Kentuckian woman suspected of dismembering her mother at home, with a pot of human remains in the oven_1

In an unsettling case out of Mount Olivet, Kentucky, 32-year-old Torilena May Fields is alleged to have dismembered her mother in the backyard of her home. After her arrest, authorities discovered human remains in a pot inside the oven.

According to reports from the Associated Press, police received a call on October 9 about dismembered body parts found on the grass in the backyard. When officers arrived with a search warrant, Fields refused to open the door, prompting them to deploy tear gas and use a police robot to communicate with her. Eventually, she was convinced to exit the residence peacefully, avoiding a more forceful intervention.

Witnesses noted that Fields appeared with blood on her face, hands, and clothes. In addition to the body parts found outside, police confirmed the discovery of human remains within a pot in the oven, although it has not been disclosed whether the remains had been cooked. A male caller reported that the deceased is believed to be Fields’ mother, Trudy, suggesting that Fields may have been struggling with substance abuse issues leading up to this tragic event.

North Korea’s multi-angle footage of road bombings exposed, the power of the blasts is shocking, and the road sign in the same frame satirizes- walk slowly

On October 15, tensions between North and South Korea heightened as North Korea began demolishing the road connections between the two countries, specifically the Gyeongui Line and the Donghae Line. In response, the South Korean military fired back across the Military Demarcation Line (MDL). A South Korean Facebook fan page released footage captured from multiple angles, showcasing the explosive demolition.

According to YTN News, the video reveals North Korean soldiers standing behind a black partition, preparing to detonate the Gyeongui Line road. At the moment of the explosion, thick plumes of black smoke and dust surged into the sky, with the camera visibly shaking from the blast’s force.

A blue road sign nearby, displaying “Goodbye” and “안녕히 가십시오” (meaning “please go safely” in Korean), ironically contrasted with the ongoing demolition operations.

The footage also shows heavy machinery, including excavators and large trucks, arriving on the scene to assist with the destruction efforts. The video captured multiple perspectives of the explosive event.

The Gyeongui Line stretches 499 kilometers, starting from Seoul Station and passing through areas like Goyang and Paju before reaching North Korean cities such as Kaesong, Pyongyang, and Sinuiju. This railway was first opened by Japan in 1906. The Donghae Line, also known as the Northern East Sea Line, was established in 1937, linking Sangju and Wonsan, and covering a total length of 180 kilometers.

Despite these railroads being situated within North Korean territory, they were constructed with 1.768 trillion Korean won borrowed from South Korea.

Jokowi’s curtain call- From Solo, to Solo

In a recent interview, former Indonesian President Joko Widodo reflected on his decade-long journey in office as he bids farewell to his presidency on October 20. “I entrusted the dreams and hopes of 280 million Indonesians to Prabowo,” he stated, as he handed over his responsibilities to his successor.

On that afternoon, Joko and his wife returned to his hometown of Solo, marking a return to his roots. He waved goodbye to crowds along the way, with some supporters shouting, “Thank you, Mr. Joko!”

Described as the “people’s president,” Joko was born 63 years ago into a carpenter’s family in the riverside city of Solo, Central Java. Reports indicate that his academic performance was unremarkable, graduating from a local university’s forestry program. He has had various jobs, including working as an office employee, selling furniture, and running a company.

Joko entered politics in 2005, becoming the mayor of Solo. He famously refused to take a salary during his time as mayor, instead directing his earnings towards helping the impoverished through his secretary. Known for his approachable demeanor and lack of bureaucratic airs, he maintained this style even as he rose through the political ranks.

In 2012, Joko moved on from his hometown to win the gubernatorial election in Jakarta. This victory set the stage for his successful presidential campaign in 2014, completing a remarkable leap from mayor to president. He was re-elected in 2019.

Throughout his presidency, Joko made a point of visiting villages, communities, and local markets, frequently soliciting public feedback. He was known to roll up his sleeves and assist farmers with rice planting, earning him the affectionate title of “people’s president.”

