Venezuelan opposition leaders win EU parliament’s top human rights honor

The European Parliament has awarded its prestigious Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Venezuelan opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo González, recognizing their tireless efforts in representing the Venezuelan people in their struggle to restore freedom and democracy.

In the wake of a controversial presidential election in 2024, where Machado was initially positioned as the democratic opposition candidate against the incumbent, Nicolás Maduro, she was disqualified by the government, leading González to step in, despite having no prior political experience.

The lead-up to the election was marked by widespread repression, including disqualifications, arrests, and various human rights violations. Amid these threats, Machado took refuge, fearing for her life. Meanwhile, a Venezuelan court issued an arrest warrant for González, who subsequently sought political asylum in Spain.

Roberta Metsola, president of the European Parliament, highlighted their courage, stating, “In their quest for a fair, free, and peaceful transition of power, they have fearlessly upheld values that millions of Venezuelans and we in the European Parliament hold dear—justice, democracy, and the rule of law.” She expressed solidarity with Machado and González, reaffirming, “This parliament stands with the people of Venezuela in their struggle for a democratic future.”

González took to social media platform X to express his honor and gratitude for the award, crediting Machado as an exceptional leader whose political acumen and unwavering spirit have kept the flame of freedom alive in Venezuela. He also extended his appreciation to his fellow Venezuelans, commending their civility and courage in facing a regime that consistently violates human rights.

Despite this recognition, González cautioned that the battle for democracy in Venezuela continues, as the regime continues to obstruct political change and perpetrate human rights violations. He urged supporters of democracy globally to assist in upholding the sovereign mandate of the Venezuelan people.

The Sakharov Prize, established in 1988 in honor of Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, acknowledges individuals or groups committed to defending human rights and basic freedoms. The selection of the award recipient involves senior EU lawmakers who evaluate nominations from various political groups within the parliament.

This year’s prize, which comes with a €50,000 (approximately $54,000) endowment, will be formally awarded in mid-December during a ceremony at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Other notable nominees included grassroots organizations from the Middle East, such as Women Wage Peace and Women of the Sun, as well as Azerbaijani anti-corruption activist Gubad Ibadoghlu. Past laureates of the Sakharov Prize have gone on to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, including figures like Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousafzai.

Life-threatening crises, frantic calls- Idaho offers glimpse of what abortion could look like under Trump

Women and doctors are grappling with heart-wrenching decisions under what may be the strictest abortion ban in the U.S. — Idaho. As Jennifer Adkins and her husband contemplated having their second child, the implications of the state’s near-total abortion ban lingered in the back of their minds. Adkins had enjoyed a smooth first pregnancy, opting out of an epidural during delivery. She expected her second pregnancy would follow suit, but everything changed dramatically in April 2023.

At 12 weeks pregnant, an ultrasound delivered devastating news. The couple had nicknamed the fetus “Spooky” in honor of the October due date, but the scan revealed severe complications. Adkins’ doctors informed her that Spooky displayed multiple signs of a chromosomal disorder alongside dangerously severe swelling — conditions typically leading to miscarriage or death shortly after birth. Additionally, continuing the pregnancy could jeopardize Adkins’ life due to the risk of life-threatening pre-eclampsia.

Sitting in a coffee shop near Boise, a visibly emotional Adkins recounted the experience: “I don’t think you can truly understand how scary and awful it is until you’re in that situation.” According to Idaho law, abortions can occur only in medical emergencies. However, her case didn’t meet the threshold deemed an emergency — her doctors were too fearful of potential repercussions from the state’s stringent abortion laws to even refer her to an out-of-state clinic.

This left the couple scrambling, calling clinics in Washington, Oregon, and Utah in search of an appointment — all while managing the logistical nightmare of financing travel and the procedure itself. “We were trying to figure out how to mourn the loss of a baby we really wanted, while figuring out these logistics,” she said. “None of us feel good about making that decision. But it is a loving choice we should be able to make for our family.”

Adkins isn’t alone. Many women have reported being denied medically necessary abortions since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which paved the way for numerous states to impose strict bans. Although these laws technically allow for abortion in emergencies, the vague wording leaves medical professionals unsure of when they can legally intervene. As a result, many doctors feel compelled to delay treatment until patients face dire consequences, often waiting until they are critically ill.

Idaho, as the epicenter of these restrictive measures, serves as a cautionary tale for other states. The state’s crackdown on abortion has resulted in a significant exodus of healthcare providers, compounding existing issues related to maternal and infant mortality rates. “Idaho is a textbook example of the playbook for those opposed to abortion access and reproductive healthcare,” noted Jessica Waters, a professor at American University specializing in reproductive rights. “Everything happening in Idaho could potentially play out across the country.”

