2024 China Zoological and Plant Archeology Conference held in Zhengzhou

On October 21, 2023, the 2024 China Conference on Plant and Animal Archaeology, along with the 13th Conference on Animal Archaeology and the 11th Conference on Plant Archaeology, opened in Zhengzhou, Henan Province.

This event is organized by the Animal Archaeology Professional Committee and the Plant Archaeology Professional Committee of the Chinese Archaeological Society, in collaboration with the Henan Provincial Cultural Relics and Archaeology Society and the Henan Provincial Society for the History of Science and Technology. Over 360 representatives from more than 80 research institutions and universities across the country are attending. The conference aims to enhance collaboration and communication in the field of plant and animal archaeology in China, fostering innovation and development in theory, techniques, and methodologies.

Modern archaeology often focuses on three pivotal themes: the origins of humanity, agriculture, and civilization. Recent advancements in scientific technology have allowed plant and animal archaeology to thrive in China, leading to remarkable archaeological discoveries. For instance, research on bone flutes unearthed at the Jiahu site in Wuyang County, Henan, allows us to listen to enchanting melodies from thousands of years ago. Similarly, findings from the Xinyang Chengyangcheng site, involving leaves wrapped around food, provide us with insights into the early forms of zongzi, a traditional Chinese food, dating back over 2000 years. The study of more than 2000 animal bones from the Baishiya Cave site in Gan-su’s Xiahe County has revealed the survival patterns of Denisovans on the Tibetan Plateau for the first time. These discoveries vividly illustrate the lives, customs, and beliefs of ancient peoples.

“Archaeologists have long recognized that plant remains at sites can offer a unique perspective on ancient history,” said Jin Guiyun, the head of the Plant Archaeology Professional Committee of the Chinese Archaeological Society. With the abundant preservation of plant and animal remains at most archaeological sites, China’s work in this area is making significant contributions to the field, becoming a distinctive characteristic of Chinese archaeology.

Looking ahead, Luo Yunbing, the head of the Animal Archaeology Professional Committee, believes that researchers should embrace new technologies with an open mindset. He emphasizes the importance of broadening efforts in stable isotope analysis, ancient DNA research, and residue analysis, while also expanding into proteomics. Additionally, there is a necessity to accelerate the transformation of findings and engage in public outreach, communicating stories of Chinese animal archaeology in formats that resonate with the general public.

Wang Wei, the director of the Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, asserts the importance of interdisciplinary integration among archaeology, plant and animal archaeology, stable isotopes, and bioinformatics. He advocates for enhancing the depth and breadth of research, focusing on the construction of key specimen repositories. It is critical to keep pace with cutting-edge archaeological research and to normalize interdisciplinary exchanges and collaborations in order to boost the collective ability to address archaeological challenges through technological advances.

During the conference, three parallel sessions are scheduled, featuring 94 thematic presentations and 41 poster exhibitions, providing participants with extensive opportunities for exchange and display. Scholars will explore various topics from their unique research perspectives, including theories and foundational studies in plant and animal archaeology, applications of new technologies, new discoveries, the complexities of agriculture and society, stable isotope studies, and ancient DNA research.

USC Normal University Alumni Foundation Forum urges Chinese Americans to vote with wisdom_1

The Southern California Normal University Alumni Foundation recently hosted a virtual political forum featuring Eric Ching, a candidate for Congress in the 38th District. Among the attendees were school board commissioners and several members of the foundation. The forum was moderated by Wu Li-Yao-Hua, who urged Chinese-American voters to exercise their judgment before casting their sacred votes.

Wu, a former member of the Los Angeles Community College District Board, expressed deep concerns over the current domestic issues in the United States, highlighting rising inflation that has led many to struggle financially. He pointed out a surge in crime rates, particularly daylight robberies, an increase in homelessness, rampant drug use, and a surge in illegal immigration. He lamented that what was once considered the strongest nation in the world now finds itself in a situation worse than that of many third-world countries.

Eric Ching, a Republican and former mayor of Walnut, California, has a background as a business owner and has contributed significantly to community service. He reflected on his more than 12 years of experience in politics, revealing the darker side he has witnessed. Initially, he was an independent but decided to run for office after observing various political disturbances over the past few years. Ching mentioned the establishment of a homeless shelter in the San Gabriel Valley that costs the government millions of dollars to maintain the lives of just over 100 homeless individuals, emphasizing that this cannot fundamentally resolve the homelessness issue. He stressed that every dollar spent by the government comes from taxpayers, further burdening them.

Ching highlighted Proposition 36, which he believes is the most significant proposal on the ballot for California voters on November 5. He called for a revision of Proposition 47, which, despite being supported by the Democratic Party to enhance community safety, has had the opposite effect, worsening community security. He encouraged voters to support Proposition 36.