Over the last ten years, Joko established a significant legacy in Southeast Asia’s largest economy. In his final state of the nation address, he highlighted achievements such as large-scale infrastructure projects that notably improved Indonesia’s global competitiveness and enhanced the welfare of its citizens. Despite global economic slowdowns, Indonesia maintained a growth rate of around 5%.

Notably, the opening of the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway marked a significant milestone during his administration. Joko also set in motion plans to relocate the nation’s capital to Nusantara.

Recent polls indicate that 75% of the populace expressed satisfaction with his governance. However, he has faced criticisms over certain policies and governance issues, admitting, “I am far from a perfect person.”

Interestingly, Joko fostered a unique political environment, transforming rivals into allies. His main opponent in the last two elections, Prabowo, was appointed as Minister of Defense, while his vice-presidential adversary, Sandiaga Uno, assumed the role of Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy. This ability to bridge divides has become a celebrated narrative in Indonesian politics.

“As I prepare for retirement, I’ve been saying goodbye,” Joko shared. Over the months, he made similar remarks across various regions, from East Nusa Tenggara to North Sumatra and East Java to West Kalimantan. Just two days before stepping down, he announced to his cabinet that he would be returning to Solo, inviting everyone to visit.

This desire to return to a simpler life isn’t surprising; Joko has frequently expressed his longing for rural life and family ties. Solo, his hometown, is where his loved ones and childhood friends reside. Just last weekend, he revisited his old elementary school to relive his childhood memories.

Joko’s journey, from Solo to the presidency and back to Solo, resembles a full-circle journey, closing a legendary chapter as the “people’s president” returns to his humble beginnings.

Drone attack on Israel puts spotlight on Iron Dome’s limitations

Reuters Large crowds gathered at funeral of Israeli soldier Sergeant Amitai Alon. Family members lean on his coffin crying with Israeli soldiers standing guard in front of it.ReutersSunday's drone attack was one of Israel's biggest in more than a year – four Israeli soldiers were killedSlow, small and relatively cheap to make, drones have become a deadly headache for Israelis in this year-long war.
Hezbollah’s attack on an army base near Binyamina in northern Israel on Sunday, which killed four men and injured dozens more, was the most damaging drone strike on the country to date.
It’s led to fresh questions about how well equipped Israel’s hugely expensive air defence system is to stop them.
Visiting the damaged army base on Monday morning, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said “significant efforts” were being put into solutions that would prevent future drone attacks.

