may result in a continued reliance on raw material exports, rather than the production and export of higher-value goods, which could reinforce their semi-peripheral status within the global economy.

**CNS Reporter:** Is it feasible for Latin America to develop an eco-civilization that reflects its unique characteristics?

**Serrano-Moreno:** To cultivate a distinctively Latin American eco-civilization, it is vital to align with local realities. China’s experience demonstrates that an eco-civilization model is not just theoretical; it materializes through national policies, legal reforms, and international collaboration. Latin American nations can certainly learn from China’s development strategy, particularly in harmonizing economic growth with environmental protection.

For example, addressing indigenous issues—recognizing both collective and individual rights, championing legal victories for these communities, and safeguarding their traditional lifestyles—represents a crucial area of focus in Chile and throughout Latin America. However, incorporating indigenous perspectives into legal frameworks demands ongoing commitment. By maintaining this focus while aligning with relevant diplomatic and industrial policies, Latin America can chart a path toward an eco-civilization that echoes its own unique attributes.

**Interviewee Profile:**
Juan Enrique Serrano-Moreno is an Assistant Professor at the University of Chile’s Institute of International Studies, where he also coordinates the Master’s program in International Strategy and Trade Policy.

Fire breaks out at Georgia chemical plant, authorities order evacuations

On the morning of September 29, a fire erupted at a chemical plant near Atlanta, Georgia, sending thick black smoke into the sky and prompting local authorities to issue a mandatory evacuation for nearby residents. Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel addressed the media, explaining that the fire began due to a malfunction in the plant’s sprinkler system, which resulted in a dangerous mix of water and chemicals that ultimately ignited.

“The sprinkler activated and mixed with the chemicals, which then ignited electrical wires and other materials, leading to the fire,” McDaniel reported.

The facility, operated by BioLab, specializes in producing chemicals for swimming pools and spas. Although officials characterized the fire as small in scale, television footage captured the significant smoke caused by the chemical reactions.

Situated about 25 miles from Atlanta, the incident at the plant led to evacuations in the surrounding areas. Authorities advised residents to shelter in place by closing windows and avoiding the use of air conditioning, which resulted in several road closures. The exact number of individuals affected by the evacuation or those sheltering in place remains uncertain.

In a statement to local media, BioLab confirmed that there were no injuries among employees during the incident.

Additionally, Chief McDaniel noted that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been informed about the fire.

Fagbemi to Judges- Let Your Judgements Create Industrial Harmony Capable of Attracting FDI

**Interview with Attorney-General Prince Lateef Fagbemi on the Role of the Industrial Court in Economic Growth**

**Alex Enumah, Abuja:** Prince Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, recently spoke to judges during a special session inaugurating the 2024/2025 Legal Year for the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN). In your view, what is the essential role of the NICN in promoting economic stability in Nigeria?

**Prince Lateef Fagbemi:** The National Industrial Court plays a critical role in ensuring industrial harmony, which is essential for attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). The decisions made by this court have a profound impact on the stability and efficiency of our industries. It’s crucial that these rulings are based on strong legal principles while also taking into account the complexities of the labor market.

**Alex Enumah:** You mentioned the importance of balanced justice. How do you envision achieving a sustainable equilibrium among the interests of employers, employees, and society as a whole?

**Prince Lateef Fagbemi:** Maintaining this balance is vital, especially given the rising instances of workplace discrimination and harassment. While the court must stand firmly against unacceptable labor practices, it should also advocate for positive human resource policies that foster discipline, diversity, welfare, and stability across both public and private sectors.

**Alex Enumah:** What measures do you believe the NICN should implement to improve its efficiency and judicial processes?

**Prince Lateef Fagbemi:** To meet these objectives, the NICN should continuously invest in infrastructure, human resources, and technology. Embracing technological tools is essential to reducing case backlogs, and enhancing alternative dispute resolution mechanisms is key to this effort.

**Alex Enumah:** You also mentioned a developmental review of existing labor laws. What specific changes do you think are necessary?

**Prince Lateef Fagbemi:** We need to update our trade union and labor laws to better align with current realities and the relevant International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions. This review will establish a legal framework that accurately reflects today’s workforce dynamics and fosters improved labor relations.

**Alex Enumah:** Regarding the court’s operational capacity, what can you share about the current case backlog and the workload per judge?

**Prince Lateef Fagbemi:** Since our last legal year celebration in 2022, the NICN has encountered 8,608 pending cases, with 1,616 judgments delivered. This means we currently have 6,992 ongoing cases. The data reveals a workload ratio of 186.80 cases per judge for the first quarter of 2024, indicating that some judges, particularly in divisions like Owerri and Makurdi, are facing a significantly heavier burden due to staffing shortages.

**Alex Enumah:** How do you intend to address these disparities in workload going forward?

**Prince Lateef Fagbemi:** We aim to secure increased funding to tackle these challenges and considering assigning additional judges to overburdened divisions like Owerri and Makurdi soon.

**Alex Enumah:** The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, has highlighted the wider societal implications of the NICN’s decisions. What is your perspective on this?

