White paper- Automobile consumption-promoting policies have achieved remarkable results, and replacement and updating have become one of the mainstream needs

On October 20, 2024, the Wangfujing Forum kicked off in Beijing, and one of its subforums, titled “Automotive Consumption Development,” saw the release of the “2024 White Paper on Promoting Automotive Consumption and User Insights” by Dongchedi in collaboration with the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. The white paper highlights the significant impact of automotive consumption policies in 2024, noting that vehicle replacement and upgrades have emerged as one of the primary demands in the automotive market.

The white paper focuses on five key areas: policy research, consumer insights, corporate dynamics, expert opinions, and industry initiatives. It aims to assess the effectiveness of automotive consumption policies and provide recommendations for the development of the Chinese automotive industry.

Through a consumer survey conducted for the white paper, it was found that over half of the respondents believe that consumption vouchers significantly enhance their willingness to purchase a vehicle. Nearly one-third cited these vouchers as the direct catalyst for their buying decisions, while more than 75% indicated that purchasing subsidies play a strong role in boosting automotive consumption. Interestingly, only 20% of respondents reported having benefitted from purchase subsidies, indicating substantial room for growth in this area.

The subsidies have also spurred the replacement of older vehicles and increased the share of new energy vehicles (NEVs) on the market. The survey revealed that approximately 40% of those replacing older cars were trading in vehicles over ten years old, and over 60% of new purchases were for NEVs. When it comes to vehicle pricing, more than half of consumers are opting for cars in the 100,000 to 200,000 yuan range, demonstrating a shift from a “dumbbell” consumption structure to a “spindle” one.

Additionally, the white paper examines the experiences of consumers receiving subsidies. More than 80% of those who have accessed vehicle purchase subsidies believe that reducing the time it takes for subsidies to be deposited can enhance the effectiveness of these policies and accelerate the flow of subsidy funds, thereby increasing their appeal.

In terms of information sources about these policies, platforms such as Dongchedi and Douyin (TikTok) serve as major channels for consumers. On one hand, the diverse, short video formats significantly broaden the reach of policy communication, making more consumers aware of available benefits. On the other hand, automotive media platforms can precisely and efficiently target potential car buyers, improving the conversion rates of these policies.

Beyond consumer surveys, the white paper launched three initiatives focusing on “technological innovation, service innovation, and product innovation.” It calls on all participants in the automotive supply chain to inject new momentum into industry development through technological advancements and to foster collaboration to avoid unhealthy competition, ultimately providing consumers with high-quality and diverse purchasing services and automotive products.

Ding Yan, director of the automotive market division at the National Information Center, pointed out that under the influence of the old-for-new vehicle subsidy policy, new energy cars priced below 150,000 yuan have become a significant growth segment. However, he noted that price alone is not the primary concern for consumers; quality is becoming the dominant trend. Companies need to find a balance between sales volume and profit while recognizing that younger generations are increasingly accustomed to purchasing cars through both online and offline channels, with NEV users more inclined to share their experiences online.

Chen Shihua, deputy secretary-general of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, stated that the growth rate of vehicle production and sales in China is gradually slowing, and the fuel vehicle market continues to decline. However, new energy vehicles are experiencing rapid growth, with their market share reaching 54.6% in September. Furthermore, domestic brands are gaining traction, with a market share of 63.8% for passenger cars from January to September 2024, and NEVs capturing over 80% of the market.

Chen emphasized that as a ballast in maintaining steady growth in the industrial economy, automotive subsidy policies must continue to be promoted to alleviate inventory pressures and enhance profitability, thereby addressing the challenge of increasing output without corresponding profitability in the industry.

Li Xin, strategic leader at Dongchedi, noted that data shows consumers are extending their decision-making cycles, and government subsidies hold significant potential in encouraging spending among hesitant buyers. As of October 9, the platform had assisted 130,000 consumers with subsidy applications, driving automotive consumption above 23.2 billion yuan.

Experts including Wang Qing, deputy director of the Market Economy Research Institute at the Development Research Center of the State Council, and Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the Passenger Car Market Joint Conference, anticipate that new vehicle sales in China will maintain an average annual growth rate of around 2% over the next decade. As the automotive consumption market enters a period of slow growth, businesses should adopt digital marketing strategies to enhance operational efficiency and focus on long-term interests, pushing the automotive market toward high-quality development in line with the three key initiatives.