Here in northern Israel we hear booms at regular intervals as the Iron Dome intercepts rockets that Hezbollah fires from southern Lebanon. Israel says it hits more than 90% of its targets.
But the Iron Dome works because Hezbollah’s rockets are crude – and it’s possible to calculate where its rockets will go at take-off and then intercept them.
Stopping drones is more complicated. And has in this war become a recurring problem.
A graphic that shows how Israel's Iron Dome defence system works. It shows the order in which a missile is shot down from an enemy rocket being fired, a radar system detecting and tracking the rocket, a control system that estimates the impact point and a launcher firing a missile to intercept. In July a drone fired by Yemen’s Houthis reached Tel Aviv. Earlier in October the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said a drone launched from Iraq killed two soldiers in the Golan Heights. Just last week another drone hit a nursing home in central Israel.
“Most, if not all, of the drones are manufactured by the Iranians and then supplied to the armed groups in Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen,” Dr Yehoshua Kalisky, senior researcher of the Institute of National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, told the BBC.
Drones have a small radar signature and can fly at low altitudes which makes early detection difficult. They can even occasionally be confused for birds.
“They’re also difficult to intercept with aircraft because the UAVs (drones) fly slowly,” Dr Kalisky explained. “They’re going about 200km/h (124mph) compared to 900km/h (559mph) of a jet plane.”
Reuters Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepts rockets in the dark skies over the city of AshkelonReutersIsrael's Iron Dome can effectively target Hezbollah rockets – but stopping drones is more complicatedIsraeli media reports suggest that on Sunday two Hezbollah drones, most likely Ziyad 107s, crossed from Lebanese air space above the Mediterranean. One was shot down and the other disappeared – presumed crashed – so no warning siren was triggered. It then went on to hit the canteen of an army base.
But Sarit Zehani from the Alma Research Institute – which specialises in security on the northern border – does not think it was luck that the drones got through.
“It was planned,” she said. “They’ve been trying to do this for a long time.”
Ms Zehani lives 9km from the Lebanese border in western Galilee and saw Sunday’s events unfold from her balcony. She said there was rocket fire and alerts all across the border area as the drones were launched, “overwhelming” the air defence system and helping the drones to get through.
The Alma Research Institute has counted 559 incidents of drones crossing the northern border for surveillance or attack missions since the war began a year ago. Excluding Sunday’s attack on Binyamina, it says there have been 11 casualties from drone attacks.
In addition to the Iron Dome, systems such as David's Sling, Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 are designed to destroy ballistic missiles. And they will soon be bolstered by the arrival of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (Thaad) battery from the United States which will be operated by nearly 100 US military personnel.
More permanent solutions to take down drones are currently being developed.
“High powered lasers are being worked on and the other technology is using microwave cannons to burn the drone electronics,” Dr Kalisky said.
She says these technologies should be "available in the very near future”.

Iron Dome has a distance range of 70km, Thaad of up to 200km, David's Sling of up to 300km and Arrow System of up to 2,400 km. Below is a illustration that shows the missile altitude of each with Thaad reaching 150km, the Arrow System 100km, David's Sling up to 15km and the Iron Dome up to 10km.

Southern California 7-Eleven store was robbed by -flash mob-, store owner supports Proposition 36 to strengthen the fight against crime

Recently, 7-Eleven convenience stores in Southern California have become frequent targets of “flash robbery” crimes, drawing significant attention from the community. In response to this growing trend, some 7-Eleven franchise owners are backing Proposal 36, which will be voted on in November, to classify these crimes as felonies.

On Thursday, 7-Eleven franchise owners announced at a press conference their contribution of $1 million to the campaign supporting Proposal 36. According to the official voter information guide, Proposal 36 would allow certain drug possession offenses and thefts of items valued at less than $950 to be classified as felonies, provided the defendant has a history of two or more prior drug or theft convictions.

If Proposal 36 is passed, individuals convicted of certain drug offenses and thefts could face harsher penalties, including longer prison sentences. In some cases, those caught with illegal drugs may be required to undergo rehabilitation or face a maximum of three years in prison.

Voting “no” would mean maintaining the current penalties for drug and theft offenses.

Arcadia Mayor Michael Cao attended the press conference and publicly expressed his support for Proposal 36, stating that it is crucial for community safety.

Former Arcadia Mayor and current city council member Paul Cheng also voiced strong support for the proposal. He noted, “We must take a firm stance against the escalating crime within our community. Proposal 36 provides us with stronger legal tools to hold repeat offenders accountable and protect our businesses and residents. As a member of the Arcadia City Council, I wholeheartedly support any measures that can effectively reduce crime and ensure the safety of our community. We cannot allow criminal activities to go unpunished; we must create a safer living environment for our next generation.”

Debbie Thomas, a representative from the Los Angeles Police Protective League, added, “As law enforcement officers, we have seen firsthand the serious impacts these crimes have on store owners, the public, and our own officers.”

Proposal 36 has now become a focal point of discourse in several Southern California communities, with voters set to make their final decision in the upcoming November elections.

Jingdezhen Ming Dynasty gourd kiln re-fired for the first time this year

During the 2024 China Jingdezhen International Ceramic Expo, a significant event took place on October 19th at the ancient kiln folk customs exhibition area in Jingdezhen, a city renowned as the “Porcelain Capital of the World.” The Ming Dynasty Hulu kiln, which boasts a history of over 600 years, was reignited for the first time this year.

