As the World Series approaches, baseball still struggles with racial bias

Nearly 80 years after Jackie Robinson shattered the color barrier, recent analysis reveals that Black and Latino players continue to face significant hurdles in their pursuit of Major League Baseball. Jackie Robinson’s groundbreaking achievement in 1947 marked a pivotal moment for civil rights, but today, Black representation in MLB is at its lowest since the 1950s. While MLB initiatives have led to an increase in Black players being selected in early draft rounds since 2010, they have not advanced sufficiently through the minors to reverse the declining trend of Black players in the majors.

An exclusive analysis of minor league data highlights a key factor inhibiting Black players from reaching the majors: a long-standing bias against Black and Latino players dating back to 1950, which has limited their opportunities at certain positions and hindered their progress through the minors. Players of color, particularly those with darker skin, have often been funneled into outfield positions and experienced pronounced bias. Conversations with former players, scouts, front office analysts, and baseball historians reinforce these findings, with several recalling instances of overt bias occurring even within the last two decades.

Mitchell Nathanson, a law professor at Villanova and baseball historian, authored the 2024 book “Under Jackie’s Shadow,” which examines the racism faced by Black minor leaguers from 1950 to 1970. The book features testimonies from 13 Black players who overcame extraordinary challenges, only to see their careers cut short or impaired by bias.

“White audiences often prefer a narrative that ends on a high note. They’ll read about Willie Mays and Hank Aaron because those stories culminate in success at the Hall of Fame,” Nathanson noted. “This allows people to detach themselves from the painful parts of the story. They think, ‘Oh, it was awful, but look at their perseverance—it’s a great American tale!’ That’s misleading. While those players were exceptional, it doesn’t excuse the treatment they faced, nor does it consider the many players whose lives were devastated by systemic bias.”

Despite the growing emphasis on statistics in baseball, no public database currently exists that categorizes players by race or ethnicity, making the examination of racial biases challenging. By leveraging a meticulously compiled dataset of 11,000 major league players, I developed an AI model using facial recognition and names to estimate the perceived race of players. While the model cannot determine how individuals self-identify, it predicted racial classifications with about 94% accuracy—comparable to human judgment. This analysis encompassed around 40,000 players with headshots and names in major and minor league history from 1950 to 2019.

Typically, newly drafted players start at the low minor leagues and progress through six tiers of increasing skill development until they reach the majors. After adjusting for various performance metrics, age, and draft position, I found that teams were significantly less likely to promote Black and Latino players, even when their performance statistics were nearly identical to their white peers. Statistics also reveal that once Black and Latino players make it to the majors, they generally outperform their white counterparts, indicating that the bias against these players is unfounded.

One player who stood at the crossroads of this dynamic was Ron Allen, who reached the majors briefly in 1972, shortly after Robinson’s legacy began to reshape the league. Allen, a member of a baseball family—his brother Dick is often regarded as one of the greatest third basemen not in the Hall of Fame—recalls the realities of racial bias he faced during his career. “It didn’t matter if I hit .300 and a white player hit .270; he was going to get promoted ahead of me,” Allen said.

Allen’s experience underscores a troubling pattern: the impact of racial bias equated to an OPS (On-Base Plus Slugging) that was approximately 35 points lower than expected, reflecting disparities similar to those between Major League teams with disparate records. This trend persisted from 2000-2019, mirroring findings from 1950-2000, indicating that Black and Latino players continue to be promoted less frequently despite their performance.

Moreover, darker-skinned players were found to be more likely to be assigned to the outfield, whereas lighter-skinned Black and Latino players were often afforded opportunities at positions like catcher or shortstop, which are viewed as more critical roles. For instance, prior to 2000, only about 3% of Black players in the minors played as catchers, compared to nearly 10% of white players. Even when Black catchers were performing well, they were still 50% more likely to be shifted to different positions than their white counterparts.

As Black players have historically excelled in the outfield, the lack of representation in crucial positions like catcher, second base, and starting pitcher can hinder career opportunities and earnings for talented players. Wil Aaron, who began his career in 1971, experienced similar challenges. Although he excelled at second base, his team insisted he transition to the outfield. “Control positions like second base and catcher are crucial, akin to quarterbacking in football,” he explained.

The disparity in positions has also stunted the presence of Black and Latino catchers, who have drastically declined since 2000 to less than 2% in the minors, while the percentage of Black players in the outfield remains stagnant at 47%. Since 2000, the majors have seen only a handful of Black catchers with everyday roles.

