Vale’s third quarter 2024 results release

On October 24th, Brazilian mining giant Vale S.A., based in Rio de Janeiro, announced its Q3 2024 earnings report. As of September 30, 2024, Vale’s total net debt reached $16.5 billion, an increase of $1.8 billion from the previous quarter, primarily driven by higher provisions related to the Samarco dam collapse.

The report revealed that Vale experienced improvements across all business segments, with iron ore shipments rising by 1.3 million tons, marking a 2% increase year-over-year. The average realized price for iron ore fines was $90.6 per ton, which represented a decline of $7.6 per ton compared to the previous quarter, while the reference price for iron ore dropped by $12.0 per ton during the same period.

Adjusted EBITDA for the quarter was reported at $3.7 billion, showing a 6% decrease sequentially and a 21% decrease year-over-year. The C1 cash cost for iron ore fines, excluding third-party purchases, fell to $20.6 per ton, down 17% from the previous quarter and 6% from the same period last year. Notably, C1 production costs fell to $18.2 per ton in September, indicating a potential for strong performance in Q4.

In terms of copper and nickel, total costs amounted to $2,851 per ton and $18,073 per ton, respectively. Vale has once again revised its total cost guidance for copper, lowering it to a range of $2,900 to $3,300 per ton, while maintaining the guidance for nickel at $15,000 to $16,500 per ton, which is expected to be achievable.

Additionally, Vale revised its provision related to Samarco to $4.7 billion, an increase of $1 billion. This adjustment reflects the latest assessment of potential agreements with the Brazilian government concerning the Samarco dam collapse, related claims, and Samarco’s capacity to fund any future cash outflows.

Gustavo Pimenta, CEO of Vale, stated that the company’s iron ore production reached its highest level in over five years this quarter, while pellet production hit a peak not seen since 2019. He noted solid progress in the base metals business, particularly in copper and nickel, driven by operational improvements in Canada. Looking ahead, Vale aims to maintain the safety of its dams and recently upgraded the Sul Superior dam from an emergency response level three status.

Pimenta also announced that Vale plans to sign a settlement agreement regarding the Samarco dam incident, which aims to provide a mutually beneficial resolution for all stakeholders involved, ensuring benefits for affected communities.

Registration for the 2025 College Entrance Examination has begun, and many places require strict qualification review

Recently, several regions in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Hunan, Anhui, Fujian, and Guangxi, have begun the registration process for the 2025 National College Entrance Examination, commonly known as the Gaokao. Notably, many areas have announced that supplementary registrations for the Gaokao will be abolished starting in 2025, and strict eligibility checks will be implemented to prevent “Gaokao migration.”

Traditionally, registration for the Gaokao occurs between October and November. However, this year, the timeline seems to be more concentrated in mid to late October and early November. For instance, in Shanghai, the online registration for the 2025 Gaokao will take place from October 14 to 17 (from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM each day), and on October 18 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. In Hunan, the collection of registration information and payment will occur from October 16 to 31, excluding weekends. Additionally, Jiangxi has scheduled its registration from November 1 at 9:00 AM to November 7 at 5:00 PM, while Henan will collect registration data for arts students from October 28 to November 1 and for non-arts students from November 4 to November 16.

Importantly, Hunan has stated that starting in 2025, there will be no supplementary registration for the Gaokao, and all candidates must complete their registration within the designated timeframe without any extensions. Similarly, Hebei has indicated that no supplementary registration will be allowed after the initial registration period closes.

Eight provinces will implement a new examination system, adopting a “3+1+2” model set to take effect in 2025. This model is part of a nationwide reform affecting 29 provinces. The new system will include standardized subjects as well as elective subjects for students. For example, the “3” refers to the mandatory subjects: Chinese, Mathematics, and English, which all students must take regardless of their specialization. The “1” represents a chosen subject from either Physics or History, and the “2” allows students to select two subjects from Politics, Geography, Chemistry, or Biology.

Moreover, local documents have emphasized the need for stringent eligibility checks with a focus on preventing “Gaokao migration.” For example, in Guangdong, authorities are implementing strict audits of students’ enrollment status to prevent unlawful relocation for the purpose of taking the Gaokao. Any discrepancies or fraudulent actions designed to secure registration will result in disqualification. Similarly, in Fujian, strict measures will be enforced to maintain proper registration practices and combat illegal activities that facilitate cross-regional Gaokao participation.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Education has reminded students to pay attention to their registration types, including regular, arts, and sports categories, and to thoroughly review related regulations to ensure accurate submissions.

Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development- All regions are making strong progress in the battle to ensure housing delivery, and 2.46 million units have been delivered

On October 17, the State Council Information Office held a press conference to discuss measures aimed at promoting the stable and healthy development of the real estate market. During the event, Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Ni Hong highlighted the significant progress in the battle to ensure the delivery of homes, noting that 2.46 million units have been successfully handed over.

A reporter asked, “With so much attention from all sectors of society regarding the delivery of homes, what steps are being taken to ensure that already sold properties under construction are delivered with quality? What actions has the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development implemented, and what specific measures can we expect moving forward?”

Ni Hong responded, stating that on May 17 of this year, the State Council initiated this critical initiative, and after five months, noticeable progress has been made. He explained that the campaign to guarantee home deliveries has instilled confidence among buyers and significantly shifted market expectations. The Ministry is working closely with relevant governmental departments to implement the decisions made by the Central Committee and the State Council, forming a collaborative approach to tackle this challenge. This includes the establishment of a special task force that cooperates with various entities such as financial regulators, development and reform commissions, banks, and local governments. The strategy involves two main focuses: first, creating a “white list” to address project funding issues, and second, monitoring construction delivery timelines while holding local governments, real estate companies, and financial institutions accountable. Each project will be approached with a customized strategy to ensure timely deliveries according to market and legal principles.

He emphasized that projects operating normally will be advanced under market-oriented and legal frameworks. For those facing insolvency, swift legal reorganization or liquidation processes will be pursued to safeguard the legitimate rights of home buyers. Ni Hong was firm in his stance against any illegal actions that harm public interests, insisting on strict penalties to prevent wrongdoers from evading responsibility.

Regarding the implementation of these efforts, Ni Hong explained that the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, in conjunction with the Financial Regulatory Bureau and other relevant bodies, is enhancing coordination across credit, land, and judicial measures, with a strong focus on delivery goals. Key aspects include: first, tracking progress through a national home delivery information system that monitors each deliverable project closely; second, ensuring quality by prioritizing the oversight of construction quality to guarantee that completed homes are up to standards; and third, facilitating coordination by utilizing a tripartite mechanism at the national, provincial, and municipal levels to address challenges like fund withdrawals across regions and legal disputes.

Ni Hong expressed his confidence that with support from credit funds tied to the “white list,” efficient cooperation among government departments, proactive actions from local authorities, and the dedicated efforts of real estate companies, the campaign to ensure home deliveries will succeed. He reassured that they aim to fulfill the responsibilities assigned by the Central Committee and the State Council, enabling home buyers to receive their properties as soon as possible.

Ian Holloway makes surprise return to management with Swindon Town

In a surprising turn of events, former Blackpool and QPR manager Ian Holloway has officially returned to football as the new manager of Swindon Town. With a rich history in the sport spanning 24 years and eight different clubs, Holloway had been out of work since resigning from Grimsby in December 2020. Many believed he had stepped away from management for good after leading Blackpool to the Premier League in 2010.

Now, he takes the helm at Swindon, following the dismissal of Mark Kennedy due to a disappointing start to the season. Currently, Swindon finds itself just one spot above the League Two relegation zone, having secured only two wins from 13 matches since Kennedy’s appointment in May.

“I’m thrilled to be back in football after taking some time away from the game. I was eager to return when the right opportunity arose, and I truly believe this is a perfect fit for me,” Holloway said. He has signed on until the end of the season and emphasized the swift nature of the discussions leading to his appointment. “Both sides were eager to get this deal done, and I couldn’t be happier to be involved with a club like Swindon Town, a team I know well given my connections to the area.”

Looking ahead, Holloway will be in attendance at the County Ground on Saturday for the match against Gillingham, although he will not manage the team this week. He expressed his intentions: “I want to unite everyone to achieve success and positivity both on and off the pitch, and I look forward to working together towards that goal.”

Swindon’s head of football, Jamie Russell, shared his confidence in Holloway’s leadership. “We believe Ian’s extensive experience across all levels of professional football will be a tremendous asset for Swindon Town. His passionate approach and local knowledge, combined with a commitment to creating a hardworking and entertaining team, made him an ideal choice for us. Moreover, we value his ability to help develop not just our first-team players but also our coaching staff.”

McDonald’s burger poisoning case suspected of being caused by onions, Food and Drug Administration recalls 4 types of raw onion products supplied by the farm

McDonald’s Quarter Pounder has been linked to an E. coli outbreak that has left at least 49 individuals severely affected. On October 23, Taylor Farms, the supplier of the burger’s raw onion ingredient, announced a recall of four types of raw onion products, according to Reuters.