I interviewed Feng Heping, a representative inheritor of the traditional porcelain firing techniques in Jingdezhen. He explained that this revival marks the first firing of the Hulu kiln in the Year of the Dragon. “We have loaded 1,500 pieces of porcelain into the kiln, featuring various techniques including high-temperature colored glazes, blue-and-white underglaze red, and tea powder glazes,” Feng noted. He further shared that after continuous stoking for 24 hours, the kiln will be allowed to cool naturally for another 24 hours, with an official opening expected on the 21st.

In a separate conversation, Hu Jiawang, an inheritor of the traditional kiln workshop construction techniques, expressed his hopes for the Hulu kiln’s revival. “We aim to restore the changes in kilns over the past millennium and promote a deeper understanding of Jingdezhen’s kiln and porcelain culture,” he stated. Hu emphasized the historical significance of Hulu kiln-fired porcelain, which contributed greatly to China’s ceramic exports over 600 years ago, and he hopes to pass this legacy down through generations.

Before the firing ceremony, a solemn ritual honoring the kiln god took place at Tongbin Square in the ancient kiln folk customs exhibition area. One visitor, Yang Wei, traveled from Shanghai with friends to witness the event. “I’ve always heard that if you want to understand Chinese culture, you must look at ceramics, and if you want to understand ceramic culture, you should look to Jingdezhen,” Yang remarked. “Experiencing this traditional kiln firing up close was truly impressive. It really underscores the importance of having a deep respect for this craft.”

Since 2009, Jingdezhen’s ancient kilns have embraced the motto, “Millennia of porcelain kilns cultivate the thousand-year porcelain capital; a series of revivals showcase Chinese civilization.” Over the past decade, initiatives to reconstruct and reignite traditional wood-fired kilns have breathed new life into the historical art of porcelain making in the region.

Traditional Chinese medicine night market is popular and attracts young fans

In recent weeks, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) night markets have been gaining popularity in cities like Beijing, featuring services such as consultations, prescriptions, acupuncture, massage, wellness, health care, dietary advice, and cultural promotion—drawing a significant number of young people. The experience of taking a pulse, trying acupuncture, purchasing herbal sachets, or sipping on medicinal tea has become an appealing option for the nightlife of younger generations.

Dr. Jiao Zhihong, the head of the TCM specialty outpatient clinic at Fengtai Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital in Beijing, noted, “Each day, we see over 200 patients, more than half of whom are young people.” He explained that many young adults, busy with work during the day, seek to understand their health status, which leads them to the night market for consultation.

However, Dr. Jiao cautions that many of these young visitors are dealing with issues stemming from late nights and irregular diets, emphasizing the need to prioritize better sleep habits.

A Bustling Holiday Experience

On the last day of China’s National Day holiday, the TCM night market opened at Jingshun TCM Hall in Shunyi, organized by the district’s health committee and Beijing Jingshun Hospital. Despite being the holiday’s final night, the market retained its popularity.

By 6 PM on October 9th, crowds had begun to swell. The market featured various activity zones, including herbal teas, ingredient identification, free medical consultations, TCM education, and hands-on experiences, all attracting long lines of eager participants, many of whom were young.

Among the highlights was the herbal milk tea stall, which ran out long before the market closed. The nearby Ejiao booth was equally busy, with staff reporting that all of the samples they prepared for the first day had been consumed, and even more people came for free tastings in the following days.

In the free consultation area, traditional therapies such as moxibustion, massage, and auricular acupressure were demonstrated. TCM experts from institutions such as the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences provided on-site consultations, answering health questions and offering personalized wellness advice.

Post-90s participant Xiaosai learned about the TCM night market through social media and decided to bring his girlfriend. “We came with a playful mindset, and since my girlfriend is interested in wellness, we wanted to experience taking a pulse and massage,” he shared.

