Xi Jinping meets with Egyptian President Sisi

On the evening of October 23, local time, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi during the BRICS leaders’ meeting in Kazan, Russia.

During their meeting, President Xi congratulated Egypt on its first official participation as a member of the BRICS group. He emphasized that this year marks the “China-Egypt Partner Year” and the 10th anniversary of the two countries establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership. President Xi reiterated China’s steadfast support for Egypt in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and developmental interests. He expressed a desire for both nations to remain sincere friends who support each other and to work closely together as intimate partners. The two leaders agreed to continue reinforcing mutual support, strengthening political trust, deepening pragmatic cooperation, and further enhancing cultural exchanges. President Xi highlighted the importance of jointly promoting the “Belt and Road Initiative” and advancing bilateral relations toward the goal of building a shared future for China and Egypt in the new era. He also expressed China’s willingness to coordinate closely with Egypt to ensure the stability and longevity of “BRICS Plus Cooperation,” aiming to enhance the influence and voice of the Global South and protect the common interests of developing countries.

President el-Sisi congratulated China once again on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Reflecting on the past ten years of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Egypt and China, he noted the fruitful cooperation achieved across various fields. He regarded China as Egypt’s and Africa’s most sincere friend, expressing gratitude for the valuable assistance provided by China. President el-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s firm commitment to the One China principle, fully understanding the critical importance of the Taiwan issue to China. He expressed his country’s willingness to align its development strategies with the Belt and Road Initiative, further enhancing practical cooperation across all sectors. President el-Sisi thanked China for its support in Egypt’s official accession to the BRICS cooperation mechanism and expressed a desire to work closely with China in multilateral efforts to maintain the common interests of developing countries and promote a more just and equitable global governance system.

The discussions also touched upon the current situation in the Middle East. President Xi voiced his concerns over the unrest in the region, stating that ongoing conflicts do not serve the interests of any party involved. He underscored that the Palestinian issue remains central to Middle Eastern concerns. The immediate priority, he stressed, is to comprehensively and effectively implement relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and achieve a swift ceasefire in Gaza. Only by realizing the “two-state solution” can a comprehensive, just, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue be attained. President Xi commended Egypt’s efforts in promoting a ceasefire and expressed a willingness to strengthen coordination and collaboration with Egypt to hasten the alleviation of the Israel-Palestine conflict and contribute to regional stability.

The meeting included participation from other officials, including Cai Qi and Wang Yi.

Supermodel turned into a sex slave, accuses New York famous doctor boyfriend of beating and drugging her, demanding tens of millions of dollars in compensation

In a recent lawsuit, 25-year-old model Maya Willow Sias has leveled serious allegations against her former boyfriend, Dr. Ammar Mahmoud, a well-known plastic surgeon based in New York. Sias claims that during their nine-month relationship, Mahmoud subjected her to physical violence, sexual abuse, and coercion, essentially treating her like a “sex slave.” She is seeking $10 million in damages.

According to a report from the New York Post, Sias, who has graced the covers of popular men’s magazines such as Maxim in the U.S., the U.K., and Russia, alleges that Mahmoud began abusing her shortly after they met at a yacht party in Miami in April 2023.

Sias describes a rapidly escalating pattern of abuse. Despite her initial rejection of his requests for threesomes, Mahmoud reportedly used drugs, including anesthetics and hallucinogens, to incapacitate her and force her into sexual acts. There were even claims that he would bring in prostitutes to participate. In one disturbing incident following an argument, Mahmoud allegedly beat Sias so severely that he fractured her eye socket. He then took her to his clinic, where he performed a cosmetic procedure on her without anesthesia to cover up the injuries.

In an exclusive interview with the New York Post, Sias recounted a particularly harrowing experience: “He injected my face, and I felt the needle scraping against my bones.” She described this period as akin to torture. The lawsuit asserts that Mahmoud exploited his medical credentials to manipulate Sias into taking antidepressants and ketamine, maintaining her in a subservient state.

The lawsuit includes photographic evidence, with Sias providing multiple images showing bruises and scars from the alleged beatings. She expressed the profound psychological and physical toll the ordeal took on her and stated that she was only able to escape Mahmoud’s grip when she left for work in California. However, she admits to still suffering from the trauma.

Additionally, Mahmoud has faced similar allegations from his ex-wife, who filed a lawsuit in 2014 claiming she was also a victim of his abuse and sexual violence during their marriage. Mahmoud has denied all allegations, claiming they are out of character for him. The case is currently under judicial consideration.