The first batch of migratory birds arrives in Guangdong. Guangdong migratory bird protection operation launches in 2024

As the migratory birds begin their journey south, the 2024 Guangdong Migratory Bird Protection Initiative was officially launched on October 22 at the Cuixiang National Wetland Park in Zhongshan.

The Guangdong Provincial Forestry Bureau reported that this initiative, which started in 2019, has become a key brand activity in bird protection within the province. It aims to unite various social organizations and volunteers, encouraging more individuals to participate in protecting migratory birds.

Guided by the Guangdong Provincial Forestry Bureau and organized by the Guangdong Provincial Forestry Affairs Center and the Zhongshan Natural Resources Bureau, the event was themed “A Meeting in Guangdong: The Joy of Feathered Moments.” Representatives from ten birdwatching organizations within Guangdong, along with birdwatching enthusiasts, volunteers, and members of the community, were invited to attend. The event featured case studies on migratory bird protection and included the reading of a bird protection advocacy letter. Honorary certificates were presented to bird-loving groups and volunteers, along with flags to symbolize their commitment.

As October progresses, familiar faces like the Black-faced Spoonbill, Black-tailed Godwit, Redshank, and Greenshank have begun to arrive in Shenzhen’s Futian. In Shantou, at the Han River Estuary, many rare and endangered bird species have also made an appearance, including the Chinese Crested Tern, Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Yellow-breasted Bunting, and the Great Egret. In Zhanjiang, numerous birds, such as Spoon-billed Sandpipers and Black-headed Gulls, have been spotted, while Haifeng in Shanwei welcomed nearly a hundred Crested Terns alongside other migratory birds like the Ivory Gull, Great Egret, Brown Shrike, and the Asian Brown Flycatcher.

With the arrival of cooler weather, the number of southbound migratory birds is expected to increase, creating a spectacular sight in southern Guangdong, often referred to as a “paradise for migratory birds.” Forestry departments across Guangdong will collaborate with local bird protection groups to implement a series of initiatives aimed at safeguarding migratory birds and their habitats.

As a significant region for migratory bird resources, Guangdong has adopted various measures, issuing multiple policy documents and collaborating with provinces to launch cross-regional protection actions for migratory bird corridors. Multi-department partnerships have helped establish a robust system for the protection and enforcement related to wild bird species.

According to a representative from the Guangdong Provincial Forestry Bureau, the province currently records 584 species of wild birds, including 412 migratory species. In recent years, the populations of wild birds have shown signs of recovery and growth. Guangdong plans to continue enhancing its migratory bird conservation efforts, focusing on biodiversity protection, bird banding stations, and disease monitoring, while strategically carrying out protective work for rare and endangered migratory birds.

New York magazine reporter lost her job after having an affair with Kennedy Jr.

Olivia Nuzzi, the Washington correspondent for New York Magazine, recently acknowledged her “personal relationship” with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the interview subject, after taking a month-long leave from the publication. Upon her return, she agreed to part ways with the magazine.

This past September, Nuzzi’s unusual connection with Kennedy, who was running for president at the time, came to light. In response, New York Magazine reviewed all of her election-related reports and found no issues of inaccuracy or bias. They subsequently enlisted the law firm Davis Wright Tremaine for a more thorough examination, which resulted in the same conclusion.

Nonetheless, both the magazine and Nuzzi felt that the best course of action was to go their separate ways. New York Magazine expressed pride in Nuzzi’s work over her eight years as a Washington correspondent, calling her a “talented writer” and wishing her well in her future endeavors.

Ari Wilkenfeld, Nuzzi’s attorney, stated that both investigations concluded her reports were thorough. Nuzzi felt content, though not surprised, asserting that she had “done nothing wrong.” Wilkenfeld added that her reporting has been well-received and praised during her tenure at the magazine. Nuzzi expressed deep gratitude to her colleagues and readers and is now looking forward to a new chapter in her career.

At just 31 years old, Nuzzi emerged as one of the most prolific political reporters during the Trump administration. Her extensive network allows her to deliver timely and impactful reporting, which has garnered criticism from both the left and right. One of her notable pieces published on July 4, described President Biden as a “sleepy driver” holding the steering wheel but struggling to stay awake. This portrayal drew sharp backlash from Biden’s supporters, but just weeks later, Biden announced his decision to not run for re-election.