Xiaozhang, another post-00 participant from Chaoyang District, took an hour-long subway ride to the market. He found the night market more interactive compared to traditional clinics, saying, “In summary, it’s a place to taste, observe, and engage. It’s also a great opportunity to enhance health knowledge.”

As the night market approached closing time at 9 PM, it remained vibrant and bustling, with long queues at various stalls. Despite staff announcements that it was time to wrap up, many attendees lingered, reluctant to leave.

A Nationwide Trend

The TCM night market in Beijing is not unique; other provinces and cities have also hosted similar events this summer, showcasing a diverse array of services and activities, organized by local health committees and TCM hospitals.

These markets have proven to be incredibly popular. In Hefei, for instance, in addition to consultations, over twenty stalls filled the square, where promotional videos of traditional exercises like Ba Duan Jin and Wu Qin Xi played on large screens, drawing crowds eager to participate.

In Nanyang, earlier editions of the night market included activities like traditional soccer and toss-the-pot games, alongside lectures on identifying herbs, where young attendees enjoyed health-promoting sour plum drinks while learning about TCM.

In Shenyang, a night market organized by Liaoning Traditional Chinese Medicine University attracted such large numbers that it had to be relocated to a larger venue. Zhao Rui, a post-95 participant, found the crowds overwhelming and opted to explore the acupuncture area instead, purchasing some health products afterward.

Increasingly, nights dedicated to TCM are appealing to young people, who see it as an opportunity to learn about traditional practices in a lively setting, where they can experience therapies that address stress and health issues exacerbated by modern lifestyles.

A Unique and Accessible Experience

Dr. Li, a TCM practitioner in Ili, Xinjiang, is part of a family with seven generations of TCM experience. Invited by the local health committee to participate, she noted that the night market operates later, from 10 PM to midnight. Dr. Li highlighted the popularity of herbal sachets, especially those targeting sleep issues and stress relief among both older adults and young people.

Dr. Jiao from Fengtai also provided consultations at another festival event designed to promote TCM, indicating that many young attendees share similar health concerns related to irregular eating habits and high stress. He encourages young people to maintain a balanced routine, exercise regularly, and adopt practices like Ba Duan Jin and Wu Qin Xi for overall wellness. He also recommends that attendees follow up with formal medical care if necessary.

Despite the late hours, many young visitors express appreciation for having an accessible and engaging avenue to learn about and benefit from TCM practices. As young people increasingly gravitate towards these night markets, there’s a widespread acknowledgment that they serve as a unique platform to integrate traditional medicine into everyday life while addressing modern health challenges.

As the trend continues to gain traction, various themed night markets are beginning to incorporate TCM elements, indicating a growing enthusiasm for these traditional practices among the younger demographic.

Israel says it killed Hamas leader Sinwar

On October 17, a senior Israeli official announced that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, was killed by Israeli forces.

Earlier that day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israeli Security Agency (Shin Bet) released a joint statement indicating that preliminary reports confirmed the IDF had killed three Palestinian militants during military operations in the Gaza Strip. They also stated that they were verifying whether one of the deceased was indeed Yahya Sinwar.

Sinwar took over as the leader of Hamas’s political bureau in August of this year. He is one of the principal founders of the security wing within Hamas and has been in charge of the organization’s operations in Gaza since 2017. Israel regards him as one of the masterminds behind the October 7 attacks on Israel carried out by Hamas last year.

In 1988, Sinwar was convicted by Israel for the suspected killing of two Israeli soldiers and served more than 20 years in prison. He was released in 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas. Since becoming the leader of Hamas in Gaza in 2017, he has rarely been seen in public, gaining a reputation for his hardline approach.