Forum participant Zhang Liangyu criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, stating that her responses to questions did not adequately address the real problems facing the nation. He asserted that many of the issues plaguing the U.S. during her four-year tenure stem from her policies and emphasized that she is unfit to serve as President. Zhang urged young voters not to be misled.

Napa Costco Wines Expert Guarantee_3

Recently opened Napa Costco might just feature the best wine selection in the entire United States, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The new store, which opened on October 18, has already garnered attention for its impressive wine section, thanks largely to one exceptional employee—Selman Medina. A well-known figure in the Bay Area Costco community, Medina has spent 11 years commuting from Napa to work in the wine department at Novato Costco, which has long been regarded as the best wine section among all Costcos in California.

Medina is one of only 30 “wine stewards” employed by Costco across the country and is also a co-founder of two prominent wine stewardship programs. When he learned that a Costco would be opening in his hometown after 35 years, he immediately requested a transfer. His extensive knowledge, charm, and friendliness make him a significant draw for members who might otherwise shop in Novato.

In many ways, Medina’s role resembles that of a sommelier. He engages with customers to recommend wines he believes they will enjoy, seamlessly connecting with Costco’s daily clientele—after all, he is a Costco customer himself. “What I love about wine is its connectivity,” he explains. “Wine is a benefit, a reward.”

For many of his customers, Medina has become a trusted wine expert—not just at Costco, but beyond. “He’s a local celebrity. He could have his own YouTube channel,” says David Wise, a long-time customer from Novato. “He always tells the truth, and he buys all his own wine.”

One notable recommendation from Medina is a wine called “Son of a Butcher,” crafted by French winemaker Yannick Rousseau in Napa. This Tannat-based blend is often overlooked on the shelves, but Medina’s enthusiasm for it struck a chord with customers, leading to a rapid sellout of an entire pallet within three days.

We asked Medina to recommend three fantastic wines available at the new Napa Costco, and here’s what he suggested:

1. **Louis M. Martini Monte Rosso Gnarly Vine Zinfandel, Sonoma Valley, $58.99 (typically retails for $100)**: Medina says, “This vineyard is exceptional for producing Zinfandel.”

2. **Baker & Hamilton Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, $65.99 (usually priced between $125 and $150)**: Coming from one of Napa’s most esteemed vineyards, Medina believes this is one of the best deals in the Napa Costco wine section.

3. **Viñedos del Contino, Contino Blanco, Rioja, $39.99 (rare to find elsewhere)**: While discussing this Viura and Grenache Blanc blend, Medina notes, “It’s a very unique blend, barrel-fermented with a long finish.”

With selections like these, it’s clear why many consider Napa Costco’s wine section to be a standout in the region.

Better realize the balance, promotion and unity of efficiency and fairness

**Interviewer**: Professor Chen Dongfang, thank you for joining us today. As a professor at the Marxism Institute of Henan Engineering University and a researcher at the Research Center for the Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, can you share your insights on the relationship between efficiency and fairness in the context of China’s modernization?

**Professor Chen**: Thank you for having me. The Third Plenary Session of the 20th Party Congress highlighted the importance of maintaining a systematic perspective in managing key relationships, such as those between the economy and society, government and market, efficiency and fairness, as well as development and security. President Xi Jinping has emphasized that “Chinese-style modernization must achieve higher efficiency than capitalism, while also ensuring greater social fairness.” Balancing efficiency and fairness is crucial for the ongoing deepening of reforms and advancing China’s modernization.

**Interviewer**: How do efficiency and fairness interact in the context of reform?

**Professor Chen**: Efficiency and fairness have always been critical issues throughout human history. The relationship between the two directly impacts social stability and development. It’s a complex challenge that we need to address as we deepen our reform efforts. The Party’s 18th National Congress called for both initial and redistributed allocations to consider efficiency and fairness, with greater emphasis on equity in redistribution. As we continue to promote high-quality development, our focus must be on achieving a balance that enhances both aspects, ultimately fostering a more equitable and inclusive society.

**Interviewer**: You mentioned high-quality development. How does it contribute to achieving this balance?

**Professor Chen**: High-quality development is essential for creating a solid material foundation for balancing efficiency and fairness. It embodies the goal of aligning quality with equity. By improving economic productivity and efficiency, while also addressing income disparities and ensuring fair distribution of wealth, we can create a more inclusive economy. This will not only stimulate the economy but also empower various social groups, especially the labor force, thereby expanding the middle-income population and enhancing overall societal purchasing power.

