During the National Day Golden Week, the number of people entering and leaving Shenzhen at multiple ports increased significantly

On October 8, the Shenzhen Entry-Exit Frontier Inspection Station announced a remarkable uptick in cross-border traffic during the 2024 National Day Golden Week. A striking 87.3% increase in foreign tourist arrivals at Shenzhen Airport was reported compared to the previous year.

We spoke with a representative from the Shenzhen Huanggang Border Inspection Station, who highlighted that a resurgence in cultural and tourism activities, coupled with the expansion of China’s visa-free travel options and the introduction of a 144-hour visa exemption policy, has notably driven an increase in both Hong Kong, Macau residents and foreign tourists. While Hong Kong continues to be a shopping hotspot, destinations such as Thailand, Japan, and South Korea are also capturing the interest of mainland residents looking to travel abroad. The Huanggang port, which operates around the clock, along with the easily accessible Futian port, has been experiencing high passenger traffic.

During the first week of October, the Huanggang Border Inspection Station processed over 1.57 million travelers at both the Huanggang and Futian ports, representing a 23% year-on-year growth. Specifically, more than 1.22 million passengers utilized the Futian port, marking a 24.7% increase. The station also inspected over 69,000 vehicles, up by 13%.

By midnight on October 7, Shenzhen Airport recorded more than 103,600 entries and exits, with over 1,000 flights, translating to increases of 56.9% and 46.1% year-on-year, respectively.

In the first four days of the Golden Week, outbound travel from Shenzhen Airport dominated, with over 33,000 passengers heading abroad—accounting for about 58% of the total traffic. Notably, over 83% of these travelers were mainland residents, reflecting a substantial 79% rise compared to last year. The most sought-after travel destinations were mainly in Southeast Asia and Europe, with Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Germany, and Austria standing out as favorites. Between October 6 and 7, inbound traffic peaked with over 19,000 arrivals, a remarkable 54% increase from the same period last year.

The enthusiasm of foreign tourists to visit China remains robust. From October 1 to 7, more than 6,500 foreigners entered through Shenzhen Airport, which is an impressive 87.3% growth. Among these arrivals, nearly 1,500 entered visa-free, with tourists from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Germany taking the lead.