While there has been a slight increase in Black pitchers since 2000, the number of pitchers has also grown due to strategic shifts in the game, leading to no change in the ratio of white to Black pitchers. Notably, Black and Latino pitchers are typically relegated to middle relief roles, which are less valued, resulting in fewer games started and saves despite having superior statistics like strikeout-to-walk ratios.

Although overt acts of racial discrimination have diminished since the Civil Rights era, the undercurrents of bias remain. Allen recalls the high frequency of hit-by-pitches targeting Black hitters during his career, reflecting the historical animosity from opposing teams. “Sometimes a catcher would warn you with a phrase like ‘hang loose’—that was a signal to brace yourself for getting plunked,” Allen recalled.

While racial bias around player positions and promotions persists, it reinforces the views of players like Hank Aaron, who poignantly said, “There’s a difference between what people think is behind us and what is actually ongoing.” As team management has diversified, with an increasing presence of Latin American and Asian players, the leadership remains predominantly white, which may perpetuate ingrained biases.

In recent years, as statistical analyses become more prevalent in evaluating player talent, expectations emerged that biases would diminish. However, Ben Baumer, a former Mets analyst and now a professor, argues that these algorithms can inadvertently reinforce biases, as they are often based on skewed historical data regarding player positions and progression.

“It’s important to recognize that while we aim to eliminate bias through machine learning algorithms, we may inadvertently amplify existing systemic inequalities,” Baumer explained.

Several front office professionals have acknowledged the persistence of coded language and stereotypes in evaluations based on race. Fernando Perez, a former major leaguer and current coach, points out that descriptors like “gamer” or “leader” are rarely attributed to non-white players. In a study of scout reports, stark disparities surfaced in how players of varying racial backgrounds were characterized, with negative remarks disproportionately directed at Black and Latino players.

Despite the acknowledgment of the issues, some teams actively strive for diversity and fairness in their assessments. The culture within different front offices can vary greatly, influencing attitudes toward bias and language, with some organizations benefiting from hiring overlooked talent.

The long-term effects of racial bias on players extend beyond their careers. Research indicates that exposure to racial discrimination can have lasting consequences on health and mental wellbeing. Allen, now 72, reflects on enduring nightmares stemming from his experiences in the game. “Can you believe this? Even now, I have dreams where I’m running in uniform to catch the train as it pulls away,” he shared.

“It’s difficult to move on when you’ve been wronged,” he concluded.

This analysis was supported by research from Brandon Smith, along with critical data from Mark Armour, Daniel Levitt, the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), and Baseball Prospectus.

Santa Clara County strives to ensure election security as November election approaches_1

As the November election approaches, the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters held a media day on the 16th to announce a series of measures aimed at ensuring election safety, promoting voter participation, and maintaining the fairness of the electoral process.

In an interview, Assistant Sheriff Ricardo Urena emphasized that it is the law enforcement agency’s primary responsibility to ensure that voters can exercise their rights in an environment free from threats and disturbances. He stated that officers will be on patrol around the clock to ensure public safety, especially during peak voting times. Urena made it clear that any attempts to disrupt the election will be met with severe penalties. He also encouraged community members to stay vigilant and promptly report any suspicious behavior to the authorities.

Matt Moreles, the Interim Registrar of Voters, shared that over one million voters have registered to participate in this election, marking the highest number of registered voters in the county’s history. He anticipates that voter turnout will be around 80% to 85%.

Moreles outlined the various voting methods available to voters. They can opt to vote by mail, visit polling centers in person, or use one of the multiple ballot drop boxes set up throughout Santa Clara County. Mail-in ballots were distributed to all active voters last week, allowing them to simply return their completed ballots via the prepaid return envelope. Additionally, the county has over 100 official ballot drop boxes that are open 24/7 for voters to submit their ballots at their convenience.

He also stressed the importance of cybersecurity. All election technology equipment has undergone national certification and rigorous testing to ensure it operates smoothly and accurately. The entire ballot counting system is isolated from external networks to safeguard data security. Furthermore, every step of the voting process is open to the public, allowing voters to witness ballot counting and signature verification firsthand, thereby enhancing the transparency of the election.

Moreles reminded voters of some key dates. October 21 is the final deadline for voter registration. Those who have not yet registered must do so by this date to receive a mail-in ballot. However, he noted that even if voters miss this deadline, they can still register conditionally and submit a provisional ballot. On Election Day, November 5, all polling centers will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., giving voters ample opportunity to vote at a time and location that suits them best.