The FDA identified the contaminated source as the raw onions used in the burgers and has pinpointed the supplier’s farm. McDonald’s confirmed on October 24 that the onions for their hamburgers come from Taylor Farms, which has initiated the recall.

Restaurants using these four types of raw onions have been instructed to stop using them and dispose of their inventory. As a precaution, McDonald’s has temporarily removed this menu item from its offerings.

An FDA spokesperson stated that they are investigating Taylor Farms, as well as all potential sources of contamination.

As of October 23, at least 49 people across the United States are suspected of eating the contaminated hamburgers and contracting E. coli. Notably, an elderly adult in Colorado has died, and 10 others, including a child who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, have been hospitalized.

In response to the recall, several chain restaurants such as Taco Bell and Illegal Pete’s in Colorado have halted the use of raw onions. Yum! Brands, the parent company of Taco Bell, also indicated that some Pizza Hut and KFC locations are no longer using raw onions, although these chains have not reported any food poisoning cases.

Taylor Farms, based in California, specializes in providing fresh-cut fruits and vegetables to foodservice operators.

The specific strain of E. coli identified in this outbreak, O157:H7, is particularly harmful and can damage the intestinal wall.

Shortly after the recall was announced, McDonald’s faced legal action. Ron Simon & Associates, a law firm specializing in food safety lawsuits, reported on October 24 that they filed a second lawsuit related to the hamburger contamination. The plaintiff, Clarissa DeBock, a Nebraska resident, claims she purchased a Quarter Pounder on September 18, fell ill days later, and required hospitalization, where she was confirmed to have been infected with the O157:H7 strain.

Another plaintiff, Eric Stelly from Colorado, reported suffering severe gastrointestinal symptoms after eating a McDonald’s hamburger, expressing his distress over the situation.

China-Vietnam cross-border -visit-to-home- travel has become a new trend

**Interview: The Rise of Cross-Border Tourism between China and Vietnam**

In recent days, the Sino-Vietnamese Vietnam-Detian (Ban Gioc) Waterfall Cross-Border Tourism Cooperation Zone has seen an influx of tourists. This area, which is the first cross-border tourism cooperation zone in China, allows both Chinese and Vietnamese visitors to enjoy a convenient “one-day, two-country” travel experience.

“The scenery here is stunning, and the landscape is picturesque. I came here with a few friends to immerse ourselves in the charm of the Sino-Vietnamese border,” said Chen Zhongxiu, a tourist from Guizhou, during an interview. He praised the ease of access to the cooperative zone, which offers an opportunity to explore foreign cultures and engage in various unique tourism projects—making this cross-border tourism model quite innovative.

The cooperation zone has been jointly developed by Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in China and Cao Bang Province in Vietnam. Located on the upstream of the Guichun River, the Detian Waterfall in Daxin County, Guangxi, seamlessly connects with the Ban Gioc Waterfall in Vietnam, forming the largest transnational waterfall in Asia.

Currently, the Detian Waterfall is experiencing peak water flow, with a powerful three-tiered drop that creates a spectacular sight. The cooperation zone enhances the waterfall viewing experience by offering multiple perspectives through attractions like the “Sky Ring,” “Bamboo Rafting on the Border River,” and the “Coffee Moments at the Rice Paddy Viewpoint.”

Additionally, the cross-border street in the cooperation zone features fun traditional Zhuang games, hands-on workshops in Zhuang brocade making, and a range of culinary delights from both countries, creating a feast for the senses.

The cross-border waterfall serves as a bridge connecting the cultures and friendships of China and Vietnam. With a series of favorable policies in place, an increasing number of tourists are embarking on this reciprocal journey.

“This region, with its picturesque ‘landscape gallery’, social media-worthy landmarks, Vietnamese and Chinese culinary experiences, and themed cultural events, has made cross-border tourism incredibly popular,” shared Vietnamese tour guide Nong Thi Bai.

Since its soft launch on September 15, 2023, the cooperation zone has implemented several measures to streamline border crossing procedures, such as “no fingerprinting, no immigration registration cards, no exit stamps,” and “online pre-approval systems,” facilitating over 30,000 border control transactions for travelers.

Recently, with the official opening of the zone, relevant agencies are set to further optimize the tourism experience by improving cross-border travel regulations, including visitor numbers, travel duration, and documentation processes.

“With the official launch of the cooperation zone, cross-border tourism between China and Vietnam is entering a new phase,” Nong Thi Bai commented. She is optimistic about the prospects for the cross-border tourism market and looks forward to more attractions becoming accessible to Vietnamese tourists.