Following the controversy in September, Nuzzi admitted to having a “personal” but not “physical” relationship with Kennedy. A spokesperson for Kennedy stated that the two had only met once, during the interview. In light of potential conflicts of interest, New York Magazine published an apology to its readers, acknowledging that the situation undermined the trust between the publication and its audience.

The situation also brought Nuzzi’s former fiancé, Ryan Lizza, a Politico correspondent, into the spotlight. Nuzzi obtained a restraining order against Lizza on October 1, prohibiting him from coming near her.

Shanghai- Winter supplement -paste- has become the -new favorite- of young people for health care

On October 23rd, in Shanghai, a reporter spoke with traditional Chinese medicine practitioners about the growing trend of herbal pastes, or “gāofāng,” as a means of boosting health during the colder months.

Dr. Jin Muli, a physician at a local herbal medicine shop, explained that the saying “Three nines for a winter, fewer ailments come next year” emphasizes the importance of winter supplements. With the fast-paced nature of modern life, many residents experience symptoms like cold hands and feet or frequent illnesses as they enter autumn and winter. He noted that winter is an ideal time for the body to conserve energy and enhance vitality, making it the perfect season to consume herbal pastes.

“Winter is the ‘storing’ season according to traditional Chinese medicine. It’s a time for nourishing the body to prepare for the energy demanded by the upcoming year,” Dr. Zhang Yiqun shared during the interview. He elaborated that people who could benefit from gāofāng include those with chronic illnesses, individuals in sub-optimal health, the elderly, women and children with weaker constitutions, and patients recovering from illness.

Mr. Pei, a local citizen, shared his personal experience with gāofāng. “A few years ago, I started taking herbal paste on the recommendation of a friend. It worked wonders for me, so this year I came back for more,” he said, mentioning that he traveled nearly half an hour on a bus from Pudong to purchase gāofāng for his mother, who is in her 80s and regularly takes it each winter for health maintenance.

The preparation of gāofāng is meticulous, often taking about a day for a single portion. The key process of brewing involves at least eight hours of careful attention from a master herbalist. Fang Jie, an inheritor of Shanghai’s intangible cultural heritage in gāofāng preparation, detailed how their shop customizes formulas based on individual needs. Unlike typical herbal pastes, their products contain a higher ratio of herbs, resulting in a lighter texture that is economically viable for those aiming to improve their health.

As the concept of winter health supplementation gains traction, an increasing number of young people are also embracing this traditional practice. Dr. Zhang observed, “The proportion of younger individuals seeking gāofāng has been rising. They tend to be more informed and proactive about their health, often discussing their conditions and goals with us. They also emphasize taste and portability, preferring gāofāng products that are easy to carry and enjoyable to consume.”

Dr. Jin advised that while taking gāofāng, it’s generally best to avoid strong teas, coffee, and spicy foods, as these can counteract the effects of the herbal paste. Additionally, if gāofāng contains ginseng, it’s recommended to avoid consuming radishes, as they can diminish its efficacy.

Wang Wei- Sanxingdui Bronze Civilization does not exist in isolation and is closely connected with the Central Plains Civilization

During the 2024 Tianfu Book Fair held from October 11 to 14 in Chengdu, renowned archaeologist Wang Wei, a member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, took center stage to discuss his latest work, “Tracing the Origins of Chinese Civilization,” and address some of the most pressing questions regarding the Sanxingdui site.

Wang Wei shared insights into the development of the Sanxingdui civilization, revealing that human activity in the area dates back approximately 4,300 years. However, he emphasized that the peak of its bronze civilization emerged around 3,400 to 3,200 years ago, coinciding with the Xia and Shang dynasties in central China. He made it clear that Sanxingdui’s bronze culture was not an isolated phenomenon but rather closely connected to central plains civilization. For instance, jade artifacts such as jade axes, knives, and ceremonial pieces found at Sanxingdui first appeared in the late Xia dynasty in central China before spreading to the region. Additionally, he noted that the bronze-making techniques employed at Sanxingdui were derived from the early Shang dynasty and reached new heights thanks to local artisans’ innovations. In response to inquiries about the presence of unique lead in Sanxingdui copper artifacts, Wang explained that this specific type of lead had already been discovered at the Yin ruins, indicating that it is not exclusive to Sanxingdui.