On August 6 of this year, Hamas announced Sinwar’s appointment as the leader of its political bureau, succeeding Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Iran on July 31. (Reported by Wei Ran, CGTN)

(Visiting the Countryside·Looking at Revitalization) Pengze, Jiangxi- Fishing and people are busy fishing in autumn

As autumn settles in, the annual fishing season arrives in Huangling Township, Pengze County, located in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province. Here, fish farmers swiftly lift nets and haul in their catch while the shimmering lake reflects clear waters. The atmosphere is filled with joy and celebration as fish leap and people cheer in this bountiful harvest.

At the Zhongyu Aquaculture Base in Huangling Township, as the nets are pulled tighter, fish jump energetically, splashing about. Once the catch is brought ashore, workers quickly sort, weigh, and transport the fish, with eager buyers waiting nearby.

“This year, the fish are notably larger and more abundant,” said Liao Xianliang, a dealer who travels from Jiangsu. “I’ve been purchasing here in Pengze for several years, usually around 500,000 pounds every season.” He praised the area’s water quality, noting that it results in delicious fish that are highly sought after in the market.

The Zhongyu Aquaculture Base spans 800 acres, with a network of waterways connecting lakes and rivers. This environment supports the growth of fresh, high-quality fish, which are distributed to cities such as Guangdong, Wuhan, Zhejiang, and Shanghai.

Watching as crates of fish are loaded onto trucks, Tao Yu, the head of Zhongyu Aquaculture Company, shared his insights: “Based on current trends, we anticipate a total production of around 800,000 pounds this year, with pure profits reaching approximately 1.5 million yuan.”

In recent years, Pengze County has adhered to the principle of “ecology first, green development,” implementing an ecologically-friendly aquaculture model known as “nature-based fishing.” This includes strict regulations like the “lake chief system” and ongoing “lake cleaning” initiatives to control pollution sources. These efforts ensure that the fish products maintain green, organic, and healthy qualities, achieving the dual goals of enhancing water quality while boosting economic benefits.

Shan Jixiang talks about -Culture and City- in Jingdezhen- Cultural heritage promotes cultural tourism development

On October 18th, during an event in Jingdezhen, the “Porcelain Capital” of China, former Director of the Palace Museum and Chair of its Academic Committee, Shan Jixiang, shared his insights on the intersection of culture and urban development. “By preserving the historical buildings and traditional residences near Longzhugao, we’re inviting long-time residents back to engage in the time-honored practices of ceramic research, production, and the sale of creative ceramic products, transforming this area into a vibrant historical district,” he said.

Shan spoke at the 2024 Jingdezhen Forum, an important event as part of the upcoming International Ceramic Expo in Jingdezhen. He highlighted that the Palace Museum houses over 360,000 pieces of ceramics, with 90% originating from the imperial kiln in Jingdezhen. In ancient times, many fine ceramics were sent to the Forbidden City exclusively for the royal family, while lesser pieces were destroyed in Jingdezhen. Today, however, the Palace Museum has evolved into a cultural institution, and remnants of Jingdezhen’s past are being uncovered through archaeological efforts, providing an opportunity for them to be displayed together once again.

Reflecting on his own involvement in archaeological surveys in Jingdezhen, Shan noted the significant developments in the city over the years, saying, “Every visit fills me with encouragement.” He emphasized the importance of the region’s state-owned ceramic factories as key players in the cultural tourism and heritage protection initiatives.

“Although the industrial production landscapes of the past may no longer exist, the cultural memories associated with them remain. The glorious achievements of the ceramic industry compel us to protect this legacy,” he asserted.

Shan also expressed enthusiasm for the ceramic markets, stating, “People are eager to experience the vibrant atmosphere of Jingdezhen’s ceramic markets. I’ve personally drawn inspiration from my visits here, sparking new ideas for developing cultural and creative products.” He noted that the Creative Street of Taoxi River, which evolved from the Jingdezhen Universe Ceramic Factory, has become a hub for young people from around the world, engaging in meaningful learning and cultural exchange, thus leading a new trend in industrial heritage preservation and creative park development across the country.