**Interviewer**: In terms of common prosperity, how can we strike the right balance between efficiency and fairness?

**Professor Chen**: President Xi has pointed out that common prosperity is a fundamental goal of Marxism and a long-standing ideal for the Chinese people. Our Party has consistently aimed to integrate efficiency and fairness in our development strategies. Since the 18th National Congress, we’ve focused on improving the living standards of citizens while ensuring that benefits are shared more equitably across society. Addressing issues like employment, healthcare, and education is key to this effort, alongside enhancing public services and increasing the income share for lower-income groups.

**Interviewer**: How can the government enhance the role of fairness while promoting efficiency?

**Professor Chen**: Promoting efficiency entails focusing on technological innovation and fair distribution policies that encourage a healthy economy while addressing local protectionism and monopolies. It is essential to integrate systemic innovations around common prosperity to ensure that initial distribution, redistribution, and third distribution mechanisms work cohesively. This balanced approach not only drives long-term economic development but also fosters social harmony.

**Interviewer**: In closing, what is the key takeaway regarding efficiency and fairness?

**Professor Chen**: Efficiency serves as the material foundation for fairness, while fairness is a vital assurance for efficiency. In the new era, it’s crucial to harmonize these two elements. We must ensure that all sources of social wealth creation are fully tapped, allowing the benefits of modernization to be enjoyed by all, which will clearly showcase the unique characteristics and advantages of Chinese-style modernization. Thank you for the opportunity to share these thoughts.

Bala Mohammed- PDP Will Resist Any Attempt to Turn Nigeria to One Party State

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has decided to postpone its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting from October 24 to November 28. This change aims to strengthen party unity as they prepare for the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Ondo on November 16, 2024.

Bala Mohammed, the Governor of Bauchi State and Chair of the PDP Governors’ Forum, emphasized at a recent stakeholders meeting in Abuja that the opposition would resist any effort to turn Nigeria into a one-party state. “We will ensure that all forces of division fail,” he stated, underscoring the party’s commitment to creating a united front.

During the stakeholders meeting, significant progress was reported by Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who leads the PDP reconciliation committee. He announced that the committee had successfully reconciled all members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), resolving longstanding divisions. Oyinlola remarked, “To the glory of God, we have been able to resolve differences that have been causing our party some headaches within the NWC.”

Mohammed expressed optimism about overcoming the current challenges facing the party. “We are here to discuss crucial internal issues, and we will share outcomes with the media and the public,” he explained. “The purpose of this meeting is to strategize for the party’s future and ensure we provide a solid platform for Nigerians in 2027,” he added.

He reiterated the importance of unity in light of attempts by detractors to divide the party. The meeting saw participation from key party organs, including the PDP Governors’ Forum, Board of Trustees, NWC, National Assembly PDP Caucus, and a forum of former governors.

Despite the successful reconciliation, there were prior attempts to facilitate the NEC meeting through legal means, as a High Court in Abuja had issued a restraining order against holding it. Reports suggest that PDP leaders sought to have the meeting convened through a court in Gusau to navigate what they perceived as bias in Abuja courts.

Meanwhile, support for the current leadership continues to grow, with the Bauchi State PDP Coalition Youth Stakeholders rallying behind acting National Chairman Umar Iliya Damagum. Sagir A. Sardauna, the group leader, reaffirmed their support, stating, “We are behind him and declare our total support for our great party’s Acting National Chairman.”

Egyptian President Tigasa plans 2-day truce, 4 hostages exchanged for some prisoners_1

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced today a proposal for a two-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, which includes a plan for the potential release of hostages that could pave the way for a “complete ceasefire.”

In a joint press conference in Cairo with visiting Algerian President, Sisi highlighted that the Egyptian government has been actively involved in efforts to mediate an end to the Gaza conflict. The proposal entails a temporary halt to hostilities, allowing for the “exchange of four hostages for some prisoners currently in Israeli jails,” with negotiations aimed at ensuring the safe delivery of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip within the next ten days.

The conflict intensified after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7 last year, triggering the ongoing war in Gaza. International mediators had previously secured a week-long ceasefire in November, but subsequent diplomatic efforts have failed to yield further agreements.

Among the 251 hostages taken by Palestinian militants on October 7, 97 remain imprisoned in Gaza, according to the Israeli military, with 34 confirmed deceased.

Earlier this month, Israeli forces killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, whom Israeli, U.S. officials, and some analysts view as a significant impediment to achieving a ceasefire.

Sisi emphasized that “our brothers in the Gaza Strip are facing an extremely dire siege,” pushing them “to the brink of famine,” and underscored the urgent need for humanitarian aid to alleviate the critical humanitarian crisis affecting the region.

According to AFP, Israeli officials report that Hamas attacks have resulted in 1,206 Israeli deaths, primarily among civilians. Meanwhile, the health ministry in Gaza, governed by Hamas, reported that Israeli military actions have led to at least 42,924 deaths, the majority being civilians, a figure the United Nations considers credible.
