Xingyu’s IPO market is sweet, Zhang Guowei is self-effacing as a -little white rabbit- and does not speculate in stocks

Formerly just six years old, Starlux Airlines has now made history as Taiwan’s first airline to complete its public listing. We had the opportunity to sit down with Chairman Chang Kuo-wei, who is eager to position the airline as a premium brand in the aviation market.

On October 25, Starlux Airlines celebrated its debut on the stock market with a lot of buzz surrounding the event. The airline became the first in Taiwan to go public just six years after its establishment, making waves not only with the number of shares auctioned but also with the total amount of capital raised—both figures representing the largest scale seen in the current market. Chang emphasized that Starlux is an international airline focused on its operations, rather than merely engaging in stock speculation. Listing on the stock market offers investors a chance to support and invest in a premium airline like Starlux.

On its first trading day, the stock opened at NT$20 and soared by 53% to close at NT$30.75. Investors who secured shares and bought the maximum allowed were able to cash out with profits of around NT$20,000 (approximately $623) on the very first day. The trading volume reached an impressive 252,000 shares, the highest on that day, leaving the second-place contender far behind with only 105,000 shares.

Last year, as Starlux prepared for its initial public offering (IPO), the stock price fluctuated significantly, peaking at NT$50.5 and bottoming out at NT$31.35. This volatility prompted some investors to form online support groups. With the transition to being a publicly listed company, the stock is expected to remain a hot topic among investors. Notably, there is keen interest in other airlines like Tigerair, EVA Air, and China Airlines as well.

Starlux had a total of 79,900 shares available for underwriting, with a remarkable 1,607,558 applications received over three days—making it the only IPO this year to surpass one million applications, with a success rate of 2.48%.

In mid-October, the pre-IPO auction drew significant attention, with 319,600 shares available and valid bids totaling 687,938, reflecting an oversubscription ratio of 2.2—marking the auction and total bid amounts as the largest in the market to date.

During his speech, Chang humorously reflected on the journey from obtaining approval for establishment in 2018 to navigating four years of operations, amidst the challenges of a global pandemic. “Our journey has been full of ups and downs, much like today’s weather. Despite the turbulent times, we have stood firm, and we entered the stock exchange with great determination,” he shared.

Chang highlighted the advantages of being publicly listed for investors, saying it provides them with better security and efficiency while granting Starlux access to diverse funding sources. He reassured those who weren’t able to secure shares this time by mentioning that as a young company, Starlux will have additional fundraising opportunities in the future, allowing more people to participate.

Looking ahead to the next phase of business expansion, Chang stated that Starlux’s fleet currently consists of over 20 aircraft, with ambitions to grow to over 50 within the next two years. The market demand is strong, and plans for an additional ten long-haul aircraft are already in the works.

Starlux has always prioritized safety and remains committed to providing exceptional service, a dedication that has garnered substantial support from travelers. Chang views the feedback received as motivation for continuous improvement and growth.

When asked about being compared to established competitors like EVA Air, China Airlines, and Tigerair, Chang joked, “I’ve always seen myself as the little rabbit, quietly navigating the landscape while the bigger players dominate. Each airline has its own strengths, contributing to a flourishing civil aviation sector in Taiwan, and I think Tigerair is doing extremely well.”

The Chinese community in Brooklyn was very enthusiastic. Hundreds of people voted in half a day._2

The Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, located in Sunset Park, serves as one of the voting stations for the local Chinese community. By the afternoon of October 26, over 300 people had already cast their votes. New York State kicked off early voting on this date, and as soon as the polls opened, more than a dozen voters were seen lining up outside the church. According to the election station manager, participation was robust, and they anticipate a busy few days ahead. Thanks to the abundance of online information, voters have been better informed, reducing the occurrences of confusion, such as going to the wrong voting station.