UBS report- Bubble risk is serious, Los Angeles housing prices may plummet_1

In a recent interview, UBS Group, an investment banking giant, revealed concerning findings in its latest research report about the Los Angeles real estate market. The report posits that the market is facing significant bubble risks, with potential for substantial price declines. We spoke with real estate expert Li Bingxin, who has nearly 30 years of experience in the field, about these insights.

“The current situation in Los Angeles is characterized by high prices and high interest rates. Only 12% of people can afford to buy a home. If this isn’t a bubble, what is? The standard used to be that 38% to 40% of people could afford a home, which would be considered normal pricing,” Li explained.

Li noted that real estate prices typically follow a cycle of about 12 years, with the last downturn occurring in 2010 when prices hit rock bottom. According to this cycle, 2022 was projected to be a low point; however, the onset of the pandemic delayed this cycle. An important indicator Li mentioned is that real estate downturns often begin with the Federal Reserve (Fed) lowering interest rates. “The recent rate cut by the Fed—could it be signaling the advent of a new economic storm?” he pondered.

Furthermore, Li raised concerns about recent layoffs in high-tech companies. “Employees with expensive homes may find themselves unable to meet mortgage payments due to job losses. If there’s a backlog of homes on the market that can’t be sold, prices are bound to drop,” he stated. He emphasized that while many view real estate as directly tied to interest rates, the more significant factor is the overall health of the economy. “If the economy falters, even low interest rates won’t prevent property values from declining,” he concluded.

On the other hand, Irvine-based real estate agent Paul Young held a contrasting viewpoint. He acknowledged that fluctuations in home prices—specifically minor dips following significant increases—are normal, but he expressed skepticism about predictions of a drastic crash. “Currently, there are no major factors that would lead homeowners to panic sell and flood the market,” he said. Young also pointed to the high costs associated with moving, labor, and materials as stabilizing forces for home prices in the near term.

In summary, while UBS’s report indicates that the Los Angeles real estate market is overvalued and suggests bubble risks, it also clarifies that the presence of risk does not necessarily mean a bubble will burst. The future of LA’s housing market remains uncertain, shaped by various economic factors and differing perspectives within the industry.

Guangdong real estate financing -white list- projects have landed more than 83.7 billion yuan

During a recent press briefing on October 22, 2023, the Guangdong banking sector shared insights into its strategies for enhancing real estate financing. According to officials from the Guangdong Financial Supervisory Bureau, banks in the region have made significant strides in implementing the new real estate financing coordination mechanism. To date, financial institutions have provided credit amounting to 135.018 billion yuan for 404 projects listed on the “white list,” with 331 projects having secured funding, totaling 83.709 billion yuan—ranking first nationally in terms of actual funding amounts. Notably, about 70% of these projects are from private developers, accounting for over 80% of the total credits extended.

Liu Yunhai, a member of the party committee and a second-level inspector at the Guangdong Financial Supervisory Bureau, emphasized the importance of collaboration with various local government departments, including the Guangdong Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. He pointed out that city governments play a crucial role in coordinating efforts, focusing on both urban development and project specifics. The goal is to streamline the review, credit approval, and disbursement processes for projects on the “white list,” thereby facilitating timely project completion and protecting the legitimate rights of homebuyers. Moving forward, the bureau plans to include all commercial housing projects within the “white list,” ensuring comprehensive access to financing.

Moreover, Liu highlighted Guangdong’s commitment to macroeconomic regulation and support for the real estate sector through various policies, including the “16 Financial Policies” and differentiated housing credit measures. This approach aims to meet the financing needs of diverse property developers consistently, promoting year-on-year growth in real estate credit. As of late September, the balance of real estate loans in the region stood at 5.46 trillion yuan, reflecting a 1.43% increase compared to the previous year. In the first three quarters of this year, new loans for real estate development totaled 37.589 billion yuan, a substantial increase of 35.556 billion yuan from the same period last year. Personal housing loans also showed positive growth, reaching 4.11 trillion yuan, while real estate acquisition loans amounted to 43.537 billion yuan, up by 5.02%.

