A Peruvian court announced on October 21 that former President Alejandro Toledo has been sentenced to 20 years and 6 months in prison on charges of corruption and money laundering.
According to reports by Reuters, prosecutors in Peru accused Toledo of accepting approximately $35 million in bribes from Odebrecht, a major Brazilian construction firm, in exchange for helping the company secure contracts for highway construction projects.
During the trial, Toledo denied all allegations related to collusion and money laundering. Now 78 years old, he served as President of Peru from 2001 to 2006 before moving to the United States for many years. In 2023, he was extradited back to Peru.