The landscape for abortion access could be influenced even more if Donald Trump were to reclaim the presidency. While he recently stated he would veto a national ban, his past flip-flops on the issue raise concerns. The controversial Project 2025 policy proposal suggests utilizing the Comstock Act—a law from 1873—to ban the mailing of abortion-related materials, threatening access to abortion pills, which constitute about two-thirds of all abortions in the U.S.

“Thinking about my family and future patients, we made the difficult decision to leave [Idaho] because of the bans,” shared Dr. Kylie Cooper, who left the state for Minnesota to avoid the legal ramifications of providing necessary medical care. Over 22% of Idaho obstetricians left their positions within 15 months of the ban’s implementation, and hospitals are closing labor and delivery wards as a result.

Rebekka Schaffner, pregnant with a high-risk pregnancy, recalled her own harrowing experience after suffering a miscarriage last year. Doctors hesitated to provide standard treatment out of fear of violating the law, ultimately leading her to the hospital with an infection. “They should have handled it properly, and I wouldn’t have gotten sick,” she lamented.

Adkins eventually received the abortion she needed at a clinic in Oregon, after an exhausting search. Although an abortion fund aided her with costs, the emotional toll of leaving her home state amid such a loss was overwhelming. She later joined a lawsuit urging the state to clarify its medical exceptions regarding abortions.

As she nursed her infant, Adkins shared her resolve for the future: “Now that the stakes are extremely high with this election, we decided to take a firmer stance on preventing pregnancy. I don’t know what kind of access to care I’m going to have.”

The second largest freshwater wetland fire in New Zealand’s North Island has been brought under control

In an exclusive interview, we dive into the recent wildfire incident at Whangamarino Wetland, located in New Zealand’s North Island. Reported on October 23, authorities from New Zealand’s Fire Department confirmed that after three days of concerted firefighting efforts, the blaze has now been brought under control.

The fire broke out on October 21, engulfing an area of 1,024 hectares with an approximate perimeter of 15 kilometers. The Fire Department received the first emergency alert at around 1:15 PM local time on the 21st and mobilized their resources immediately. By October 23 at 5 PM, aerial firefighting operations were suspended, indicating progress in controlling the fire. Investigations into the cause of the blaze are still ongoing, and fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.

As detailed by the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, firefighters relied on aerial support for their efforts, as heavy machinery could not be deployed in the wetland’s challenging terrain, which made establishing fire breaks difficult. A remarkable effort involved 50 firefighters, along with seven helicopters and two fixed-wing aircraft working tirelessly to combat the flames.

Mark Tinworth, a representative from the Fire Department, stated that firefighters will continue to remain on standby at the location since wildfires in peat and wetland areas can take considerable time to fully extinguish.

Whangamarino Wetland, nestled in the Waikato region, spans nearly 7,000 hectares, making it the second-largest freshwater wetland on New Zealand’s North Island. It is also part of the Arawai Kākāriki Wetland Restoration Programme, which identifies this site as one of three nationally significant wetlands in the country.

Niwha Jones, the Waikato Operations Manager for the New Zealand Department of Conservation, highlighted the significance of the wetland, pointing out that the fire occurred in its central marshlands. This area houses the largest dome peat swamp and is one of the few remaining such swamps in the Southern Hemisphere. It hosts an incredibly rare ecosystem, serving as a habitat for endangered bird species and one of New Zealand’s largest carbon sinks.

Jones emphasized that Whangamarino is internationally recognized for its ecological importance and rich biodiversity. While the incident raises concerns, he cautioned that it’s still too early to assess the full impact of the fire on the wetland and its ecosystem.

Using stamps to educate the mind, enlighten the mind and enhance beauty- -Future Classroom- enters the China Postal Stamp Museum

On October 12th, the “Future Classroom – Exploring the World of Stamps” event took place at the China Post Stamp Museum in Beijing. Organized by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation and the China National Philatelic Federation, the event attracted over 50 elementary school students from Beijing.

Participants had the opportunity to visit the special exhibition “Remembering Our Original Mission and Advancing on a New Journey,” as well as the permanent collection at the museum. During the event, they engaged in a session with Dong Qi, a senior arts and crafts artist, stamp designer, and engraver, who led discussions and interactive activities.

In the “Little Stamp Designers” segment, students were divided into eight groups, each tasked with designing stamps based on themes such as “Central Axis,” “Zodiac,” and “Chinese Aviation.” They presented their creations and shared their thought processes on stage. Dong remarked that the students’ creativity inspired her own artistic ideas.

“Traditionally, stamps were mainly for mail delivery; however, they have now evolved into cultural carriers that enrich people’s cultural life and foster international cultural exchange,” Dong explained. She highlighted that stamps, which have undergone nearly 200 years of development, document the progress of the times and the achievements of the nation, making them deserving of the title “national business cards.”