In addition to these efforts, Guangdong has swiftly implemented new policies aimed at stabilizing the real estate market. To support the People’s Bank of China in its initiative to lower existing mortgage rates, major banks in Guangdong are expected to complete uniform adjustments by the end of October. These adjustments are anticipated to save homebuyers approximately 15 to 20 billion yuan annually in interest payments. The Guangdong Financial Supervisory Bureau is guiding local banks in applying the latest policies on down payment ratios for personal housing loans, actively supporting both essential housing needs and improvements.

Brooklyn Mid-Autumn Festival Float Parade Appreciation Banquet Over 100 People Attended

The first-ever Mid-Autumn Festival Parade and Awards Ceremony in Brooklyn took place recently, attracting numerous elected officials and members of the Asian community. The event, organized by the Brooklyn Business Association (BBA), also marked the announcement of the next phase of the 8th Avenue Clean-Up initiative, aimed at encouraging community residents to get involved.

Over a hundred community members were invited to the dinner, including State Assemblymembers Maritza Davila and Yuh-Line Niou, City Councilmember Linda Lee, and a representative from Congressmember Max Rose’s office, Ling Xia Ye. Councilmember Lee expressed how the BBA has achieved remarkable changes in a short time and looks forward to further contributions to the community. Assemblymember Niou acknowledged the positive changes in the community, thanking the BBA for its efforts in uniting the Asian community.

On September 8, the BBA hosted its inaugural Mid-Autumn Asian Cultural Festival Parade, and this dinner served to thank community members who contributed to the parade while presenting awards to outstanding individuals from various fields, including education, healthcare, and business.

In his speech, BBA President Chih-Wang Huang emphasized that despite the organization’s recent establishment, the strong support from the community has been invaluable. He stated, “Community is not about one person; it takes the collective power of many to improve our neighborhood.” BBA’s Ling Fei added that the organization was founded with the mission to enhance the community, rallying under the slogan “This community is our home; beautification relies on everyone.”

The BBA also shared plans for upcoming clean-up activities along 8th Avenue, set to begin on October 28. Every weekend, two hired employees will clean from noon to 3 PM, while volunteers will assist on weekends. President Huang expressed hopes that community involvement will help change outsiders’ perceptions of the neighborhood as dirty.

To tackle the issue of illicit advertisements, the BBA will expand its efforts to cover areas up to 67th Street. Additionally, in partnership with the nonprofit organization ACE (Alliance for Community Employment), they will employ pressure washers to clean dirty streets and remove graffiti from walls and gates.

Moreover, to address the issue of cigarette butts, the BBA plans to collaborate with the City Health Department and local businesses to conduct educational workshops promoting the installation of designated ashtrays on 7th and 9th Avenues. They also plan to implement painting lines to define vendor areas per NYC regulations, improving the streetscape. Future collaborative efforts with the City Department of Transportation, Small Business Services (SBS), and the Health Department aim to beautify the streets along 7th and 9th Avenues by planting flowers under street trees and enlisting professional maintenance.

Call Me by Your Name and Challengers film-maker to bring new interpretation to hit novel to the screen
Benjamin LeeFri 18 Oct 2024 14.43 EDTLast modified on Fri 18 Oct 2024 15.22 EDTShareLuca Guadagnino, the Italian film-maker, will bring a new interpretation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel American Psycho to the screen.
According to Deadline, the acclaimed director of Call Me by Your Name and Challengers will work with screenwriter Scott Z Burns to find an updated way into the material. Burns is known for his many collaborations with Steven Soderbergh including Contagion, Side Effects and The Informant.
“Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP,” said Lionsgate chair Adam Fogelson in a statement.
The 1991 book was an object of notoriety upon release, telling the violent story of an image-obsessed investment banker who is also a serial killer. It was adapted into a 2000 film starring Christian Bale and later a stage musical starring Matt Smith.
In 2021, it was also suggested that Lionsgate had been planning a TV series based on the novel.
Guadagnino received an Oscar nomination as producer for his 2017 gay romance Call Me by Your Name and is currently on the film festival circuit for his adaptation of William S Burroughs’ Queer starring Daniel Craig. Love-triangle drama Challengers became his biggest box office hit to date earlier this year, making $93.9m worldwide.
The prolific director recently finished production on college-set thriller After the Hunt starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield, and is attached to direct an adaptation of Pier Vittorio Tondelli’s 1989 novel Separate Rooms with Josh O’Connor and Léa Seydoux.
Last year, Guadagnino had also been linked to a miniseries adaptation of Ellis’s recent novel The Shards for HBO but reportedly exited the project.