Wang Wei acknowledged the allure of the Sanxingdui site, which has sparked numerous speculations about its origins and characteristics. However, as a deeply engaged archaeologist in the excavation and research of Sanxingdui, he believes that many of these theories lack scientific support and require objective analysis from an archaeological perspective.

At the event, Wang Wei also introduced “Tracing the Origins of Chinese Civilization.” The book features a distinguished lineup of authors, including Liu Qingzhu, former director of the Institute of Archaeology at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Zhao Hui, chief expert of the “Chinese Civilization Exploration Project” and professor at Peking University’s School of Archaeology and Museology, and Han Jianye, a professor at Renmin University’s History Department and a distinguished scholar under the Ministry of Education’s “Changjiang Scholars Program.” All four authors are actively involved in the “Chinese Civilization Exploration Project” and have taken on key roles in its initiatives.

Published by Beijing United Publishing Company and distributed by Beijing Huajing Times Cultural Media Co., Ltd., “Tracing the Origins of Chinese Civilization” distinctly utilizes archaeology to explore the roots of Chinese civilization. The book systematically details the historical trajectory of Chinese civilization’s origins, formation, and development, providing evidence for the uninterrupted continuity of over 5,000 years of Chinese culture. It also elaborates on the overarching characteristics of Chinese civilization, which are marked by “diversity and unity, inclusiveness, and continuity.” Furthermore, the work assesses the research of global scholars on world and Chinese civilizations, engaging in in-depth comparative studies to offer a broader temporal and spatial interpretation of Chinese heritage.

Zhuang drama -Baise Uprising- staged in Nanning, inspiring patriotic enthusiasm

On the evening of October 21, the Zhuang opera “The Baise Uprising” was performed at the Guangxi Cultural Art Center, allowing audiences to relive a remarkable chapter in history and remember the selfless dedication of revolutionary figures who fought for the country and its people.

Drawing inspiration from the Baise Uprising that took place in Guangxi during 1929, the opera features iconic personas such as Deng Xiaoping, Li Mingrui, and Wei Baqun. Using the unique style of Guangxi Zhuang opera, the performance incorporates local dialect singing, celebrating the contributions of the Zhuang people to the revolutionary cause. It tells the moving stories of those revolutionary forebears who remained steadfast in their ideals and selflessly dedicated themselves to their mission.

Young actor Mo Fenghua, who plays Deng Xiaoping, shared insights on performing historical themes. “When portraying historical subjects, we can fully utilize the passionate melodies and distinctive dance movements of Zhuang opera to convey the grand scenes of history and the noble aspirations of its characters,” he stated. He described “The Baise Uprising” as a fusion of ethnic culture and revolutionary themes, illustrating how life changed for the people after the victory of “armed rural-urban territorial divisions.” Through the opera’s unique performance style, the audience can feel the power of red culture.

Pan Lijun, a theater enthusiast from Nanning, attended the show with friends and expressed her passion for historical dramas. “The story of ‘The Baise Uprising’ resonates closely with local audiences. Revolutionary historical plays can awaken the inherent spirit of resilience in Chinese people, allowing us to inherit the red spirit and savor the emotions tied to the revolution.”

According to the Guangxi Drama Theater, the creative team began by visiting locations such as Baise City and Tiandong County to gather extensive material during the initial stages of developing “The Baise Uprising.” They studied historical documents and relevant artistic works to accurately capture the tone of the production. The segments featuring “gathering of heroes” and “heroes mourning heroes” represent a fresh exploration of red-themed storytelling.

Discussing his role, Mo Fenghua emphasized the importance of immersing oneself in history to understand the character’s thoughts, personalities, and behavioral logic. “Actors must grasp the historical context and the character’s traits to effectively embody their roles and convey the revolutionary spirit through music, stage design, and interactions with co-actors,” he explained.

Mo Fenghua believes that historical dramas inspire a sense of patriotism and responsibility among young people, encouraging them to learn about history, remember it, and carry forward cultural values.

“The Baise Uprising,” produced by the Guangxi Drama Theater, is part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s initiative to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of China, and has been recognized as a key supported project within the “100 Years, 100 Works” creative plan. The production has previously won awards such as the Best Drama and Best Director awards at the Sixth National Minority Art Festival, along with the Guangxi Cultural Creation Bronze Drum Award and the Guangxi “Five One Project” Excellent Work Award.
