Betsy Obaseki Dreams Participation of European Teams in Future BOWFT Tournaments

In a recent media briefing at the Government House in Benin City, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, the visionary behind the Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament, expressed her enthusiasm for the participation of two teams from Benin Republic in the tournament’s 2024 edition. This marks a significant milestone as it’s the first time foreign teams have joined the competition, and Mrs. Obaseki sees it as a crucial step toward attracting European clubs in the future.

“When we started this competition, we kicked off with just four teams,” she said. “Now, we’ve expanded to 14 teams. One of our primary goals has always been to grow this into an international event, and I honestly didn’t expect it to happen so soon with the inclusion of the two teams from Benin Republic. We’re eagerly anticipating the day we can welcome European teams to our tournament.”

Mrs. Obaseki emphasized her commitment to enhancing the tournament’s quality, announcing an increase in the prize money for this year’s winner from last year’s N7 million to N10 million. “It’s vital for the tournament to evolve and improve with each edition,” she asserted.

She also reassured attendees that the tournament’s legacy would extend beyond her husband’s tenure as governor of Edo State, which wraps up in November. “We’re looking to engage the private sector to ensure the tournament’s sustainability,” she added. To support this initiative, she has founded the Betsy Obaseki Foundation and partnered with Nilayo Sports Management Limited to serve as the official marketer for the competition.
