In an enchanting blend of Chinese and French aesthetics, Zhejiang’s Xitang, a time-honored gem of Jiangnan, found its way to Paris from October 13 to 16. The event marked a significant cross-cultural exchange, showcasing the unique charm of Xitang while spotlighting its historical significance.
On October 15, at approximately 4:30 PM local time, the “From Jiangnan to Xitang” promotion for the 2024 Chinese Xitang Ancient Town Tourism took place in Paris. This captivating event featured a collaboration between Xitang and the Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Theatre, creating an audiovisual feast for the audience.
“Xitang is the heart of the thriving Yue opera scene. The ‘Yue Opera + Ancient Town’ initiative embraced by Zhejiang opens up new possibilities for the development of Chinese theatre in a modern context. Xitang, as a prime example, warmly welcomes our friends from Europe,” said Cai Zhefei, Vice President of the Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Theatre.
2024 also marks the China-France Cultural Tourism Year. Josiane Gaude, the First Deputy Mayor of Paris’s 7th district, expressed her belief that such cultural exchanges would allow more French visitors to experience the allure of Jiangnan and the unique flavors of Chinese opera.
The promotion kicked off with a stunning display as models dressed in traditional Han attire gracefully took to the stage, captivating the audience with their elegant performance set to the melodious strains of the beloved Chinese song “Jasmine Flower.” Their flowing garments and dynamic movements immediately transported attendees to Xitang, igniting their imagination.
The highlight of the evening was the premiere of Xitang’s promotional video titled “From Jiangnan to Xitang.” With its unique perspective and delicate cinematography, it unfolded like a watercolor painting, enchanting guests and earning widespread acclaim.
Wang Jianming, Director of the Jiaxing Xitang Tourism and Leisure Resort Management Committee, shared insights into the ancient town’s rich history and cultural heritage. He emphasized how Xitang, a “living ancient town,” artfully blends tradition with modernity and cultural tourism with preservation, while introducing a series of upcoming activities between Xitang and the Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Theatre in France.
In addition, Jiaxing Xitang International Travel Agency signed cooperation agreements with several French travel firms, paving new pathways for international tourism collaboration as part of their “cultural export” initiative.
On October 16, the promotional team continued its outreach by engaging with the Chinese Women’s Federation in France and the China-France Cultural Tourism Company, featuring pop-up displays promoting Xitang in iconic locations such as the Eiffel Tower, along the Seine, and at the Louvre.
As the misty waters of Xitang continue to reflect the beauty of this thousand-year-old town, they also encapsulate a culture, a vibrant history, and a flowing essence of Jiangnan.