Wang Chenhan, a fourth grader from Cuiwei Primary School, took the stage with his group to present their stamp project featuring the Zodiac dragon. The design was inspired by Han dynasty bricks and mimicked the form of rubbings, all hand-painted using traditional Chinese painting techniques. Though the lines were slightly rough, the design showcased the child’s vivid imagination and respect for traditional culture.

“I learned a lot about the history, design, and production of stamps today,” Wang remarked. “This is my first experience with stamps, and I feel both curious and in awe of these little pieces of paper that hold rich cultural secrets.”

The “Future Classroom” initiative, launched by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, aims to fulfill the fundamental educational mission of nurturing talents for the Party and the country. Since its inception in 2018, the program has held over 400 activities both online and offline, striving to cultivate well-rounded, new-era youth.

This session marked the first time the “Future Classroom” focused specifically on stamps, with the goal of using them to tell compelling stories about China to young people. The initiative encourages students to understand their country’s history, appreciate Chinese culture, inherit revolutionary ideals, and celebrate patriotism.

The Nobel Prize in Economics winner’s theory proves that institutions affect national prosperity_1

This year’s Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences has been awarded to three scholars, and on the 14th, Professor Qiu Dasheng from National Dong Hwa University shared his insights on their groundbreaking work. He emphasized that the trio has devoted their research to understanding the impact of policies on the economy, particularly in efforts to reduce income inequality within nations. Their recognition reflects the academic community’s increasing concern about the issue of wealth disparity in today’s world.

Professor Qiu Junrong from National Central University noted that the winners’ theories align closely with institutional economics, emphasizing that while the fundamental principles of economics rely on market mechanisms, the government plays a crucial role. It must not only align with market forces but also use institutional frameworks to guide the market efficiently, ensuring that wealth is distributed equitably.

Professor Qiu Dasheng also pointed out that all three laureates advocate for the idea that “institutions” can significantly influence prosperity. They have focused on addressing the vast income gap between countries, which he identifies as a major challenge of our time. Their research highlights a staggering disparity: the wealth of the world’s richest 20% of countries is 30 times that of the poorest 20%, and while the wealth of affluent nations continues to grow, low-income countries struggle to close the gap.

Adding to this, Professor Qiu Junrong remarked that the laureates have made substantial contributions to our understanding of the reasons behind the disparities in prosperity among nations. They have demonstrated the critical importance of social institutions in promoting national wealth. In essence, while economics primarily revolves around market dynamics, it is also essential for governments to make necessary adjustments through sound institutional policies. This approach can guide economic development in a positive direction, ensuring that resources are allocated more efficiently and allowing the public to benefit from economic growth.

On the contrary, if a government’s established social institutions and incentives contradict market principles, it can hinder societal benefits and even cause harm. Thus, it is crucial for government-designed institutions to align with the cultural and social characteristics of the nation to yield favorable outcomes.

Thousands of acres of aquaculture parks were in crisis due to power outages due to strong winds, and power supply -land and air- rescue efforts saved 150 million yuan in losses

On October 24, news from Suqian, Jiangsu, reported by Wang Songzhu, highlights the urgency faced by fish farmers in Shuyang County. Recently, an intense windstorm exceeding level 8 struck the region, causing widespread power outages in the aquaculture area of Machang Town. This outage not only disrupted oxygen supply systems but also put over 1.5 billion yuan worth of aquatic products at risk of suffocation.

In a race against time, rescue operations began in the late hours, combining both land and aerial efforts. Zhang Liancheng, the head of the aquaculture facility, frantically called the State Grid’s Shuyang County power supply company for help. “We’ve lost power in the fishponds! Our fish and shrimp—worth over 100 million yuan—might not make it!” His distress was palpable; the on-duty staff member, Lu Haitao, immediately grasped the severity of the situation.

Lu, well-acquainted with the facility, understood the stakes involved. The pond contained valuable species including koi, crabs, and recently introduced 420,000 pounds of South American shrimp. Any loss due to oxygen deprivation would be catastrophic, particularly for the shrimp, which require immediate oxygen when placed in temperature-controlled environments. If the power was out for more than one hour, the shrimp were likely to perish.

“Please switch to the backup power! We’re heading out right now!” Lu reassured Zhang over the phone. Arriving on-site shortly after, he discovered that the strong winds had halted oxygen machines across seven ponds, affecting approximately 2.8 million pounds of aquatic products. To make matters worse, the backup fuel available could sustain operations for only one hour.

“Identifying the fault in this weather is tricky, and restoring power is time-sensitive. We need to provide temporary power while we fix the issue,” Lu explained as he urgently contacted his power supply station for backup generator support. Within half an hour, an emergency power truck arrived, and Lu and his team worked swiftly to assess the situation and prepare for the generator connection.

