On October 25, China’s Minister of Commerce, Wang Wentao, met with Apple CEO Tim Cook to discuss the development of Apple’s business in China and the broader U.S.-China economic relationship.
Wang emphasized that the recent Third Plenary Session of the 20th Communist Party of China has outlined a comprehensive plan for improving the high-level open economy. He noted that China has introduced new opening-up policies and is proactively addressing issues relevant to foreign enterprises. “We welcome Apple to seize the opportunity, deepen its commitment to the Chinese market, and maintain stable collaboration with local partners for mutual development. China is dedicated to further optimizing the business environment and continually providing high-quality services to foreign companies,” Wang stated.
Wang also highlighted that mutually beneficial U.S.-China economic cooperation aligns with the fundamental interests of both nations and acts as a stabilizing force in their bilateral relations. He expressed concerns about the overgeneralization of national security, suggesting it could hinder normal economic exchanges. “China is willing to facilitate regular government-business communication to help U.S.-China economic relations return to a healthy and stable trajectory,” he added.
In response, Cook noted that China’s rapid development has significantly contributed to Apple’s quick and sustainable growth. He reiterated Apple’s commitment to China as a vital market and key supply chain partner, emphasizing the company’s intention to invest in supply chains and research and development in the region. Cook also expressed Apple’s desire to serve as a bridge in promoting communication and collaboration in the U.S.-China economic sector.
