Shearer, Lineker Back Tuchel for England Job

Former England Captain, Alan Shearer, has said that the Three Lions “need a manager who can deliver a trophy” following the appointment of German Thomas Tuchelas boss.
The 51-year-old Tuchel will be the third non-British permanent head coach of the England men’s team when he officially starts work in January. The others are Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Tuchel, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, is tasked with leading England to the 2026 World Cup, where they will hope to end their 60-year wait for a major trophy.
“We need a trophy – it’s as simple as that. We need a manager who can deliver that,” Shearer said on The Rest Is Footballpodcast.
“There’s no doubt (Tuchel) has an incredible CV, but this is going to be a very different test for him. It’s a bold move from the FA, there’s no doubt about it.
“You have to win the tournament, that’s what he’s been hired for. They (the FA) have seen the bunch of players are the best England have had for a long, long time.”
England had been without a permanent manager since Gareth Southgate resigned after eight years in charge following the Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain, with Lee Carsley holding the fort on an interim basis.
Now Tuchel can begin to plan for what the Football Association hopes will prove a fruitful reign.
“He (Tuchel) is a different kind of manager to Southgate,” former England striker Gary Lineker told BBC Sport.
“He will be more of an aggressive coach in terms of playing on the front foot. He is tactically wise and I think he will be more offensive than Southgate.
“It will be interesting to see if he can make them gel and believe in themselves.”
Southgate is the only manager other than 1966 World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey to reach a major tournament final with the England men’s team – doing so at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.
“There is no question that England have the quality needed to challenge for trophies and the upcoming World Cup. They have the ability throughout,” Lineker added.
“Tuchel is familiar with English football – having managed Chelsea between January 2021 and September 2022.”

New music night promises ‘mini festival experience’

Stereo SanctityNorwich band Magnolia have recently won an Arts Council grant to help pay for new studio recordings – and will be playing at Stereo SanctityA new music night promising a "mini festival" experience within the space of a few hours will be launched at the end of the month.
The first Stereo Sanctity event will be held on Friday 25 October at Voodoo Daddy's in Norwich, with further events earmarked for Cambridge and Ipswich.
It has been put together by the co-founder of the long-running annual Sound and Vision convention, which started off in the city before moving to Cambridge in 2022.
"I wanted to get back to promoting individual gigs," said organiser Adrian Cooke, who lives in Cambridge.
'An experience'"Me and my son Jamie are doing it together – we've got two generations curating," he said.
"It's almost like a mini festival in a night, rather than a gig where there's a support band and then a headliner and not much else.

The night's name, Stereo Sanctity, is the title of a Sonic Youth song – giving an insight into the promised music, summed up by Mr Cooke as "alternative, slightly experimental, slightly noisy and generally very eclectic".

Gaza ceasefire talks stalled for a month as US demands proof that it has not implemented hunger policy

On October 16, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield addressed the Security Council, emphasizing that the U.S. will be closely monitoring the actions of the Israeli military in the region. She raised concerns regarding the alleged “General’s Plan,” a strategy that reportedly involves cutting off humanitarian aid to northern Gaza in an effort to pressure Hamas into submission. In her remarks, Thomas-Greenfield noted that the U.S. is demanding proof from Israel that this plan is not being implemented.

According to The Washington Post, the “General’s Plan” was presented to Congress and Prime Minister Netanyahu by retired generals and senior officials. It outlines a systematic approach to clearing the area in order to establish full control, which includes evacuations, cutting off supplies, and eliminating those who remain.

In a session convened by France, the U.K., and Algeria, Thomas-Greenfield described this policy as “terrifying and unacceptable,” stressing its implications under international law and U.S. legislation. She added that the Israeli government has denied these allegations, asserting that food and other essential supplies will not be cut off. “The U.S. will carefully monitor whether Israel’s on-ground actions align with this commitment,” she stated. On October 13, the U.S. government privately urged Israel to enhance the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza within a 30-day deadline.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani commented on the status of the ceasefire negotiations, saying, “Basically, there have been no discussions or contacts at all in the past 3 to 4 weeks. We are just going in circles, with all parties remaining silent.”