With temporary electricity in place, Lu focused on pinpointing the fault and restoring full power. However, navigating the nearly 3,000 acres of dark aquaculture territory proved challenging under the storm’s conditions, with only a few flashlights at their disposal. “Haitao, quickly arrange for the power transmission and transformation inspection center to deploy a drone for lighting,” prompted Jiang Lei, the head of the power supply station.

By 6:50 PM, the emergency power was successfully connected, illuminating the facility and providing immediate relief for the farmers. With the drone’s assistance, Lu and his colleagues quickly identified the outage’s root cause: a fault in the low-voltage cable connected to the facility’s transformer that required urgent replacement.

After over five hours of intense repair work, normal power supply was restored, and the familiar hum of oxygen machines resumed, bringing bubbles to the surface of the ponds. “All our hopes for the year rest on these aquatic products worth over 100 million yuan. We can’t imagine the consequences if you hadn’t come to our aid,” a grateful farmer expressed to Lu, highlighting the critical impact of the team’s swift response.

On October 23, according to the Central Meteorological Administration, Typhoon Tanmei, the 20th typhoon of the year, formed in the waters east of the Philippines on the early morning of October 22. As of 2 PM today, the typhoon’s center was located approximately 330 kilometers northeast of Manila, Philippines, with maximum wind speeds of 9 (23 m/s) and a minimum central pressure of 990 hPa. The radius of the 7-level wind circle spans 160 to 270 kilometers. Forecasts indicate that Typhoon Tanmei is expected to move across the northern part of Luzon Island in the Philippines between the night of October 23 and the daytime of October 24, eventually entering the South China Sea by the evening of October 24. From October 23 to 28, strong winds will persist in the southern sea areas due to the combined effects of Typhoon Tanmei and cold air.

When questioned about the typhoon’s projected path and intensity, meteorological experts suggest that Tanmei will move northwest at approximately 20 km/h, gradually strengthening as it approaches the northeastern coast of Luzon. It is anticipated to pass over northern Luzon during the night of October 23 to the daytime of October 24 before transitioning into the eastern waters of the South China Sea. Once in the South China Sea, Tanmei is expected to intensify, possibly reaching typhoon or strong typhoon levels (38-42 m/s, 13-14 levels), and continue toward the southern waters of Hainan Island. Around October 27, Tanmei may encounter another surge of cold air, leading to a gradual weakening and a southward shift or rotation of its center.

In terms of wind forecasts, from October 23 to 28, areas such as the Bashi Channel, the waters east of Taiwan, the Taiwan Strait, most of the East China Sea, the majority of the South China Sea, the Gulf of Tonkin, as well as the coastal waters of Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, and the eastern coast of Taiwan are likely to experience winds of levels 6 to 8, with gusts reaching 9 to 10. Specifically, the coastal regions of Fujian, the western coast of Taiwan, the southern coast of Hainan, and nearby waters of the Xisha and Zhongsha Islands, as well as areas in and around Yongxing Island, Huangyan Island, the Taiwan Strait, Bashi Channel, and parts of the northern and central South China Sea could see wind levels of 9 to 10, with gusts of 11 to 12. The waters around the typhoon’s center could experience winds between levels 11 and 14, with gusts in the range of 15 to 16.

Regarding rainfall, between October 24 and 27, significant to heavy rainfall is expected in regions such as southern Jiangsu, Shanghai, eastern Zhejiang, Taiwan Island, southwestern Guangdong, southeastern Guangxi, Hainan Island, and Sansha. Some areas, particularly in southeastern Zhejiang, eastern Taiwan, Hainan Island, and near Yongxing Island in Sansha, might face torrential rain, with localized extreme rainfall amounts. Cumulative precipitation is anticipated to be between 20 to 60 mm, while regions in southeastern Zhejiang, eastern Taiwan, and Hainan Island could receive 100 to 300 mm, with some parts in eastern Taiwan and Sansha reaching 400 to 600 mm, and areas around Yongxing Island possibly exceeding 600 mm. The primary rainfall period for Taiwan Island is expected to be from October 24 to 25, while for coastal areas in East China and South China, it will primarily occur from October 25 to 26.

Meteorological experts advise that the combined influence of Typhoon Tanmei and cold air will prolong strong winds in the southern seas. They recommend that vessels navigating in the southeastern East China Sea, the Taiwan Strait, the majority of the South China Sea, the Bashi Channel, and waters east of Taiwan return to port or avoid affected areas promptly. Workers engaged in maritime operations in the central and northern South China Sea should evacuate in advance. The public and tourists in regions such as Yongxing Island in Sansha, eastern Taiwan, and Hainan Island should remain vigilant regarding flood risks and closely monitor forecasts and warnings. They are advised to stay away from mountainous, island, and coastal areas that may pose dangers and to take necessary precautions to secure facilities against strong winds.