Linda S. Lyons, the senior coordinator at the polling station, reported that as of around 1 PM, more than 300 people had visited to vote. Drawing from past presidential election experiences, she expects a high volume of voters in the coming days, with over 30 translators and volunteers on site daily. She recalled the previous presidential early voting day when long lines formed an hour before opening, with many voters braving the rain. Lyons cautioned that voters cannot enter the polling place before opening hours, and any votes cast before then would be considered invalid. She emphasized the importance of checking the opening times before heading out.

Lyons noted that many voters checked their voting station addresses in advance, leading to a minimal number going to the wrong places that day. To assist Chinese-speaking voters, the station offered four translators fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, along with Ballot Marking Devices that provide multilingual support for voters. “Through the translation available on the device, plus the assistance from translators, they shouldn’t have to worry too much,” she added.

On that day, a male voter supporting Donald Trump, wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, entered the polling area unbothered by a staff request to remove it. It wasn’t until police intervened that he took off the hat. Senior coordinator Mike Huang reiterated that items featuring campaign slogans, candidate names, or promotional materials are not permitted in the voting area.

One of the Chinese translators reported seeing over 30 Chinese voters casting their ballots by noon, indicating an increase since previous elections. Some voters approached with uncertainty about whom to vote for and sought staff advice. The translator responded, “I can’t interfere or give opinions; it’s your right to decide.”

Rumor about immigrant in Springfield, Ohio, eating pets affects many Haitian communities

In a small town in Pennsylvania, residents are expressing their frustrations through posters reading, “Foreigners and Haitians, stay away. America can’t accommodate this filth,” highlighting rising tensions in the community. These sentiments have been fueled by unfounded rumors from some Republican circles claiming that immigrants are harming local pets, particularly affecting Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, and subsequently impacting Haitian communities across the nation.

Sarah Jacques, a 22-year-old Haitian woman who moved from Port-au-Prince to Albertville, Alabama, just a year ago, describes her life as turned upside down. “When I first arrived, people waved at us and greeted us, but now it’s different. When people see you, their expressions are either silent or filled with fear,” she shares candidly.

According to reports from the Associated Press, President Biden offered a temporary reprieve in 2023, allowing up to 30,000 immigrants monthly from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to enter the U.S. legally. Recently, about 300,000 Haitian immigrants were authorized to remain in the country until February 2026.

Data shows that Alabama had around 2,370 Haitian immigrants in 2023, with Robin Lathan, the executive secretary for Albertville, noting a steady increase in the immigrant population over the past 30 years. “Especially last year, we saw an uptick in numbers,” she adds. The local school district reported that out of 5,800 students last year, 34% came from non-English-speaking immigrant families, a significant rise from 17% in 2017.

Tensions escalated this August in Springfield when a local man’s bus ride to a chicken processing plant triggered rampant speculation about the hiring of illegal immigrants. This led to community meetings where some locals demanded explanations about the legal work rights of Haitians and others suggested landlords deny housing to them, even insinuating that immigrants have body odor.

Unique Dunson, a 27-year-old lifelong resident, admits, “Whenever non-white immigrants arrive in our community, it seems like issues arise.” In response to the hostile atmosphere, Dunson has been putting up signs that read, “Welcome, new neighbors! We’re glad you are here,” in English, Spanish, and Creole.

John Pierre-Charles, a Haitian pastor in the town since 2006, has seen his congregation grow from seven to nearly 300 members over the past 14 years. However, he acknowledges the cloud of fear that has settled over the Haitian community in recent months. “Some people are very scared, fearing they might be deported back to Haiti, while others are worried about how others might act towards them,” he states.

How the best railway station in UK earned its title

On a mild October Friday, the buzz at Maghull railway station is palpable, even though rush hour has passed. This North West station is bustling with energy, far from the quiet platforms one might expect. Recently, Maghull has gained significant attention, having been crowned the best station in the UK as part of the 2024 World Cup of Stations competition.

Curious about what sets Maghull apart, I ventured to the scene. The first impression? A spacious, free parking lot, complete with a bus exchange service—definitely a win for commuters. A charming brick building ushers visitors into a cozy ticket office, and the recently opened Coffee Carriage café is just around the corner. A stylish footbridge connects the platforms, adorned with a stunning stained glass window showcasing local artistry.