2024 Customs Corporate Credit Supervision Policy Presentation Conference was held in Dongguan City

On October 21, 2023, the Customs Credit Supervision Policy Promotion Conference for Enterprises took place in Dongguan, organized by the General Administration of Customs and co-hosted by the Huangpu Customs and the Dongguan Municipal Government. This conference aimed to facilitate trade, enhance corporate competitiveness, and attracted over 300 companies in-person, with nearly 10,000 participating online.

The conference introduced the concept of AEO, or Authorized Economic Operator, which is a core system under the World Customs Organization’s “Framework of Standards to Secure and Facilitate Global Trade.” The AEO program seeks to promote the safety of global supply chains and streamline trade through collaboration among customs authorities, businesses, and other government departments. Companies certified by customs can benefit from preferential measures granted by customs authorities in different countries. Since signing its first mutual recognition agreement in 2012, Chinese customs have signed AEO mutual recognition agreements with 28 economies, covering 54 countries and regions.

As of September 2023, there are 6,043 AEO-certified enterprises in China, marking an 11.89% increase year-on-year. Specifically, the Huangpu Customs area has 280 AEO enterprises, which accounted for an impressive 53.77% of the total foreign trade value within that area during the first three quarters of the year, amounting to 622.746 billion yuan.

The General Administration of Customs has implemented 45 facilitation measures for AEO enterprises, including prioritizing processing, reducing inspection frequencies, and lowering customs clearance costs. These measures align with international standards, putting China’s AEO enterprise benefits among the most comprehensive globally.

One of the key players in this sector is Dongguan Lian Yi Da Supply Chain Management Co., located in the Dongguan Humen Port Comprehensive Bonded Zone. The company’s General Manager, Wen Jinbo, highlighted the importance of AEO certification: “Since we received AEO certification, our brand recognition and core competitiveness have significantly improved, leading to increased acknowledgment from foreign clients.”

The event not only focused on promoting the AEO system but also addressed the specific concerns of businesses. Experts from the customs system provided in-depth insights into topics of interest, including the AEO system, standards for AEO enterprises, tax-related declaration norms, proactive disclosure policies, and facilitation measures for AEO businesses.

Taiwanese ceramic artists search for porcelain in the -Porcelain Capital- to share the love between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait

On October 22, during an interview with China News Service, Taiwanese youth Yang Qingyi expressed her profound connection to the lyrics of the song “Blue and White Porcelain,” famously sung by Jay Chou. “When I stepped on the very ground where ‘Tianqing color awaits the misty rain’ originated, it felt like I could hear the echoes of history and witness the tireless efforts and artistic creations of countless artisans,” she shared.

This day marked the opening of the 2024 Cross-Strait (Jingdezhen) Ceramic Culture Exchange Activities and the Cross-Strait Ceramic Artists Exhibition in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province. Artists from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, along with young people from Taiwan, participated in events where they explored ceramics, showcased their works, engaged in cultural exchange workshops, and took part in hands-on ceramic activities.

Describing Jingdezhen’s rich historical significance, Yang highlighted that “Jingdezhen represents half of the history of ceramics.” The city is renowned for its porcelain and has become a thriving hub, where over 300 Taiwanese ceramic artists have launched their careers, embodying the term “Jing Drift.”

Ceramic artist Zhuo Bocheng, who hails from the New Taipei City district known as the “Jingdezhen of Taiwan,” echoed these sentiments by stating that the ceramic cultures of both sides share deep historical roots. “Taiwanese ceramic artists build on the foundation of traditional Chinese ceramic culture, infusing local features and innovative elements, which result in a unique and charming Taiwanese ceramic style,” he explained.

On the eve of the opening ceremony, Taiwanese artists and youth explored the cultural heritage of ceramics at locations like the China Porcelain Museum and the Taoxichuan Cultural and Creative Street, exchanging stories that intertwine the connections between both sides of the strait.

Yuzi, a pseudonym for another Taiwanese youth who has been studying ceramics for nearly two years, expressed her astonishment at the number of young people from around the world who come to Jingdezhen. “How do they transform creativity into reality? What direction should I take in my future?” she pondered, hoping to find answers during her journey.

According to Taiwanese artist Feng Ruile, this exchange embodies not just artistic collaboration but also a deep interaction and collision of the shared cultural heritage between Taiwan and the mainland.