**Prince Lateef Fagbemi:** The court’s rulings indeed have far-reaching effects on both the economy and the community. Our decisions reflect societal values such as fairness, equity, and justice. It’s essential that we administer labor justice promptly and impartially to create an environment where both workers and employers feel secure and empowered.

**Alex Enumah:** Thank you, Attorney-General, for sharing your insights. It’s evident that the NICN’s role extends beyond legal matters to nurturing a more robust and harmonious economic landscape in Nigeria.

Jury rules Silicon Valley staffing firm Cognizant discriminated against non-Indian employees_1

A recent jury verdict has found that Cognizant, a major provider of tech talent to companies in Silicon Valley and the wider Bay Area, intentionally discriminated against non-Indian employees. Reports from the Mercury News indicate that the jury identified ample evidence supporting the claims against the New Jersey-based firm, which originated in Chennai, India.

Cognizant has a heavy reliance on the H-1B visa program, which is designed to attract skilled workers, facilitating the influx of high-level talent into the tech sector. Many companies in Silicon Valley leverage this visa program for staffing, often turning to Cognizant and similar firms to fill lower-tier positions. Currently, the tech industry is actively lobbying to raise the annual cap on H-1B visas to over 85,000.

The lawsuit, filed in 2017 in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, was initiated by three American-born plaintiffs: Vartan Piroumian from California, Christy Palmer from Arizona, and Edward Cox from Texas. They were later joined by Jean-Claude Franchitti, a green card holder from France. The plaintiffs allege that Cognizant systematically marginalized non-Indian employees, leaving them without tasks until they were ultimately dismissed according to company policy.

In the wake of the ruling, Cognizant expressed disappointment on Monday and announced intentions to appeal the decision.

Ron Hira, a professor at Howard University who specializes in the H-1B visa program, pointed out that Cognizant processes hundreds of H-1B applications annually, allowing Indian nationals to work in the Bay Area. Data from 2023 shows that Cognizant has facilitated H-1B visas for major employers including Google, Meta, Apple, PG&E, Kaiser Permanente, and Walmart.

According to the Bay Area Council, nearly 60,000 foreign nationals with H-1B visas were authorized to work for regional companies in 2019, with a large majority from India.

The lawsuit alleges that Cognizant’s favoritism towards Indian workers drove the company to apply for as many visas as possible, including requests tied to fictitious job offers. Hira noted that H-1B regulations stipulate that companies must have legitimate job openings to support visa applications.

Franchitti, who earned a PhD in computer science, began his tenure at Cognizant in 2007. During his nine-year career as a director and executive, he noted a distinct bias favoring visa-holding Indian employees. He claimed he was terminated in 2016 after repeatedly raising concerns about being pressured to sign off on hundreds of fraudulent invitations designed to bolster H-1B visa applications for nonexistent jobs.

The lawsuit argues that these fraudulent invitations were part of a broader strategy by Cognizant to secure a large number of H-1B visas, effectively creating a “robust stock” of Indian nationals for placement in U.S. companies. The jury has recommended that the court impose punitive damages on Cognizant.

Ondo Flooding- Senate Decries Ondo Flooding, Demands NEMA’s Urgent Intervention

During a recent Senate session, discussions turned to the catastrophic flooding that has devastated Ondo town, sparking urgent calls for action. On Tuesday, the Senate urged the Ondo State Government to promptly assess the flood-affected areas, seeking to find lasting solutions to the persistent flooding issues that plague these communities.

Senators also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to swiftly deliver relief materials to those displaced by the flooding in Ondo West Local Government Area. Additionally, the Senate reached out to the Federal Ministry of Power, asking for the timely restoration of electricity by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to the impacted regions. There was a strong insistence that the federal government must develop a quick and effective response to such natural disasters.

These resolutions were prompted by a motion from Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, SAN, representing Ondo Central. Adegbonmire spoke passionately about the disaster, highlighting that severe rainfall on October 4, 2024, had impacted over 1,000 homes, 25 schools, and 20 places of worship, leaving more than 7,000 people homeless.

He described the extensive destruction across various communities in the Ondo Central Senatorial District, identifying areas including Itanla, Oka, Odojomu, Oke-Odunwo, among others, all part of Ondo West Local Government Area.

Adegbonmire expressed deep sorrow over the flooding’s effects, particularly on vulnerable populations such as women, children, and the elderly. “Some children have gone missing, and property worth millions has been lost,” he stated. “Residents are now homeless, with their houses and vehicles submerged.”

He articulated the severe challenges this disaster has posed to the most vulnerable community members, including children, the elderly, and small business owners. The senator underscored his profound concern for the impacts on shelter, security, food, medical care, and the overall economic stability of those affected.

“This situation, worsened by the tragic loss of lives and livelihoods, has further strained the already tough economic conditions for the victims,” Adegbonmire remarked. “I strongly believe that the government’s primary responsibility is to ensure the security and welfare of its citizens, as outlined in Section 14 (2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Immediate action is essential.”