Mo De Ren, who transitioned to the tourism industry two years ago in Cao Bang Province, now frequently guides Vietnamese tourists visiting China. He believes that the surge in Sino-Vietnamese cross-border tourism not only boosts the tourism industries of both nations but also fosters deeper cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries.

BART ordered to pay $7.8 million in damages after federal jury rules vaccination conflicts with employees’ beliefs

A federal jury issued a landmark ruling on October 25, requiring the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system to pay over $7.8 million to six former employees. The employees had requested religious exemptions regarding the COVID-19 vaccine, all of which BART denied, leading to their eventual termination.

The jury, consisting of eight members, reached a unanimous verdict after two days of deliberation, determining that BART violated the religious freedom rights of these employees. Each former employee is set to receive over $1 million in compensation. The Pacific Justice Institute (PJI) has represented these employees since 2022, and this victory holds significant weight not only for the individuals involved but also for potential similar cases across the nation.

The jury found that BART could not substantiate claims that granting the exemptions would cause “undue hardship.” They also validated the employees’ testimony, which demonstrated that the vaccine mandate conflicted with their beliefs. Furthermore, the jury agreed with the economic expert for the plaintiffs, awarding an additional $1 million for each employee’s losses.

During the trial, jurors heard testimonies from employees, revealing that some had served for over 30 years and maintained perfect attendance records, only to be fired for refusing the vaccine. BART contended that the refusals were based on reasons other than religious beliefs, but the jury rejected this argument.

PJI President Brad Dacus described the ruling as “an earthquake in the San Francisco legal community,” praising the efforts of both the legal team and the plaintiffs.

PJI Chief Counsel Kevin Snider remarked, “These employees chose to prioritize their faith over their jobs, which speaks volumes about their convictions.” He noted that after three years of struggle, the employees finally feel understood and supported.

Frank Lee, a leader in the Bay Area’s Chinese community, emphasized that this significant case serves as a wake-up call, stating, “Religious freedom and exemption rights must be respected.”

Currently, PJI continues to represent hundreds of employees nationwide who were terminated due to vaccine exemption denials, and this ruling could serve as a pivotal reference for similar cases.

As of the time of reporting, there has been no response from the BART organization.

Sydney restaurateur Alan Yazbek pleads guilty after displaying Nazi symbol at pro-Palestine rally

In a recent development, prominent Sydney restaurateur Alan Yazbek has pleaded guilty to displaying a Nazi symbol during a pro-Palestine rally. The co-owner of the Nomad Group appeared at Downing Centre local court on Thursday, where his lawyer confirmed his guilty plea.

The court proceedings highlighted that the 56-year-old’s case has drawn “significant media attention.” At the time of the rally, Yazbek co-owned the Nomad establishment with his wife, Rebecca Yazbek. His barrister, Phillip English, presented a substantial file to Magistrate Mark Whelan, who scheduled a sentencing hearing for December 10. The offense carries a potential maximum penalty of 12 months in jail and an $11,000 fine.

After the court session, Yazbek refrained from commenting on the case while it remains before the court, stating, “Respectfully, no comment.” He was arrested during the rally on October 6, where images of him holding a sign that mirrored the Israeli flag—replacing the Star of David with a swastika—emerged, accompanied by the words “Stop Nazi Israel.”

He was charged with displaying a Nazi symbol “without excuse” and was subsequently granted bail. Notably, New South Wales prohibited the public display of Nazi symbols in 2022.

Alongside his wife and business partner, Rebecca, Yazbek opened the Surry Hills Nomad restaurant in 2013, later expanding to three other venues in Melbourne and Sydney. In a statement on social media, Rebecca Yazbek announced that her husband is no longer part of the group’s management. She expressed deep regret over the consequences of his actions on the community and offered a heartfelt apology.

“As both his wife and business partner, I was furious with his actions and heartbroken by the harm they caused,” she wrote.

In response to the charges, Yazbek issued an “unreserved” apology, acknowledging the offense of his actions at the rally. “I apologize unequivocally for my actions at the demonstration on Sunday where I carried a sign that is deeply offensive to the Jewish community,” he stated. He emphasized his commitment to regaining the trust of his staff, loyal customers, and the larger community, reinforcing that both his Jewish and non-Jewish friends are aware he is not antisemitic.

Yazbek expressed his trauma over the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and reiterated his call for an end to the violence. “We must make it stop. Again, I apologize unreservedly.”