As I make my way in, I encounter Margaret Walton, an 85-year-old volunteer armed with a litter-picker and an infectious smile. Margaret shares her dedication to keeping the station clean, stating, “I come every day, even on Christmas.”

Yet, Margaret’s contributions reach far beyond litter-picking. She has painted intricate murals that illustrate daily station life, bringing warmth and character to the surroundings. When I asked if she had formal training in art, she chuckled, “Oh no, I taught myself! They wouldn’t let me into college because I couldn’t spell.”

Outside, beautifully maintained planter boxes and whimsical sculptures reflect the hard work of the Maghull Volunteers, a group founded nearly 20 years ago. Chairwoman Doreen Bird, 81, shared her passion for the station’s aesthetics: “It’s amazing how much people appreciate the beauty of the station. One lady told me, ‘It makes me smile every Monday morning when I really don’t want to go to work.’ That’s what keeps us going.”

During my visit, passengers congratulated staff, highlighting how the station isn’t just functional—it’s a community hub that brings joy. Maureen Webb, an 81-year-old tailor on her way to a charity event, praised the station’s cleanliness and care. “If there were more people like the staff and volunteers, the world would be a better place,” she said.

The Gillespie family echoed this sentiment. New to the area, Tom, 67, gushed, “It’s incredibly friendly here. You get off the train and feel welcomed.” His wife, Marie, added, “It may be small, but it’s beautiful.”

Maghull has truly transformed into a communal space. The arrival of The Coffee Carriage in February has not only drawn locals but also hosted events ranging from casual knitting sessions to discussions on mental health. June Avery of the Friday Strollers walking group commented, “You step off the train, and it just lifts your mood. It feels like a real community here.”

Barista Liz Roger encapsulated the station’s essence when she said, “It’s not just about serving coffee; it’s about being part of the community. People love coming here, and we love having them.”

Inside the café, I chatted with Sonya Hampson, the station manager for eight years. Sonya explained that the station’s vibrant community spirit didn’t happen overnight. “It’s about having a dedicated team and passionate volunteers who take pride in their work,” she said.

When I asked what other stations might learn from Maghull, she said, “To create a sense of community, it’s essential to find the heart of it and foster a shared passion for the station.”

Angela Horton, a retailer at Maghull for 17 years, reflected on the joy of working in such an environment: “It really sets a positive tone for the day. Seeing all the flowers in bloom makes everything feel right.” Her colleague Ray Badrock, who also cherishes the friendly atmosphere, added, “It’s a place where everyone knows each other. We call each other by our first names, and that adds to the warmth.”

At Maghull railway station, it’s clear that community spirit thrives, showcasing how dedication and love can transform a humble transport hub into a beloved local landmark.

The new NBA season starts tonight, with the defending champion Celtics vs. Knicks taking the lead

The NBA is set to kick off its new season on the evening of October 22, with the defending champions, the Boston Celtics, opening against the New York Knicks. Following that matchup, the Los Angeles Lakers will host the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Last season, the Celtics, led by their star duo Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, made significant additions to their roster with trades that brought in key players like Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday. This strong lineup not only secured the franchise’s first championship in 16 years but also earned them their historic 18th banner, solidifying their position as the team with the most championships in NBA history.

With minimal changes to their roster, the Celtics’ primary goal this season is to defend their title. They will kick off the new campaign at home against the Knicks, hoping to start the season on a winning note.

On the other hand, the Knicks have been aggressive in the offseason, making trades to acquire Mikal Bridges and All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns. Coupled with their existing stars Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, the Knicks have a solid chance of challenging the Celtics’ dominance in the Eastern Conference, adding excitement to this opening game.

Following that, the Lakers, spearheaded by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, will take on the Timberwolves at home. A highly anticipated aspect of this matchup is the potential for LeBron to share the court with his son Bronny James. If this happens, it would mark a historic first in the NBA, showcasing a father-son duo playing together.

With only 24 hours to go until the 2024-25 regular season tips off on TNT, excitement is building for the thrilling matchups ahead!