Nigeria’s Crude Oil Production Slumped  to 1.32m bpd in September, OPEC Data Shows

•Cartel cuts 2024, 2025 global oil demand growth again
Emmanuel Addeh in Abuja
Latest data from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) yesterday showed that Nigeria’s average daily crude oil production fell to 1.32 million barrels per day (bpd) in September 2024, despite recent efforts to ramp up output.
OPEC, in its monthly oil market report, said the production data was based on direct communication with Nigerian authorities, although quoting secondary sources, it disclosed that oil volume produced during the month was 1.4 million bpd.
OPEC stated that September’s output figure represented a 2.22 percent decrease from the 1.35 million bpd recorded in August.
Although the country retained its position as the biggest oil producer in Africa, followed by Algeria, which produced 908,000 bpd in the month under review, it nevertheless faced severe underproduction compared to the 1.58 million bpd quota handed down by OPEC.
According to the data Congo was the third-largest oil producer with 270,000 bpd in the month under consideration.
Notably, while crude oil output increased mainly in Iran and Kuwait, production in Libya, Iraq, Nigeria, and Saudi Arabia decreased, even as total non-OPEC crude oil production averaged 14.06 mb/d in September.
The monthly market data also saw OPEC cutting its forecast for global oil demand growth in 2024, reflecting data received so far this year and also lowered its projection for next year, marking the producer group’s third consecutive downward revision.
The weaker outlook highlights the dilemma faced by OPEC+, which comprises the OPEC countries and allies such as Russia, which is planning to start raising output in December after earlier delaying the hike against a backdrop of falling prices.
The monthly report said world oil demand will rise by 1.93 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2024, down from growth of 2.03 million bpd it expected last month. Until August, OPEC had kept the forecast unchanged since it was first made in July 2023, Reuters reported.
China accounted for the bulk of the 2024 downgrade. OPEC trimmed its Chinese growth forecast to 580,000 bpd from 650,000 bpd. While government stimulus measures will support fourth-quarter demand, oil use is facing headwinds from economic challenges and moves towards cleaner fuels, OPEC said.
Oil held an earlier decline of about 2 per cent after the report was issued, with Brent crude trading below $78 a barrel.
There is a wide split between forecasters on the strength of demand growth in 2024, partly due to differences over China and over the pace of the world’s switch to cleaner fuels. OPEC is still at the top of industry estimates and has a long way to go to match the International Energy Agency’s far lower view.
But OPEC said this year’s demand growth was still above the historical average of 1.4 million bpd seen prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a plunge in oil use.
For next year, OPEC cut its 2025 global demand growth estimate to 1.64 million bpd from 1.74 million bpd.
OPEC+ has implemented a series of output cuts since late 2022 to support the market, most of which are in place until the end of 2025.
The group was due to start unwinding the most recent layer of cuts of 2.2 million bpd from October, but decided to delay the plan for two months after oil prices slumped.
OPEC’s report showed production fell in September due to unrest in Libya and a cut by Iraq. OPEC+ pumped 40.1 million bpd, down 557,000 bpd from August. Iraq pumped 4.11 million bpd, down 155,000 bpd but still above its 4 million bpd quota.
As well as Iraq, OPEC has named Russia and Kazakhstan as among the OPEC+ countries which pumped above quotas.
Russia cut output in September by 28,000 bpd to about 9 million bpd, the report said, citing data from secondary sources such as consultancies. Kazakhstan, however, raised production by 75,000 bpd to 1.55 million bpd.
The OPEC report projects demand for OPEC+ crude, or crude from OPEC plus the allied countries working with it, at 43.7 million bpd in the fourth quarter, in theory allowing it room for higher production.

Prince William touches down with American football

PA Media Prince William holds an American football in his handPA MediaPrince William was told to "embrace your inner Shakira" to move his hipsIt was a park in Kennington in south London rather than a fluorescent Super Bowl pitch, but the Prince of Wales has joined the increasing numbers in the UK playing American football.
Prince William was credited with an "unbelievable" throwing arm, as he played the role of quarterback hurling the ball to a teammate.
There are now 60,000 boys and girls in 650 schools in the UK playing the non-contact version of American football.
This version of the sport, called NFL flag, is going to make its debut at the Olympics when the games are in Los Angeles in 2028.
PA Media Prince William playing US football in Kennington ParkPA MediaPrince William said he had tried US football before when he was youngerPrince William told Phoebe Schecter, who captains Britain's women's flag football team, that he had played American football when he was younger.
She suggested that he needed to move his hips more by "embracing your inner Shakira," referring to the Colombian singer.
Perhaps the prince could have borrowed some moves from his father's impressive display of Samoan dancing at a recent reception.
But Phoebe thought Prince William had potential for the grid-iron game, even though the prince is better known for his support for the type of football played by Aston Villa.
"Honestly, Prince William was great – his arm strength is unbelievable, when he let that first ball rip I couldn't believe it," said Schecter.
She also got technical with talk about offence, hand-offs and calling the cadence, which in American football is the series of words shouted by the quarterback, rather than anything more musical.