Yang Qingyi concluded that through this event, the exchange of diverse creative concepts and techniques will lead to the birth of more ceramics that reflect contemporary characteristics and artistic value.

Long March Story|What is the -Crutch Monument- on the Long March Road-

During an interview, we discussed the harrowing experiences of the Red Army as they traversed the rugged terrain of the Songpan grasslands. Many soldiers tragically lost their lives due to the harsh weather conditions. The circumstances were such that there was no way to properly bury the fallen warriors. According to memoirs from the brigade commander, battalion leaders, and reconnaissance officers of the 1st Red Army, each soldier carried a branch to help navigate through the difficult terrain. When a soldier fell, the very branch they used would be inserted into the ground at the site of their sacrifice. This winding trail of branches came to be known as the “Cane Monument,” with each stick marking the resting place of a fallen comrade. These poignant symbols have become forever etched in the history of the Long March, representing the struggles and sacrifices of those who fought for the Chinese Revolution.

The Blessed Madonna- Godspeed review – a sprawling dancefloor odyssey

Marea Stamper, better known as the Blessed Madonna, is making waves with her long-awaited debut album, “Godspeed.” Over the past decade, she has earned a reputation as a Chicago DJ who electrifies dancefloors with her eclectic mixes of house, techno, and disco. Her talent isn’t just limited to spinning records; she’s also crafted remixes for pop giants like Dua Lipa and Robyn.

In “Godspeed,” Stamper offers an expansive musical journey that blends radio-friendly tracks with deeper, bass-heavy sounds. Among the more commercial tracks are the catchy “Edge of Saturday Night,” featuring Kylie Minogue, the breakbeat-infused “Brand New” with James Vincent McMorrow, and “Mercy Pt 2,” a disco gem featuring Jacob Lusk. While these tracks are undeniably enjoyable, some may find them lacking in originality.

However, where “Godspeed” truly stands out is when Stamper explores the darker side of the dancefloor. Tracks like “Somebody’s Daughter” deliver a pounding techno bass, while “Blessed Already” showcases gritty, jacking house beats. The fragmented vocals in “Strength (R U Ready)” further exemplify her innovative approach.

At 24 tracks, the album has an ambitious scale but also risks overwhelming listeners with its sheer volume. While “Godspeed” is a fun and engaging listen, some may feel that its extensive tracklist hinders its overall memorability. It’s a record that certainly showcases the Blessed Madonna’s talents but leaves room for refinement in the future.

Be sure to check out “Edge of Saturday Night (Extended)” featuring Kylie Minogue for a taste of what Stamper has to offer.

United Nations- Gaza’s economy has completely collapsed and it will take 350 years to return to pre-war levels_1

The economy of Gaza may take up to 350 years to return to pre-war levels, according to a report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The British newspaper The Guardian reported that the prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to a “complete collapse” of Gaza’s economy.

In a report submitted to the UN General Assembly concerning the economic costs of the war, it was revealed that since the conflict erupted on October 7 of last year, Gaza’s remaining economy and infrastructure have been almost entirely destroyed. The economy, already fragile before the war, is now stagnant, struggling to provide even the most basic humanitarian medical and food services amidst severe shortages of water, electricity, and fuel.

The construction sector has seen a staggering 96% drop in output, while agricultural output has decreased by 93%, manufacturing by 92%, and services by 76%. The unemployment rate has skyrocketed to 81.7% in the first quarter of 2024, potentially worsening further due to ongoing military actions.

The report highlights that “to resume the growth trend observed from 2007 to 2022, Gaza would need 350 years to raise its GDP to the levels seen in 2022” after achieving a ceasefire.

In the meantime, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated on the 22nd his call for Israeli leaders to commit to a ceasefire in Gaza, as the northern region continues to suffer from violence while residents urgently need assistance. This statement comes amid ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

Since Hamas launched its assault on Israel over a year ago, sparking the Gaza war, this marks Blinken’s 11th trip to the Middle East. This visit also follows heightened tensions from a conflict involving Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah last month.

During a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Tel Aviv, Blinken stated that the recent killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar by Israeli forces has created an “opportunity” for a Gaza ceasefire and for the release of Israeli hostages.

“I firmly believe that Sinwar’s death indeed presents a significant opportunity for the return of Israeli hostages, the end of the war, and the assurance of Israel’s security,” Blinken declared.

Furthermore, Washington has warned that if Israel does not swiftly improve the access of humanitarian aid into Gaza, the U.S. may consider suspending certain military assistance to Israel.
