Police investigating family dispute accidentally uncover illegal marijuana growing house_1

On October 8, the 61st precinct of the Brooklyn Police and the New York City Sheriff’s Office conducted a significant operation against an illegal marijuana distribution center located in a residential building across from a daycare center in Manhattan Beach. Authorities discovered professional growing equipment inside the rental property, suggesting that the residents had converted the residence into a distribution hub.

According to the police overseeing the case, they initially responded to a report of a potential domestic disturbance on Exeter Street. Upon investigation of the rental home, they uncovered a large quantity of illegally cultivated marijuana. Following this, the police collaborated with the Sheriff’s Office to investigate further, leading to the seizure of 90 plants and 100 pounds of marijuana products. Sheriff Anthony Miranda noted that it was clear the location functioned as both a growing and distribution center, with all sales taking place within the house. The suspect had installed industrial-grade lighting to support three rows of 30 plants, and the walls were lined with chemical materials prepared for processing and packaging marijuana. The interior included a nursery, a refrigerator, and a dedicated processing area. Reports indicated that it took authorities an entire day to remove all marijuana products and plants from the property.

The precinct confirmed that there were no children present in the marijuana-growing operation and that one man in his 30s has been arrested. The investigation is ongoing, and police have ruled out the landlord’s involvement, stating that the Fire Department would need to intervene to ensure the property’s safety.

Local residents expressed their surprise at the discovery, noting that the community has always felt safe and is home to many families. However, some residents mentioned having previously detected the smell of marijuana in the area, indicating that they were not entirely surprised by the news coverage.

Since the legalization of recreational marijuana in New York, the state has been more cautious in issuing sales licenses, significantly slowing down the process. Following the launch of “Operation Padlock to Protect” in May, authorities have become more proactive, conducting raids that have led to the closure of approximately a quarter of all marijuana shops in the city, resulting in the seizure of four tons of illegal marijuana products.

Nobel Prize winners one after another affirm that AI cannot help scholars and there is no chance-

In early October, the Nobel Prize in Physics and Chemistry were awarded to scientists in Northern California who have leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) in their research. This recognition has sparked a conversation about whether scientists lacking access to AI tools will struggle to compete in the future.

On October 8, AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton learned that he had received the Nobel Prize in Physics, and he celebrated by driving a rental car to Google’s headquarters in California. Although Hinton is no longer employed by Google, his impromptu celebration underscores the emergence of AI as a “commercial powerhouse,” reaching a significant milestone in the scientific community.

The following morning, two employees from Google’s AI division were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work in predicting and designing novel proteins. Jeanette Wing, a professor of computer science at Columbia University, stated, “This demonstrates the power of computer science and artificial intelligence.” When asked about the historical significance of AI winning back-to-back prestigious awards, Hinton simply remarked, “Neural networks are the future.”

Wing emphasized that such discoveries and capabilities would not have been possible without significant computational power and vast amounts of data. “Very few companies possess this kind of computational capacity; Google is one of them, and Microsoft is another.” This raises the question: Will scientists without the resources of major tech companies find themselves at a disadvantage?

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper from Google’s DeepMind lab in London, alongside researcher David Baker from the University of Washington. Their work has significantly contributed to the invention of new drugs. Google acquired DeepMind in 2014.

Hassabis shared in an interview with the Associated Press that he dreams of establishing his own research lab inspired by the “incredible legendary history” of Bell Labs.

However, Hinton doesn’t fully endorse the current trajectory of AI advancements. During the celebration at Google, he expressed criticism towards AI giant OpenAI. He noted, “OpenAI initially claimed that its main goal was to develop better general AI than humans and ensure its safety. However, over time, it has become apparent that Sam Altman is more concerned with profits than safety, which I believe is unfortunate.”

U.S. Defense Secretary- U.S. military dispatches B-2 bombers to attack Houthi armed forces in Yemen

On October 16, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin made a statement confirming that U.S. military forces utilized B-2 Spirit stealth bombers to carry out precise strikes against five underground weapons storage sites controlled by Houthi forces in Yemen.

According to a report from Reuters, Austin pointed out that the U.S. military had identified several underground facilities used by the Houthis, which contained various weapon components designed to target civilian and military vessels across the region. Earlier this month, U.S. forces had conducted 15 attacks on related Houthi targets, with local residents reporting explosions near military outposts and an airport.

The U.S. Central Command also shared on social media that they are currently assessing the results of the strikes, which, so far, show no civilian casualties.