How is the current progress of autumn and winter planting- Response from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs

On October 25, the State Council Information Office held a press conference regarding the agricultural and rural economic operations in the first three quarters of 2024. During the event, a reporter inquired about the progress of the autumn harvest and the ongoing autumn and winter planting, particularly in relation to the current developing trends.

In response, Pan Wenbo, Chief Agronomist of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and Director of the Crop Management Division, explained that while the autumn harvest is still underway, preparations for autumn planting are already in motion. He emphasized that the autumn and winter planting marks the start of agricultural production for the following year. Notably, the area designated for winter wheat accounts for roughly one-fifth of the total grain area for the year, while winter rapeseed comprises over half of the annual oilseed area. Thus, effectively managing the planting of winter wheat and winter rapeseed is crucial for ensuring a bountiful grain and oil harvest in the summer of the next year.

Pan noted that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs is proactively advancing autumn and winter planting initiatives while simultaneously managing the autumn harvest. Prior to the autumn equinox, comprehensive plans were laid out, and relevant government departments timely issued policy signals regarding a one-cent increase in the minimum purchase price for wheat. Technical guidance for winter wheat and winter rapeseed planting was also disseminated, along with training on the “Double-late” technique, which involves late harvesting of preceding corn crops and late planting of subsequent wheat. Preventive measures against pests and diseases, such as seed treatment and pesticide application, were implemented right from the planting stage to enhance productivity on a large scale.

Pan reported that, based on field investigations and feedback from various regions, the overall progress of autumn and winter planting has been smooth. Early crops have been transitioned efficiently, most areas have favorable soil moisture conditions, and planting is slightly ahead of the same period last year. According to data up to October 24, 21 million acres of winter wheat have been sown, which is 61.5% of the planned area, exceeding last year’s progress by 5.9 percentage points, despite a slight delay compared to long-term averages as a result of the late planting strategy. For winter rapeseed, over 7.4 million acres have been planted, completing 66.7% of the intended area, which is 3.1 percentage points ahead of last year.

Additionally, Pan mentioned that the Ministry has sent six teams to 14 key provinces to assist local authorities in advancing autumn and winter planting efforts. The focus will be on three main areas: ensuring the sowing area is maximized with timely planting, implementing pre-winter management strategies such as wheat compaction and winter irrigation to promote strong seedling growth, and reinforcing disaster prevention measures to secure a successful harvest next summer by addressing cold weather and pest threats.

BHP ‘doggedly trying to avoid’ responsibility for Brazil dam disaster, English high court hears

In an unprecedented legal move, the largest group lawsuit in English history has commenced, centered on a catastrophic dam collapse linked to the Anglo-Australian mining giant BHP, which tragically claimed the lives of 19 people. The lawsuit seeks up to £36 billion in compensation and involves over 620,000 claimants represented at London’s High Court.

The case stems from the 2015 breach of the Fundão dam, which held toxic waste from an iron ore mine near Mariana, Brazil. Alain Choo Choy KC, representing the claimants, criticized BHP for “cynically and doggedly trying to avoid” responsibility for what has been described as Brazil’s worst environmental disaster. He noted that the inadequacies of Brazil’s reparations process prompted the petitioners to seek justice in England.

Choo Choy highlighted a stark divide between what BHP views as an acceptable compensation offer and what the victims are rightfully owed. “This is not BHP facing up to its responsibilities but rather attempting to sidestep them,” he argued in court documents. He emphasized that there is no wrongdoing in the claimants seeking accountability from BHP in London, especially considering the ineffective avenues for redress available in Brazil.

On November 5, 2015, the dam’s failure unleashed approximately 50 million cubic meters of toxic waste, devastating the small community of Bento Rodrigues just minutes after the breach. The disaster led to significant destruction, including the loss of life, infrastructure, homes, and valuable cultural heritage.

Following the disaster, BHP, alongside its joint venture partner Vale and the Brazilian company Samarco, established the Renova Foundation to address claims for compensation and mitigate environmental harm. Despite this, various parties have pursued independent claims in Brazilian courts, with the largest class action currently on hold amid ongoing settlement discussions.

BHP and Vale had recently proposed raising their compensation offer in Brazil by around $5 billion, bringing it close to $30 billion. However, this offer was dismissed by Pogust Goodhead, the law firm leading the claims in London, as a “desperate attempt” to evade responsibility.