In an interview, Austin clarified that he authorized this round of strikes under the orders of President Joe Biden, with the goal of “further degrading” the capabilities of the Houthi forces.

This marked the first time the U.S. military deployed the B-2 Spirit bombers in their operations against Houthi forces in Yemen. The B-2 Spirit bombers are significantly larger than the various aircraft previously used in airstrikes and are capable of carrying more powerful bombs.

As of now, there has been no response from the Houthi forces regarding these recent developments.

Reports indicate that following the outbreak of renewed conflict between Israel and Palestine in October 2023, the Houthis began targeting vessels in the Red Sea that they claimed were connected to Israel, declaring their “support for Palestine.” Since January 12, 2024, the U.S. and U.K. have conducted consecutive airstrikes on Houthi targets, resulting in multiple casualties.

With the influx of 500,000 immigrant children in two years, public school teaching faces challenges

In a classroom at the Sharpsville Public School in Pennsylvania, a first-grade immigrant student sits with his teacher, Dana Smith, pictured in the background. According to data from Syracuse University, over 500,000 school-aged immigrant children have arrived in the U.S. since 2022. This influx has led to crowded classrooms, exacerbated budget shortages, and heightened challenges for teachers in bridging language barriers, igniting tensions in communities unaccustomed to immigration.

To evaluate the impact of immigration on public schools, Reuters conducted a survey of more than 10,000 school districts. Out of the 75 districts that responded, they collectively serve around 2.3 million students, roughly 5% of the total public school student population. Notably, one-third of these districts reported that the increase in immigrant students significantly affects their operations.

The responding districts span 23 states, with 42 of them indicating they are hiring more ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers and consultants. Fifteen districts described difficulties in communication with parents and a lack of interpretation services.

Take Nashville, Tennessee, as an example. From 2010 to 2020, international migration contributed to a 20% net increase in the city’s population. The Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools serve students from over 130 countries, speaking 120 different languages, with nearly one-third of students communicating in languages other than English. The most common non-English languages include Spanish, Arabic, Kurdish, Somali, Burmese, and Vietnamese.

In Springfield City, Ohio, the school district stated, “Textbooks are not available in their language, resources are hard to come by, and Google Translate does not always meet our needs.”

White House spokesperson Angelo Fernandez Hernandez noted that the Biden administration has increased funding to address the teacher shortage and has requested an additional $50 million to support English learning initiatives.

In the Reuters survey, 17 districts expressed a need for extra state funding to assist immigrant students. Among these, 12 reported receiving additional funds, but they remain insufficient to hire a single ESL supervisor.

Ten districts revealed that teachers either lack adequate training or are not trained at all to meet the needs of new immigrant students. In contrast, 42 districts welcomed additional training for teachers and administrators.

This training encompasses strategies for teaching non-English-speaking students, handling diverse cultural norms, and helping children recover from trauma.

Denver Public Schools Superintendent Alex Marrero highlighted that, apart from language barriers and differing educational backgrounds, the surge in immigrant numbers “has prompted our system to establish citywide processes not only for communicating with immigrant families but also for supporting their basic needs and preparing students for school.”

However, 11 surveyed districts expressed that new immigrants enrich the campus community, bringing fresh perspectives and resilience, providing learning opportunities for other students.

US plans to deploy THAAD to help intercept Iranian missiles

According to reports from the Associated Press and several Israeli media sources on October 12, U.S. officials are carefully considering the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in Israel. This initiative comes in response to Iran’s launch of nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel earlier this month, with Israel weighing its options for retaliation. A source in Tehran informed CNN on the same day that Iran has warned the U.S. that any new attacks by Israel will be met with a decisive response.

The news regarding the potential THAAD deployment first emerged from Channel 12 News in Israel. A U.S. official indicated to Israeli media that a final decision has not yet been reached.

The purpose of deploying THAAD in Israel is to prepare for intercepting any retaliatory ballistic missiles launched by Iran, especially in light of anticipated Israeli reprisal for the October 1 attack. The U.S. had previously deployed THAAD in Israel in March 2019, although that installation was not intended to be permanent.

As of April, a report from the Congressional Research Service detailed that the Army currently has seven THAAD battery units manufactured by Lockheed Martin. THAAD is considered complementary to the Patriot missile system, with a wider range of coverage, extending from 150 to 200 kilometers.

Each THAAD battery, which costs billions of dollars, typically consists of six truck-mounted launchers, 48 interceptors, a radar system, and AN/TPY-2 radar equipment, requiring a total of 95 military personnel to operate. Currently, only the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates possess THAAD systems, while other nations that have previously deployed them, such as Romania, Israel, and South Korea, rely on U.S. personnel for operation.