The claimants allege that BHP had been aware of the risks associated with the dam’s operation, pointing to a risk assessment from 2009 that predicted potential fatalities and a 2012 presentation indicating that a dam breach could impact the nearby community in under 10 minutes. They contend that BHP should have implemented a relocation plan for Bento Rodrigues as part of its safety measures.

In its defense, BHP contends that it cannot be held liable as a shareholder and asserts that its directors were not informed of any safety threats regarding the dam. The company claims that continual assurances were given that the dam was being operated safely by both internal and independent experts.

The claimants are represented by a legal framework funded by Gramercy, a U.S.-based alternative asset manager. Among the plaintiffs are not only individuals but also approximately 2,000 businesses, 46 municipalities, and 65 faith-based organizations.

Outside the courtroom, Gelvana Aparecida Rodrigues da Silva, who tragically lost her seven-year-old son Thiago in the disaster, expressed her relentless pursuit of justice, stating, “It’s been really difficult these last nine years, but I have to be strong. My hope is to find justice here. In Brazil, it is hopeless.”

The trial is anticipated to last around 12 weeks, with additional hearings required to determine compensation amounts if BHP is found liable.

Post Office scandal musical ‘shows the heartache’

Andrew Billington’s “Make Good” is a compelling new musical that takes a deep dive into the personal stories of those affected by the notorious Post Office scandal. After the impactful ITV drama “Mr. Bates vs the Post Office,” this theatre production aims to further explore the hearts behind the headlines through its musical format.

Jeanie O’Hare, co-writer of “Make Good,” expressed to BBC News her belief that the musical approach is the most effective way to convey the profound emotional pain and isolation experienced by the victims. “The fact that these individuals are being told they are liars and thieves, despite being pillars of their communities, creates a significant tension in their narrative,” she explained. “They’ve devoted their lives to their communities, yet we chose to trust flawed technology over the real, living humans who upheld these neighborhoods for so long.”

O’Hare’s journey in crafting “Make Good” began long before the ITV drama aired in January. She connected with real sub-postmasters, uncovering the sheer scale of one of the UK’s largest miscarriages of justice. “We decided to believe tech rather than the incredible individuals who have held our communities together,” she reflected.

The script for “Make Good” is brought to life with music composed by Jim Fortune, an Olivier Award nominee. He described how the songs delve into the characters’ souls, capturing the emotional arcs they traverse throughout the story.

This production, touring across England, celebrates the 50th anniversaries of both Pentabus and New Perspectives theatre companies. It kicked off last Saturday in Ludlow, Shropshire, and features local community choirs partnering with the cast to perform. Fortune noted that while each choir will offer a unique tone and dynamic, the performances are bound to be remarkable.

Before the tour began, several real-life sub-postmasters attended a rehearsal. “Their presence has been incredible; they watched us perform and were so generous with their feedback,” Fortune shared. “It must have been a surreal experience for them, but they provided extraordinary insight.”

O’Hare added, “We created a space where they could take a breather if needed, but they chose to stay and engage with us throughout. Their feedback made it clear that unlike the ITV drama, our production genuinely encapsulates their heartbreak and the grief associated with their experiences.”

Between 1999 and 2015, faulty Horizon accounting software led to the wrongful prosecution of hundreds of sub-postmasters, many of whom faced imprisonment for crimes they didn’t commit. O’Hare gathered insights from various individuals involved in the Post Office Inquiry during her research, using their stories as inspiration for her characters.

One sub-postmaster, Chris Trousdale, who was only 19 when he was wrongfully convicted, expressed his hope that the production would do justice to their experiences. “We’re not precious about the story; we just want it portrayed accurately to ensure it doesn’t happen to anyone else,” he said.

Watching actors reenact parts of his past during rehearsals was a “cathartic” experience for Trousdale. “I was initially curious about how a musical could convey our story, and I was absolutely amazed by what I saw. The emotional strain conveyed through music truly captures the inner agony we endured, something the TV drama couldn’t achieve.”

With a previous play titled “Glitch” and the ITV drama capturing significant public attention, O’Hare reflected on the necessity of this musical. She acknowledged the impact that the TV adaptation had on public awareness and legislative discussions, yet emphasized the unique healing aspect of “Make Good.” “In a village hall, surrounded by a community choir, we’re not just revealing stories; we’re reconnecting with our shared humanity,” she highlighted.

“Make Good” is set to continue its tour until December 1, delivering a poignant reminder of resilience and community amidst tragedy.