Following a major attack on Israel by the militant group Hamas on October 7, 2022, the Pentagon ordered the deployment of a THAAD battery and an additional Patriot missile battalion to the region to protect American military assets. Reports from Defense News indicate that the first known combat interception by THAAD occurred in January 2022, when the United Arab Emirates used the system to destroy a medium-range ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi forces.

679 gambling dens were destroyed, and Liaoning achieved initial results in cracking down on rural gambling crimes.

During a press conference organized by the Liaoning Provincial Government’s Information Office on October 16, Director Shen Min of the Provincial Public Security Department emphasized the importance of combating rural gambling in the region. The department has launched the “Qingfeng 2024” initiative to specifically target illegal gambling activities in rural areas, and the campaign has already shown promising results.

From June 24 to September 30, aligned with the Ministry of Public Security’s nationwide summer security campaigns, the Liaoning Public Security Bureau mobilized its forces to address these issues comprehensively. This initiative combined elements of the summer approach with the “Safe Guard” operations.

Rural gambling has long posed significant challenges to local governance, adversely affecting both social values and the development of rural revitalization efforts. In response, Liaoning authorities have rigorously implemented the “Qingfeng 2024” campaign during the summer and “Safe Guard” actions, with a focus on dismantling illegal gambling activities such as operating casinos, hosting gambling gatherings, and engaging in online betting.

Since the campaign’s inception, law enforcement has dismantled 353 criminal groups and eliminated 679 gambling dens while resolving 3,492 cases of illegal gambling. The number of suspects apprehended has reached 9,237, reflecting increases of 27.4%, 100.3%, 121.3%, and 26%, respectively, compared to previous periods. Notably, authorities also successfully cracked down on a significant cross-city casino operation in Dalian, arresting 130 individuals, which has greatly improved the social security landscape in rural areas.

Looking ahead, Shen Min stated that the Liaoning Public Security Department will continue to prioritize the crackdown on rural gambling crimes as a key mission, striving to uphold a safe and stable social environment in the region.

Natural disasters cost an average of $1 billion every three weeks, and the federal government faces fiscal challenges_1

In a recent interview, experts voiced serious concerns about the escalating financial burden imposed by natural disasters linked to extreme weather patterns. The devastation caused by Hurricane Milton in Florida has sent ripples through the economy, with initial estimates indicating a staggering $50 billion in damages. This disaster comes on the heels of two catastrophic hurricanes striking the southeastern U.S. within just a few weeks, further complicating an already challenging fiscal situation for the federal government.

According to a report by The Washington Post, Florida suffered significant losses as Hurricane Milton wreaked havoc on the state, prompting urgent calls for federal funding to support the reconstruction of vital infrastructure. As federal statistics reveal, the nation experiences an average of one natural disaster causing over $1 billion in losses every three weeks. With the frequency and intensity of storms, droughts, wildfires, and floods increasing, the financial impact of recovery efforts has ballooned, placing additional stress on an already staggering national debt exceeding $35 trillion.

Mark Zandi, Chief Economist at Moody’s Analytics, highlighted the grim outlook, stating, “Every year we see hundreds of billions or even trillions allocated for disaster recovery, which only darkens our financial prospects.” He added, “Unless we make some significant changes, this will certainly be one of the factors straining our nation’s finances in the future.”

The deterioration of the U.S. financial outlook can be attributed to various factors, including increased spending, a rapidly aging population, and insufficient tax revenues, all exacerbated by the growing threats posed by climate change.

Two years ago, a senior budget advisor to President Biden projected that the federal government would need to earmark an additional $128 billion for reconstruction efforts over the coming decades in response to major disasters. Andy Winkler, Director of Housing and Infrastructure at the Bipartisan Policy Center, noted, “There’s substantial evidence that we are investing more in response to the range of disasters triggered by climate change.”

The Congressional Research Service (CRS), an independent agency, reported that funding allocated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for disaster relief soared to over $41 billion in the 2023 fiscal year. However, as the economic toll from various disasters escalates, the federal budget for post-disaster recovery is expected to keep growing.

W. Craig Fugate, former FEMA Administrator, reflected on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, explaining, “Even 11 years after Katrina, we were still providing disaster assistance,” underscoring that “disasters leave behind a long tail.” He acknowledged that as hurricane seasons become more intense, the burden of recovery work only increases.
